32Bit Browsers with Javascript for Tahrpup?

Hi all,
Is there a 32bit browser for Tahrpup that has been updated to handle Youtube's Javascript changes? Seamonkey does not, Palemoon does not, Firefox does not, Chromium does not, etc.

There are still a lot of 32bit users that use 32Bit machines. Unfortunately Youtube javascript changes mean no 32bit browser available to any version of Puppy will play youtube videos. This includes all quickpet and package manager versions.

Are you sure this is a java script problem? I have no problem playing youtube videos with my 32-bit Palemoon 28.14.2. I did change the value of media.libavcodec.allow-obsolute to 'true' in Palemoon's configuration (access by typing config:about in the address bar). You can also play youtube videos from an external site directly without actually going to the youtube site. BTW - The Palemoon browser that is builtin to Tahr Puppy is too old. I just checked Seamonkey and I could play youtube videos without changing any settings with Precise Puppy (which is older than Tahr Puppy so should work with Tahr too). I used Seamonkey version 2.48. I could play the videos from the youtube site (all the other stuff on the site also seem to work) as well as from an external site. Good luck.

PS: Did you try a newer Puppy like Bionic Pup 32-bit on your machine? It will be able to run newer versions of browsers out of the box.

Some more background:
Running 32bit versions of Tahrpup, Xenialpup and Bionicpup on a Dell Lattitude D810 (Pentium M single core 32bit 2.0GHz) with 2GRam built in 2004.
Browser is Palemoon 28.16.0.

Starting about 4 weeks ago started noticing Youtube video preview pages were loading very slowly. Did not matter if browser was palemoon or firefox. But once the preview page was loaded all was well. Then Started getting messages that a script was slowing down the loading of a page.
Only Youtube pages do this.

I copied 32bit Tahrpup to a 64bit machine. The same browser/OS works just fine. No slowness, no javascript messages. Tried this with 32bit Xenial, with same results.

Tried Seamonkey but the quickpets are out of date and get message stating the Browser does not know how to play the video.
Updating Seamoney failed as the quickpet version is too far out of date.

Palemoon can not be updated as it no longer supports 32bit. Same with Firefox for Tahrpup or Xenial.

The Palemoon site does not provide the newest compiled 32-bit version but there are still third parties compiling newer versions. I have a compiled version 29.01 which I use with Bionic 32-bit. As mentioned, you should try Bionic 32 as you would then be able to run most of the new browsers out of the box, As for your bogging down issues - could be many things. You don't have the most powerful machine looking at your specs and the new browsers are HEAVY for starters.

Edit: I see you have Bionic. Any difference? Try the latest browser version you can find with Bionic and see if it improves things.

If you still want to use Tahr, another option is probably Seamonkey 2.49, which was the last version before the GTK3 requirement (I think). As mentioned, version 2.48 definitely works. The latest version will work with Bionic. You can download directly from the Seamonkey site.

I agree with Amethyst. Unfortunately, modern browsers consume a lot of RAM to begin with.....and then opening a YouTube tab will consume a load more of it.

With Puppy running entirely in RAM as it does, Puppy+browser+YouTube tab = not much change out of 2 GB, unfortunately. You also have the additional issue, as amethyst points out, that 32-bit PaleMoon is now only available as special 3rd-party builds, since Moonchild Productions have dropped 32-bit completely.

I know there's still plenty of older, 32-bit-only hardware out there - ideal Puppy material, obviously - but you can't blame devs for concentrating exclusively on 64-bit these days. Commercially-available 64-bit machines have, after all, been on the market for almost 17 years.....and the 64-bit architecture enables addressing far larger amounts of your RAM, and utilising it more efficiently.

I'm aware you're kinda "stuck" with your Pentium M, and that it's 32-bit only. Also that your RAM is already "maxed out".

Suggestions? Mm.....

• You could try creating a larger swap partition (or adding one if you don't already have any).

• If you stay with UPupBB32, my Seamonkey-portable package (2.53.6) should work. (I think it's too much for Tahr32.)

SeaMonkey is not a personal favourite, despite for many years being the default Puppy browser/email suite. However, I have it on good authority that it's less demanding of scant resources than just about any other browser out there.....if you want a decent, up-to-date browser, that is.

Another alternative would be the Iron browser, from SRWare of Germany. For those of us on 32-bit hardware - or running 32-bit Puppies - this has for long enough been the 'default' drop-in replacement for Chrome. It's almost identical, and 32-bit builds are still currently produced alongside the 64-bit ones. The present version is v88.0.4500.0, based on Chromium 88.

(If you're obtaining your browsers from Tahr's Quickpet, do be aware that this is around Chrome v32/33. This is now something like 55 releases out of date! Small wonder it won't run anything.....and even if you're obtaining the 'newest' 32-bit build, this is v48.....still 40 releases behind. Google dropped the 32-bit Linux build of Chrome almost 5 years ago...)

For these 'portables' just d/l; unzip; then move the portable browser directory anywhere you like.....though preferably outside the 'save', as this way it doesn't take up space within. Click to enter, click 'LAUNCH' to fire it up. Very simple.

Everything in Tahr's Quickpet is now ancient.....and web standards have moved on a LONG way since those days, over 6 years ago. You can't blame Phil B. for NOT maintaining this particular repo; building & maintaining Puppies is a full-time job, Tahr went EOL almost 2 years ago, and Phil's built at least 4 or 5 newer, more up-to-date Puppies since then. There's a limit to what any one individual can do.....

Anyway; hope those perhaps help.

I see that oke who compiles the 32-bit Palemoons also release a GTK2 version. So perhaps one can run that one with an older Puppy. Strangely enough, I have found that Firefox actually seem to run smoother on my old machine but maybe I'm just imagining things.

I would not even consider visiting that forum to enquire about the 32bit builds as you will receive a ton of abuse.by the looks of things over at that dragon's den the windows 32bit builds have been given the chop also.

I ,like you have found that firefox runs pretty darn good on my modest laptop.

on a d810 PIII mobo, bionic pup 32 19.03 boots to the # prompt, xorg starts,
the screen goes blank, and stops, nothing seems to work, only hard reset,
is there another gi that might work ?

Not true. Here's the latest info regarding their Win 32-bit support: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=27121

They did drop all 32-bit support for the Basilisk-browser, but Basilisk is a separate product from Pale Moon.
