Much better if this latest revision of xorg-autoconf will be used for testing
hi mistfire just to say that the new xorg-autoconf is now working in vmware :thumbup2: . i've been testing it on few different computers (not just vmware) and i'm really liking it. it actually fixes quite big issues on my desktop running nouveau. I am going to use it in fossapup although i've removed the radeon exa acceleration line as causes issues for me with picom.

thanks!

That's nice. May I know what lspci output of the computer that uses radeon driver which cause picom issue when exa acceleration is enabled?

conky-gtk

Post by thinkpadfreak »

Hello.

I am preparing Japanese translation for fossapup64, and have found what I think is a mistake in the conky-gtk script:

line 20

Code: Select all

export TEXTDOMAIN=quickpet
If quickpet.mo was newly created, it would conflict with, or overwrite the existing quickpet.mo.

note that this is a pretty low end netbook and so the extra cpu usage is quite noticeable.
below are some pictures with & without exa in a resting state. cpu usage climbs dramatically when moving a window on the screen.

hi Grey ,
if you remove the bios files from the .sfs i can add this to quickpet. Maybe create a small app to go in the .sfs that can down load and install the bios's.

also i don't know what most are those are for so maybe have sub menus .... ie playstation1, gameboy, spectrum, amiga, c64 etc

For obvious reasons in 64bit PCs, could we have GRUB-customizer included with GRUB2-EFI utils.

Thanks for any consideration

Removing bios is not a problem. But I think maybe to make a bunch of pets for each emulator separately? And make a separate shell for launch. I was here at my leisure digging into the Gtkdialog and remaking your quickpet into a Zapuskalka, which means "funny launcher" in Russian and I use it to quickly launch programs for sound and graphics making. Maybe based on it I will make a downloader and launcher for emulators. I just need to figure out how to upload files to nluug or something and then use script /usr/local/quickpet/downloader2 to download from nluug.

Grey i reckon keep them all in the .sfs and then have a launcher (based on quickpet) . the tabs could be spectrum c64 arcade amiga etc, a tab for each type.... and on the tabs.... a launcher, a bios installer a link to roms and some info for each emulator

Okay, I'll try it in my spare time. Still need to add more emulators :)
And I wanted to ask for a long time. Why doesn't the Print Screen key work when the main Menu is open? If menu is not on the screen, then Print Screen launches mtPaint with a screenshot. But if menu is open, then Print Screen does nothing. Is this a bug or a feature :) ?

As already explained in my pxruler thread I find it problematic, if not to say wrong, that the Group option in .jwmrc forces all gxmessage/xmessage windows to display without a title. This also applies to Bionicpup64.

I scanned the complete Fossapup64 for the usage of gxmessage. In total only 14 instances, of which 7 explicitely set a title and therefore have their setting ignored by the JWM configuration. Only 3 use the default and *may* benefit from the Group setting, and even that is not certain.

gxmessage setting in /usr/local/haiku-basho/bashobash.sh is incorrect and needs fixing

For details please refer to the attachment.

Executing script from Geany (shortcut F5) does not work. Setting is wrong.

Change
Edit > Preferences > Tools > Terminal
from
rxvt -e "/bin/sh %c"
to
rxvt -e /bin/sh "%c"
(actually no quotations are required as %c is an alias for ./geany_run_script.sh)

Dear 666philb,
Thanks for your effort for Fossapup.
Could you suggest to me an input method framework for Chinese in Fossapup64?
I have tried to use PPM2.1.2 to install scim, ibus, fcitx, and fcitx5, however, all of them do not work with Fossapup64.
Among them, ibus almost work but cannot show window for select word, I can only input English.

I understand the efforts to getting this PUP to a level of stability and currency. I applaud all the work going into this by everyone.

On the language issue, an important one, does the current WOOFCE builds have a formal method published? OR does the current PUPs use the same strategy for language that @BarryK use in his builds? If so, hopefully the language experts can make available the translations in the same way Barry's seems to be approaching this.

I know how busy you are and maybe this requires others on the forum, of knowledge, to offer direction.

