Afternoon, guys'n'gals.

The portable version of the new Vivaldi 3.5.2115.73 is now available for download.

No sign yet of the promised e-mail client; the link in the post above referred to a special 'developer' build that had the mail client built-in, and that could be a few builds ahead of stable, as most of you may be aware. It's not scheduled until early next year, anyway. Be patient!

As it is, all is functioning as expected. 32- and 64-bit builds are both available from the usual link in post #1. Navigate through and help yourselves.

Enjoy!

Mike. ;)

The portable version of the new Vivaldi 3.5.2115.73 is now available for download.

Downloaded and unzipped.
Loads and runs on Tharpup 6.0.6
sulu-002 doesn't load. terminal window gives:

Code: Select all

# ./LAUNCH
/initrd/mnt/dev_save/sulu+/Vivaldi-portable/vivaldi/vivaldi-pup: error while loading shared libraries:
libatk-bridge-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Unrelated: I'm seeing this in every portable I've tried today - If I drop a link onto the launch script two identical tabs open. Same thing if I open a webpage from keepassx.
Technically I'm not dropping onto the launch script - I'm dropping onto (the desktop browse icon) defaultbrowser:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
 "/mnt/home/tahr606/Vivaldi-portable/LAUNCH" "$@"

New release of Vivaldi-portable - 3.5.2115.87

Still no sign of the new, built-in mail client, but it's early days yet.

32- and 64-bit packages available from the usual link in post #1. D/l; unzip; put where you like.....outside the 'save', of course. Click to open, click 'LAUNCH' to launch. 'LAUNCH_NL' is required for very new Pups, like Fossapup64, etc.

Enjoy!

Mike. ;)

I believe the mail client in vivaldi needs to be enabled in a preference somewhere. It is a trial version of M3 they released.

Hi Mike,

Firstly, thanks for your continued producing of portable browsers. Unfortunately I am getting similar errors to @Dingo in trying to run the 64 bit version. I have tried on 3 64 bit current pups, busterdog64 and alsofatdog 811, all return the same or very similar error messages.

@Dingo / @TerryH :-

I'm at a loss, guys. I don't understand why you're having issues with this, because I'm not....

I've run this newest release in every single one of my 64-bit Pups; Puppy without save-file, browser without profile.....in as near as dammit to "factory condition" as it's possible to get.

@ Dingo:- I'm posting this, right now, from a pristine Xenialpup64 running in RAM, no save, and a freshly-created browser profile just moments ago.....it fired-up without a murmur, good as gold, like it always does. Your terminal output doesn't show anything actually missing! However....

-------------------

@ Terry:-

The one thing you and Dingo are both getting in common is the

Code: Select all

Trace / breakpoint trap

.....message. Experience has taught me that this invariably shows up when you're trying to run something as root that really wants to be run "as a normal user" (i.e., 'spot' in Pup's case.) I can't speak for the 'Dogs' - I've never used them, though I understand they're set-up like a mainstream distro - but I know James has set FatDog up to always run internet apps as 'spot'.

Yet it runs fine for me as /root!

@ Dingo:- You haven't by any chance set Xenialpup up to want to run browsers'n'stuff as 'spot', have you?

---------------------------------------------------

I haven't YET reached the point where I'm going to automatically build every browser to 'run-as-spot' simply because a minority of the community are constantly banging-on about how much "safer" it makes you. If that's how folks want it, they'll have to start building their own..! :)

While I was waiting for you to reply, I downloaded the latest Google Chrome, it ran without issue. I am currently using it. I just tried the Vivaldi running by pre-pending with run-as-spot. It gives the same errors. Never had issues with portable browsers, so I suppose, it's best to wait and see if more people have an issue.

no, I have not checked run internet apps as spot the weirdest thing is that trying to boot without an existent pupsave puppy pfix=ram I get the same error! Is my Thinkpad Lenovo L440 doomed?

EDIT

trying again, this time a window is shown with this message (in Italian, since i use puppy from Italy)

in English should be:

It appears that the profile is in use in another Vivaldi process (30530) on another computer (puppypc798). Vivaldi has blocked the profile so it is not damaged. If you are sure that no other process is using this profile, you can unlock the profile and restart Vivaldi.

