My text window has a second window beside it headed 'paragraphs'. It's a format control window. How do I close it pls?

Look in view->User Interface
Probably have sidebar selected.
So uncheck sidebar and select one of the other options.
Also, in view->Toolbars
All kinds of options for toolbars
The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
