Oh no, some of the ladies are sweet. They must have their reasons why they don't put more clothes on.
Why not link directly to the screenshot? Does your image hoster care if you do that?

Morning, Mochi.

No, PostImage doesn't care if I do that. I use the thumbnails for one simple reason.....because it saves on rockedge's bandwidth. And especially with full-screen images, where you want to see the whole thing in all its glory; a 1920x1080 image uses quite a LOT of it.

As for "clean" & "dirty"? I got into the habit of that, years ago, on the Ubuntu Forums; it was the way most folks over there displayed things. It came back to me last night, and I thought, "Why not?"

:?:
Rockedge's bandwidth is not affected at all. Rockedge's server sends just a link. It is your/our bandwidth that is affected with a double punch:
1) Thumbnail has do be downloaded (not a big deal)
2) Since thumbnail is too small to view details, user has to click. And this not only triggers the download of the huge main image, it also downloads all the advertisement crap of the hoster's web page. All this at the expense of your/our bandwidth.
So again my question: Why not link to the image instead of linking to the hoster's web site? Even if I follow your link I can't see your screenshot in "all its glory" because the hoster scales it down to the width of the browser window.

BTW: The site placed new adds, not quite as lovely as the last ones. And they even partly cover your screenshot :shock:

Hi, Mochi.

Hm. I see... Point taken! :lol:

Seems like I've been labouring under a misapprehension all these years... :oops: I'll stick with the direct links in that case.

Thanks for the clarification.

Thank you, Phil.. I am very happy jcc into fossa64. I encountered a little problem when I chose the same color as the inactive window color (# D6DBD6). The foreground is not that different from the Active window. So by changing the /root/.jcc/jwmrc-theme-window-only and /root/.jcc/jwmrc-theme files on line 15, from

Code: Select all

<Foreground>#222</Foreground>
to

Code: Select all

<Foreground>#555</Foreground>
will make them look different.

since I work with both linux and windows (occupational hazard) my desktops follow a formula of having the same layout, folders, and tools for both operating systems. Here's mine for fossa.

@ETP - LIKE the video showing navigation and product demos.

I am in favor of the "Audio Notification" that your desktop demonstrates. I am hopeful this kind of technology is used more and more in our PUPPY experience. This is a definite step as we continue into the 21st century.

Thanks for showing us the way.

@Clarity:-

I don't know about "Audio Notifications" (though they're not hard to set up). I use the following as a start-up sound:-

peebee showed the way when he first released UPupBB; he employed a start-up sound when that booted. I've used more or less the same kind of thing, albeit with a modified script to suit my own needs (plays at a suitable volume level during boot, without blasting your ears off).....and a suitable 'jingle' that it took a little while to hunt down. There's thousands out there to choose from; you've just got to be prepared to spend a while to listen to 'em to find what you want.....

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
amixer -c 0 -- sset Master playback -36dB
mplayer /usr/share/audio/logon-1.mp3 &

(I use this across all my Pups; it's my specific 'Puppy' startup jingle..!)

Yes, I am aware of the modifiers to replace "bark-bark". But what @ETP is presenting is a notification based upon a system true/false activity. The notification "springs" when that activity changes, AFAIK

This type of notification based upon a 'system-level event' is "new" to Puppy linux beyond bark-bark; Not to mention it is in a human-voice.

I would envision we may see more and more "spoken" notifications that alert the user of something important.

I do realize that I am unaware of a formal voice activated notification protocol yet in place across the Linux spectrum; so use of any notification for a system event may be on a case by case basis.

Admittedly, though, this is both extremely useful; not to mention, as, it is novel.

Okay, remember I am still in testing mode however you can see I have been doing that since 1.0.9 (or before). I found one of my old desktop images from an old thinkpad and used it as a background. It says, "Puppy 1.0.9 It's a wild thing" Haven't finished my shortcuts etc yet. It will look much better on my real monitor.

@wizard :-

If you like that wallpaper of jactek's, you can find a similar selection (or variations thereof!) by Googling for

Code: Select all

"liquid metal desktop wallpapers"

See what else you can find....

Yeah, there's a LOT of good stuff out there, but you've got to be prepared to spend the time to track it down. It was through Googling that exact same search term that I found the one which, in various modified forms, was used across the entire kennels prior to the old Compaq tower "breathing its last". Like you, I like anything that's unusual, and a little bit "different" to the whole standard 'high-tech' look that seems to be prevalent across large swathes of the global community these last few years....

Added to which, graphic design & 'customising' has been a thing with me for decades (ever since leaving school in the late 70's; I based my Art 'A'-level portmanteau around poster design & societal influence), so.....it's the one area with Puppy where I can really let my hair down, and go just a wee bit 'crazy'.....!! :D :lol:

I take the not unreasonable view that, since I have to look at it every day, I may as well have something I like looking at....

(*shrug*)

It is starting to settle in. I made the mistake of running first run settings to change my machine name so I had to set the desktop op again ;)
One of these days I might get around to making myself some custom icons and getting my menu finished. Just been having too much fun with apps.
