Informed of a Bug in the Search Feature

Post by rockedge »

We received an email pointing out an error when using the Search bar in the header.
With the keywords query "run terminal without root" a General Error is occurring. I can not so far duplicate this error using other multiple keyword search query's.

I have started a thread at the phpBB support forums to begin to address it.

So far this anomaly does not seem to effect the overall operation of the Forum.

This is weird. Being a sad old git with nothing better to do right now, I found that these variations produce the same result:
run terminal with root
root without run terminal
root run without terminal
terminal root run without
terminal root run with

...and possibly a few more variations. But I know when to stop.

A more general way to reproduce:

'test test test test' = error
'zxc zxc zxc zxc' = no error

I did try something similar, same number of words but with other letter sequences. Didn't have the same effect, and gave up after a few tries.

'and and and and'
'not not not not'
but
''or or or or'
was just too common.

I've switched search index backends to deal with the error at this time. Several configuration changes need to be investigated to allow for the growing size of the forum's database.

Speaking of bugs in the search feature, it ignores the word apt, saying it is to common. Fortunately if I'm searching for apt I can search for dpkg instead. That said, I don't think that forum members here are that apt to say the word apt, unless they are searching for the apt package.

I find the search useless unless you use the advanced search.
search.php

Here you can better ask and search for specific stuff.
Search within options, properly selected, can give much better results.

I also can't search for the word "pkg" because it is to short and and this makes it difficult to find a post that I may of written about said package manager.

I also can't search for the word "ssh" on this forum because it is too short. BTW in all these searches I'm searching for posts I've made about these topics so I include my username in the advanced search feature.

It's OK now, isn't it?
I can't reproduce any of the errors mentioned in this thread.

Also all 3-letter words are accepted, no matter how common.

Only the problem mentioned by @Keef remains: The forum search engine does not support phrases. One of the few cases where a Google search might produce a better result.

Yes I have been working on the search features of the forum. I have not yet experimented with the Sphinx search engine that is built in and how it works with phrases.

I have tried out a DuckDuckGo customized search but the results are disappointing so far.
