the new hardware. For some reason, (possibly bios?) the wifi card is not detected on either fossa or thar. Searched all over and cant get it to work, even on tahr64 which ran the card in the old computer..

Tried grep, nothing and hardinfo, nothing. Is it possible that the new motherboard simply refuses to use wifi? :?:

Are both computers laptops?

Both are desktops. The one I am building is in a maxi tower, barely fits under my desk ;)

I believe that the issue is I have the network card in a slot that is shared with the video card. Here is the layout. I have the video card in slot 1. The network card in slot 2. And the sound card in slot 5. The board is set up for crossfire, up to 4 video cards. I think if I move the video card to one of the 2 black slots it might free up the blue slots?

Edit. No Go

Puppy Linux. It just works!

The manual says this:
For single VGA card (Graphics card) use slot 1.

That looks like a normal setup for one Graphics card.
Most motherboards make that first slot provide full support for x16 requirements.

I assume this WIFI card is made to go in the slot that is pcie slot 2.
That seems to be the only pcie mini slot on this motherboard.
Is this correct?

Also this WIFI card is not marked for Dell, Hp, or any other specific brand of computer?
It is just the Intel card?

Yes, the card is a pcie 1x ver 2. which should be backward compatible with the ver3 slot. I read up on the slots and it should fit and work in any slot that supports 1x 4x even if it does not fill the slot. Tried that too. The specs say Intel 5300 Compatible Slot PCI-E X1/X4/X8/X16

As far as I can tell. it is marked intel 5300, it has 3 antennas and was running on the other computer(an old hp) on tahr64 just fine. I believe it was using module iwlwifi and was detected on install without having to do anything.

it simply doesn't show up in pupsysinfo , hard info or grep.

I have tried loading intel wireless modules too from the network wizard too and have found no active interfaces.

Perhaps I damaged it when I pulled it however I am beginning to think that the motherboard has issues, none visible but the previous owner said he got a new one because the lan quit on reboot after a win10 update. It looks like this one.

YEAH! I was just stubborn enough to get it going. Believe it or not I put it in slot 6 and it came to life. :thumbup2: Faster than the wired nic I had in it.

Gonna try it on the 2.4 next just to see. Thanks for not giving up on me.

Hell. I wish WE had connection speeds like that, here in the UK.....

About the only places that get anywhere near those kinds of figures are the big conurbations.....like London, Birmingham & Manchester. That's where the telecoms giants throw all their resources at, heavily prompted by the UK gov't, who want these areas to grow & become larger to attract business, of course.

Unfortunately, the population density in these areas has had a negative effect during the pandemic, since these are where the newer COVID variants have spread farthest and fastest.....resulting in some truly staggering death tolls.

Do not feel bad!
We have the same speed issues in the United States.
The big cities and large population areas, get all the speed.
We in other areas, get the left overs

We have been fortunate here with internet. I worked with someone from the local phone company back when they were testing DSL. They have since gone FTTH, (Fiber to the home) with gigabit internet. Vermontel has claimed "First and Fastest" for years. This is the first time I have had a computer fast enough to utilize it ;) We only subscribe to the 100 meg service. It is nice to get connections like that, a bit pricey now that I am no longer considered a "DSL Pioneer".

We are about 40 minutes drive from the nearest "City" here. There are a lot of other places with different providers, fortunately we live in an area where our phone provider has always been on top of things. I feel sorry for the folks in other areas who have providers that have sold their lines to other companies. A lot of the bigger companies have gone to cellular only and the folks left with the copper often lines have 1/2 meg service or dialup.

Vermont is working on getting everyone "High speed" though it has been a struggle for other providers. We have had a lot of small local isp's who try to get started but the "big boys club" squashes them and claims they will take care of it, (Which doesn't happen often.) Some have made it however through their towns, though they are not allowed to extend their service beyond their town lines.

@peppyy :-

Figures..!

Despite the plethora of phone providers over here, everybody uses the same network that is provided & maintained by British Telecom, who originally set everything up, of course.

BT have gone as far as to provide Fibre into every community - fortunately, we're on the outskirts of a town, so our speeds are nowhere near as bad as right out in the sticks - but this is often only to the actual exchange; from that point on, it's copper out to the individual property. And that's where the drop in performance occurs.

We used to be on a 'capped' monthly plan, but last year we switched to an "unlimited" one, at long last.....along with which, we got a considerable speed 'hike' as part of the bundle - which itself goes to show that your ISP has full control over whether they 'throttle' you or not. (Well, it's actually 100 GB/month, but considering the most I've ever used in any one month is around 25-30 GB, it may as WELL be 'unlimited' as far as I'm concerned!)

And for me, most of that goes on NetFlix...

These are average speeds for us:-

Image

Not a patch on yours, of course, but by UK 'regional' standards, this is pretty good... Previously, we were on about 7 MB down, and 2MB up, so.....it represents about a 500% speed increase for us. And I'm NOT complaining about that..!

Mike. ;)

 That is about what I got with this same card in my old computer. I haven't tried my 802.11 (g) yet as our router has a 5.4ghz built into it in the next room (about 2 meters away).
I am sure we are throttled at times and most of ours is also Netflix in the evening. In fact that was what I originally built the old computer for. Now we have a Roku our daughter gave us so when the grandkids come over they can watch their shows. Of course I haven't seen them in quite a while with the virus going wild in the ski areas nearby. Don't get out very much lately.
