@ThruHammer

Thanks, your suggested solution worked just fine.

Good, though I feel your circumstance was somehow different.

According to Mike:

I've made some modifications. I've removed all the 'updater' scripts from immediately inside the portable directory, on the same level as the 'LAUNCH' script. Pepperflash is pointless, because it will be EOL in a matter of weeks.....and the Widevine and ffmpeg scripts are no longer behaving themselves, apparently downloading older versions than were available with the previous release!

Pepperflash is still there, but I've put the latest version in for you. Likewise with Widevine and ffmpeg.

The symlinking bit I suggested should not have been required.

Still, it works for you. In the end that's all that matters.

I have 32-bit installed in Bionicpup32. I downloaded and clicked on LAUNCH, vivaldi-pup, vivaldi-bin, vivaldi-sandbox, all failed. On terminal I get a message, command not found.
help will be appreciated.

32- and 64-bit packages available from the usual link in post #1. D/l; unzip; put where you like.....outside the 'save', of course. Click to open, click 'LAUNCH' to launch. 'LAUNCH_NL' is required for very new Pups, like Fossapup64, etc.

Enjoy!

Mike. ;)

You should be clicking the "LAUNCH" script one directory up.

In other words, show us what LAUNCH returns when run from a terminal.

Hello @gychang ... dont know if this is the problem, but, at a glance you might consider that:

  1. your terminal's header suggest you are in one path, while

  2. your command's prompt suggest you are in a different path.

Try to "cd ..." to the portable's folder's path shown in the terminal header and enter

Code: Select all

# ./vivaldi-pup # Or any of the Vivaldi programs shown in your diagram

Hope this helps

FYI, it's go to the "scripts / exe" folder, rt-clk an empty space and "Window >> Terminal Here."

Now run: ./LAUNCH

Not certain as I'm not running Bionicpup32 just now. But Bionicpup64 has an option on its Right-Click pop-up menu to "run in terminal". So you can Right-Click the LAUNCH script (make sure it's NOT the LAUNCH_NL script under Bionicpup64) or --within the /vivaldi-portable/vivaldi folder-- the vivaldi-pup script and select "run in terminal". The first time you start vivaldi there's a noticeable delay as it creates and populates the 'profile' folder.

Thanks for all the input, as I mentioned I clicked on LAUNCH one folder up and there was no message, just did not launch. I should've have known that was a script and as suggested when I ran ./LAUNCH, I got the error message.

root# ./LAUNCH
./LAUNCH: line 7: 7135 Illegal instruction "$HERE/vivaldi/vivaldi-pup" "$@"

Sorry gychang, Mate.

As I don't run BP32 I will be unable to pinpoint your issue.

Either way, you should acknowledge my reply

Right, gang.

The second 'point' release of v3.7 - v3.7.2218.52 - is now out. Given that tallboy has been enthusing like crazy about it, I thought I'd best pull my finger out & get on with the 'portable' version ASAP!

The much talked-about speed increases have actually 'kicked-in' with this release, and they ARE pretty noticeable. I couldn't see what the fuss was about with the last release, but the decrease in page-loading times is a welcome addition.

We also have some package modifications from this release on.

--------------------------------------

You'll find that the 'PROFILE' directory is now created alongside the 'Launch' scripts, and is sym-linked into the main directory prior to startup. This is mainly to make it easier for those of you who wish to copy/link your own 'PROFILE' directory in place before firing it up; it's more obvious where it is now.

You will also notice the ffmpeg & Widevine updater scripts are now being used.....also alongside the 'LAUNCH' script on the top level. Experimentation has shown that out of ALL the "clones", Vivaldi is more fussy & fanatical about having the exactly correct versions of the media codecs than any of the others are. And if libffmpeg ain't just so, Vivaldi won't even condescend to start!

I've set things up so that libffmpeg.so and the WidevineCdm directory are updated immediately prior to startup. This adds perhaps 5-6 seconds to the startup time, but it does always ensure that Vivaldi has no grounds for complaining about the darn things..!

The 32-bit version updates both of the afore-mentioned items. The 64-bit version just updates libffmpeg.so; the "update-widevine" script quite clearly tells you it's not intended for the 64-bit release. This won't hurt anyway, since I borrow the Chrome version of WidevineCdm for this release, and this is always several releases newer than the ones the scripts fetch.

(And I've finally got around to removing the no-longer-needed 'PepperFlash' clause from the wrapper-script's Exec line...)

------------------------------------------------------------

Anyways, for those of you who wish to avail yourself of this steadily-improving browser in 'portable' format, you can find it at the usual location in post #1. I have it on good authority that if you seem to be having issues downloading from the "Drive", PaleMoon is apparently capable of dealing with it!

Posting from it now. Enjoy!

Mike. ;)

@xenial :-

They're probably right about the Widevine stuff in that link. The 32-bit DRM module hasn't been updated for a long time. When I can no longer watch NetFlix in 32-bit Puppies, then I'm afraid they'll have to be retired.....

(*shrug*)

And from the sound of things, even 32-bit Windows won't be around much longer either. It's not exactly unexpected, is it? 64-bit capable CPUs have been on the market for nearly 18 years, after all.....

.....and following on from the above, here's the portable version of Vivaldi v3.8.2259.42.

This is, I'm sorry to say, 64-bit only. As explained in the above link from Xenial, they couldn't get 3.8 to run as 32-bit. It crashes upon launch.....and there's no interest at the Chromium Project in "fixing" the issue.

Sign o' the times, I think.

You can find it at the usual link in post #1. Enjoy.

Re: Vivaldi 'portable' browser - 32-bit Widevine error

Post by JASpup »

If Vivaldi won't run due to a Widevine error, is that the browser or the construction of the app directory?

I just ran Iron 88 on the same 32 system without a hitch.

Code: Select all

root# The Widevine CDM is not installed. Attempting to fix this for the next restart.

If anyone is getting an error trying to log into Google accounts, you can probably fix it by checking the Settings → Privacy → Google extensions, enable Crypto Token box, & then restart Vivaldi.

edit: I am using the portable in Debian Dog bullseye Vivaldi 3.5.2115.87 (Stable channel) unknown (64-bit) per the about, which is probably not the most up to date version.

Is there an easy way to update an existing install? I'm on Vivaldi 3.5.2115.87.

Thanks...

If 32bit version then 3.8 is the final version for that architecture.

Vivaldi 32bit ended at version 3.8 i believe it was although i would suggest going back a version as their were compatibility issues in later 3.8 versions.

have you tried the vivaldi portable available on this forum?