This ability for add'l language expands the number of world-wide developers and users to contribute to the maturity of Puppy Linux. Everyone benefits! (YES, I know this is obvious)

If anyone needs it, then here Doom 3 .pet and .sfs (it's your choice). Includes original Doom 3, Resurrection of Evil and 5 fan mods:
Classic Doom 3, Denton's Enhanced Doom3, Fitz Packerton, HardQore2 and Scarlet Rivensin: The Ruiner, therefore the file is 3 gigabytes in size.
There is a homemade launcher which can be run from Menu--Fun--Doom3launcher. It will be good if someone later tells if he heard the music in launcher.

Earlier I have reported on problem of using FossaPUP Chrome/Chromium utility to add these browsers to current release. Once utility adds them, there are problems in sign-in & use.

But, today, I am happy to report that I have found an installer for this PUP that works. It is from a PUP member @ETP. It is attached and works, beautifully for this as well as other PUPs. To install, download-install the attached PET. Click the Menu>Internet>Get Chrome... "The happy Puppy will fetch it and install"

Hope this finds its way into FossaPUP.

Enjoy.
Updated: The following post shows a current version for building Chrome in FossaPUP. 8-)

@Clarity,

May I ask that you remove the MK12 pet from the above post as it dates from March 2019 and use the attached
MK15 pet from May 2020. There have been multiple changes since March 2019 relating to the suppression of warning
messages & different splash screen methods are now used.

It is also vital to point out that my "Get Chrome" pets are intended to run Chrome as root rather than as spot and
should only be used if you are comfortable with that. They actually use the official Chrome .deb and do not
break CUPS. Another objective is to get the best possible performance from Chrome.

Both Barryk & Phil seem to prefer running as spot so I have not previously offered these pets in anything other than
my own puplets.

For anyone who has already downloaded & installed the MK12 pet and is happy with the above caveats simply use ppm to
uninstall the MK12 version then install the MK15 pet (No need to uninstall Chrome)

EDIT: 21st Aug 2020
Forum member @Clarity has identified a problem with the MK15 pet in that whilst it
suppresses all "running as root" warning messages a side effect of one of the flags used
blocks the use of sync. If you do not use sync options within Chrome and are unlikely to
ever do so, stick with the MK15 pet.
If you use sync or may do so in the future please use the attached MK15.5 pet which allows
for syncing at the expense of displaying one root warning message.
Thanks go to @Clarity for raising this issue & testing both pets.

Thanks.

Re: Fossapup64 9.0.5 RC3

Post by 666philb »

Fossapup64 9.0.5 RC3 uploaded.

It would be helpful if you didn't use an old savefile/folder when testing as this will block out some of the changes that need testing

This was meant to be the release but there's been a few big changes so it's RC3. I'll leave this up for a week or so and if no major issues, it will be renamed 9.5 and will be the release.

changes:

kernel updated to 5.4.53 & updated firmware ...... this fixes @davids45's wifi dongle problem and is also the first kernel since bionicpup64 to boot without setting nomodeset on my desktop
xorg-autoconf by @mistfire now auto writes the xorg.conf
geany downgraded a version and is now quicker to open.
true transparency enabled in conky so no more black square
quickpet ... added lot's of .sfs and 2 nvidia drivers
browsers from quickpet now run as spot (fixes gmail login problem)
xlock fixed
claws-mail-feeds-reader added
fixed chess engine in eboard chess
@MochiMoppels gxmessage fix
fixmenus now in menu

there's an issue with picom and nouveau that can cause high cpu usage. best solution is to install the nvidia driver. if there's no driver for your card (old card) comment out # the "nouveau" line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restart X. This will use the modesetting driver but this has trouble setting other resolutions. If you have to use nouveau & resolution setting doesn't work (and you need it), you will have to disable picom menu>>>desktop>>jwmdesk>>window effects

Frugal, fresh new save folder.

Frugalpup installer.
Click on help button on main window.
Browser starts and get error.
file:///usr/share/doc/frugalpup.html not found.
File is missing from usr/share/doc

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Frugal, fresh new save folder.

menu->Setup->Puppy Installer->main startup window.

The info, for the old Puppy installer, is helpful, about it not supporting UEFI.

But the info about Frugalpup installer, does not say it does support UEFI.

Suggest to add UEFI support to the info for Frugalpup Installer.
