Somewhere Someone is using http Links on the Forum

Post by rockedge »

Hello everyone

I have noticed that there is somewhere in a post a link to something http. Causing a not secure warning. This is not acceptable.

Please review what you've posted and insure there are no links to insecure sites. It could be references to the murga-linux forum could be the cause and this will be fixed after the domain transfer occurs. Until then please be careful and help us get the "lock" back in the URL bar.

We also had the email system suspended because somehow the board's email address was hijacked and was used in a mass email SPAM wave. I have after hours of working on a fix got it going again. There may be some changes in the email system to see if future attacks can be prevented.

I am now working on identifying the exact vector the SPAMMER's used, so it can be closed.

Curious what you mean. Are you only talking about someone using http link to old forum or to this one? Do http links to anywhere else have anything to do with it - some sites do still just use http?

Actually, I don't understand what is to be checked exactly. I expect anyone that used to post links to the old murga forum must have used http links since that was all the old forum used and that would be tons of posts and links? Confused.

I doubt that a mere http link in a post can cause such a warning.
Here's an example: viewtopic.php?f=106&t=148

IIRC, the cause of "mixed content" warning can be, for example, embedded image or external avatar.
Like this one: viewtopic.php?p=12212#p12212

I've found one in a recent post of mine but this link is to another post on this forum. As I don't want to make another link it's to Mainline Puppy Distros>Legacy>Lucid 5287. The opening thread here contains many more http links all of which have been there for some time. Presumably, these links have only become a recent issue. In linking to other theads in the forum the forum itself seems to be making http links.

Regards,

Ken.

@JakeSFR

Also is correct, image urls can also be a cause of the warning. Something to be aware of.

Although the use of http sometimes has no alternative. The fact that we are aware of the security challenges is a big help in how we post information.

Also to note!! What ever measures everyone took seems to have fixed our situtation and the warnings have ceased!

Good work everyone!
