Acer Aspire won't unmount for install (Solved)

Post by AreTwo »

Hi - after "Explaining Computers" gave you top marks I decided to install bionicpup 32.
my rig:
Computer Acer Aspire
Intel Atom N270 @ 1.6 GHz
64 bit Compatible NO
Memtot 1010144 KB
Internal ssd 146G Location sda1
Bionicpup32-8.0-uefi.iso

It boots OK from SD but won't unmount the SSD, so won't install. (seems to be save file open)
So I reboot and cancel saves and install starts but fails saying app called (something like) pccputemp won't run on your device. and stops.
Any help appreciated ... :-?

Hello!
the pmcputemp error means that the pmcputemp package will not start because of machines hardware lacks the sensor...most likely, but this should not interfere with Bionic32 from starting and running as expected.

So let's get to the bottom of this.....how did you boot Bionic32 ? How is it set up on the SDD?

Do you get a boot splash page with boot options? If so is the option to choose to operate totally in RAM without a savefile /folder present?

How exactly are you doing the install?
Using an installer program and which one?

How is the SSD partitioned and what format are the partition(s)?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Thanks for help so far.
I downloaded Bionicpup32-8.0-uefi.iso and created a USB stick.
My SSD has a Ubuntu full install on it, which is slow so I'm trying to over write it with bionicpup.
I did use WRONG option and NOT RAM version which I will try now (great tip thanks)
I think this is my problem as unmounting the SSD was the deal breaker for the install.

I'll retry using RAM only option and post the result. Thanks guys.

OK - started PUP RAM only and everything setup fine - found WiFi etc and worked
Used system/Installer, re partitioned SSD to Ext2 (as suggested) as it was Ext4 and all installed fine (no error messages at all)
Came to Grub and I have stuffed up Grub.... The install asked about dual booting etc and I don't want it so just Ok'ed out and restarted.
It now just boots to Grub rescue.
I googled help for that and tried set prefix=(hd0,msdos1)/boot/grub then insmod normal failed
error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found

Again, help please.

The Puppy Installer program does not install a boot loader needed to boot the Bionicpup32 install.
You have to do that separately using a boot loader install program.
With there being legacy bios and UEFI bios computers and how they boot.
What boot loader to use and how to set it up is a little confusing.

You still have the old grub boot loader that Ubuntu was using.
You have to manually put an entry in it to boot Bionicpup32 or install a new boot loader replacing the old grub one.
You can try to install the Grub4dos Boot loader.
Use Grub4dos bootloader config.
Select the SSD as device to install on.
Select search within only this device.
Use the default settings and change nothing else.
OK.
OK.
OK.
Done.

Now try to boot from the SSD.
May need to go into the computers bios and disable secure boot.

If all you want on the SSD is Bionicpup32.
I suggest you start over fresh.
I suggest you use the Frugalpup Installer program to do the install.

Boot Bionicpup32 from the USB install and do all this from it.

This is what I do.

Using Gparted program.
Delete all partitions on the SSD.
Setup the SSD with 2 partitions.

First one, small 300MB, fat32 format, flagged boot. (location for boot loader files, boot partition)
(this is UEFI standard requirement, and some computers, look for a fat32 partition, for boot loader files)

Rest of drive, whatever other partition(s), but one ext 3 or 4 format. (location to put frugal installs)
Ext 2 format is OK, but it can get corrupted easier.

Run Frugalpup Installer main program.
On the main window are selection buttons.
Select the Puppy button, to do the install.
Go through install process, selecting to install to the ext formatted partition on the SSD.
Note:
When selecting the partition to install to.
A window pops up, giving option to make a directory, to put the frugal install in.
I make this directory and usually name it, the name of the Puppy version.
Carefully read that windows info.
Press enter, makes the directory, not the OK button.
complete the install.

When it gets back to the main Frugalpup window.
Select the boot button.
Select the location of the frugal install, on the SSD.
Select the small 300MB partition on the SSD, as location to install the boot loader. (may need to scroll the selection window)
Select the boot loader type.
UEFI
mbr ->legacy bios boot
both

You can install the UEFI for UEFI computers, mbr for legacy bios computers, or both, to boot anything.

The UEFI will also install the needed files, to support secure boot enabled in UEFI.

When you first boot the SSD, on a UEFI computer, with secure boot enabled.
A process will start, to allow you to install the Puppy security key, to the computer.
It will add this Puppy key, to the other ones, loaded on the computer.

If you want to do another Puppy version frugal install to the SSD, so you have multiple Puppy frugal installs.
Do the complete Frugalpup Installer process again, for the new Puppy version.
When you run the boot loader install.
It will make entries, for all installs it finds, on the USB drive.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Good news - it works now.
Rockedge, I'm not dual booting, which is why I stopped the Grub process, but now I know I need to complete Grub, which I have done.
Bigpup, thanks very much for detailing the "correct" setup I should have used. I do like "correct" things so will probably re-do the install as you have laid out. Thanks for the effort.
Its the basis for a booklet "Installing bionicpup the right way", which I would have liked to read before I did my install.
For now though, I booted from the USB stick and ran grub4Dos which installed in the SSD and now it boots fine, and I can learn how to use it.

Thanks again for your help, and I can't see how to close this but happy if you do so.