This oriented me to look into vivaldi portable profile folder directory, since it appears that there were some things belonging to a computer that is not mine
there are several broken symlinks in Vivaldi-portable/vivaldi/PROFILE/ pointing to /mnt/sda3/SYSTEM/BROWSERS/PROFILES/Vivaldi/PROFILE'

It must have been a bad download. I re-downloaded and it ran first time without error. I suppose when it failed I should have checked to md5sum( they're there for a reason ;) ), which i did with the new download. So problem solved. Thank you.

@Dingo / @TerryH :-

DAMN!!!! I've 'cocked-up'.....again!

I'm really sorry about this, guys. My trouble is that I will build and pack these things late at night, when if I had any sense I'd already be in dreamland. Consequently, I'm often yawning fit to crack a jaw, and so tired I can't think straight...

And it's ALL self-inflicted. I can't blame anybody else..!

(It still needed checking in any case, Terry... I couldn't remember if I made this mistake with both re-builds, or just one; so I 'fixed', double-checked, re-packed and re-uploaded BOTH of 'em again, just to make sure. Glad it's working for you now, anyways!)

----------------------------------------

Thanks for the screenshot, Dingo. That was the 'clue' I needed, rather than having to embark on a spell of detective work.

What's happened is that you guys have downloaded the tarball, which still contains MY profile inside it! And it's no 'ordinary' profile, either; large parts of it are shared from a common profile, which I use with both arches of Vivaldi. Hence all those missing sym-links, y'see...

I have a large, external directory on a remote-mounted partition, where I keep all my portable browsers'n'stuff, with sub-directories for both arches. Custom Menu entries then start them from this location.

When I build upgrades, I copy 'em across to a working directory, make the alterations, check that they run OK, then pack them, and transfer them across for upload. BUT; I don't always remember to delete the profiles..! I link all my browser profiles from a third, "common" directory - absolute links, with full $PATHs, so I can move them anywhere and the sym-links still hold; makes it quicker and easier for testing purposes.

I'm afraid you're both victims of my sheer "cussedness"! But it's an easy 'fix'.

Just go one level further into the 'vivaldi' main directory, and delete the 'PROFILE' directory you'll find there. Now try launching it again..... (*prays...*) :D Should work now!

I've 'fixed' and re-packed 'em. The tarballs at the Drive are all "kosher" now.... What a "prat", eh?

--------------------------------------------------------

That small window Dingo spotted that said the profile had been 'locked' to prevent corruption, you get this when sharing a single 'portable' between Puppies. One thing the Chromium-based browsers check for upon startup is the 'unique identifier' for your OS, which can be found at /etc/machine-id. It's a 32-digit alphanumeric number, unique to each and every Linux OS install. Every time you shut your browser down, then fire it up in a different Puppy, up pops this window. It's just one of the multitude of redundant safety-checks the Chromium code-base appears to be littered with.... (*shrug*)

Let me know if that fixes it for you both, please..!

Mike. ;)

Now then, guys'n'gals...

Vivaldi 3.6 has been recently released, so here's a pair of 'portables' for

Vivaldi 3.6.2165.36

No "cock-ups", this time!

----------------------------

No sign of the e-mail client, yet. It is of course entirely possible that Vivaldi have decided to junk the whole project; it wouldn't be the first time something has been announced in the open-source world......which then never materialises. Instead, we've got..... (wait for it, wait for it)....

.....double-deckered "Tab Stacks"..!!!! (Yawn...) Image

(I suppose it gives the devs summat to talk about, doesn't it?  ) Ne'm mind, eh..?

----------------------------

You can find 'em at the usual location in post #1. Enjoy!

The email client is there mike although you have to enable it in vivaldi experiments. for goodness sake who has hundreds of tabs open at once.???..

I tried it and didn't like it..don't get me wrong it's a good browser for a niche userbase but i consider it a gimmick browser to attract more users.Another 3 million is needed to make it profitable and i was not comfy having a unique user-id reporting every 24hours. :(

@xenial :-

It's, um....."usable", I guess..! Not quite as "up to snuff" as I was expecting, mind.....although since it's already running within the browser itself, it's a lot easier for clicking on links, etc. Thunderbird's a touch awkward to get links working; you basically have to get it to fire up another browser. If you try to use the one you already have open, it won't respond.....

The jury's still out on this, TBH.

I see and thanks.
I don't generally use email clients and tend to read email within the browser itself.
I must declare i am still sitting on the fence in regard to the browser itself,i am not so sure i need all that glittering bling that it offers and there are some very long standing bugs which need addressing.
Not sure where they are heading with it and i'm left wondering what other niche feature will be added next.

I shall stick with my 2 trusty stalwarts...Firefox ESR and palemoon. :thumbup2:

Now then, boys & girls.

Upgrade time! We're now up to v3.7.2218.45......so here's the new 'portable' package.

Not much in the way of changes, OR silly additions with this release, with the exception of an important one. And that's the speed improvements in the parent, Chromium code-base, which are gradually percolating down to the various 'clones' as new releases are compiled/built & released.

It's not a startling improvement, but pages definitely load quicker than they used to.

High cpu usage when only homepage is open...it has a lot of bling but their interface is the issue unfortunately as it is still too sluggish.

Re: Vivaldi 'portable' browser - 32-bit & 64-bit

Post by Dingo »

@mikewalsh
There is something very strange: as I previously written here: viewtopic.php?p=16388#p16388 images in browsers Vivaldi and Chrome portable under Xenialpup64, were blurred.

I then discovered that it is an issue specific of xenialpup64 and my notebook Lenovo thinkpad L440 since 32 bit of your Vivaldi portable works fine in Xenialpup 7.0.5 32 bit and images in browser are very crisp (I cannot try obviously chrome portable 64 bit in xenialpup 32 bit)

I'll continue to investigate to understand the reasons of this strange issue

@gabtech:-

YouTube working fine for me with Vivaldi in Fossapup64 - posting from it now. I have NO time for social media (and I'm definitely not opening a Facebook a/c just to try it), so can't test video there.....and I've never used the "Dogs", because I can't stand the Synaptic package manager (drives me crackers, it does!)

When you say it's "not working", what exactly happens when you try to watch a video on YouTube? Any "clues"?

Mike. ;)

gabtech,

Haven't tried Mikes 64b version aboard Fossa but can confirm his 32b build plays YT just fine.

Aside from this test run, I'm siding with Mike. I'm not all that jazzed with Vivaldi.

I'm starting to wonder about their developers. Together with the 'note-taking' feature introduced in 3.1, it seems Vivaldi are starting to rely on sheer gimmickry to "sell" their browser.....

IMO, peebees "run-as-spot" Chromium build smokes this dog!

Uh, this is NOT to say you don't build a mean package, Mike. ;)

Nope, haven't gotten Mikes 64 build to run yet... Seems to be missing a few libs / symlinks.

I can however confirm that Vivaldi's latest snapshot runs YT OOTB.

Mike, this here below may be what gabtech is missing.

Hmm, YT played fine without this.

Way *snappier* on my end. run-as-spot (--no-sandbox) OOTB.

gabtech, if "libwidevinecdm.so" is on your system, try symlinking it to /opt/google/chrome.

Obviosly close, then reopen Vivaldi -- Go find a video to test.

It shouldn't actually be needed, Thru. Unlike its 'ancestor', Opera - which insists on this 'trick' - the Vivaldi-portable will happily make use of the included Widevine directory. For the 64-bitzer, I always borrow the version from current Chrome; for the 32-bitzer, I use the codec-updater that comes with the .deb package.

And, er, while I don't like to seem as though I'm "correcting" a Puppy veteran, your info is a wee bit out-of-date. It used to be just libwidevinecdm.so - nowadays, it's a self-contained directory called "WidevineCdm". Which contains libwidevinecdm.so, a manifest.json file (specifying version, and which "arch" it's for), & a license 'agreement' file. It's been this way for some 18 months or more.

(I tried modifying the codec-updater scripts to make them update the codecs in-situ, but the modifications wouldn't 'stick'. On top of which, I soon discovered that some of the stuff downloaded by the codec-updater - especially for the 64-bit version - was a long way out-of-date, and, moreover, was pointing to the 32-bit repo anyway..! So, I gave up on that idea....)

-----------------------------------

Thanks for the mention of Opera. Reminded me I hadn't updated the Opera-portable for around 3 months...

The new version is now here:-

Mike, aboard Fossa both Opera and Vivaldi portables throw what Mochi mentioned here.

A small correction then leads to a Pango error.

Odd because I can run the standard deb build straight-up outta /tmp without installing.

You know I've got everything loaded.

Aha! Same startup issue as here, Mike. Once I yank the line she's clear.

And YES! YouTube videos confirmed to play with BOTH Opera and Vivaldi 64b portables.

EDIT: After reading your post in the Opera thread we're clear.

Thank you, Sir. 8-)
