"upgrading" from FossaPup-64 to Community Edition

Post by Subito Piano »

So, I've been loathe to switch from FossaPup-64 to the CE because I've made SO many tweaks. If I install the CE alongside my FP-64, will it, can it use my existing .config file and installed software? Will it tear my .config file to shreds? (I have backups of everything.)

Thanks!

Only way to know is try it.

If you have frugal installs of each one as separate folders.

You could try using the save from Fossapup64 9.5 as the save for F96-CE_4.

See if it has any issues.

Just make a copy of the Fossapup64 save and place it in the frugal install of F96-CE.
Boot using the save.

To make sure F96-CE is setup to boot using a save.
Boot it fresh for the first time.
Do nothing but shutdown making a save.
Make sure to make same kind of save as Fossapup64 is using (save file or folder).

Boot Fossapup64 so it is running the computer.
Delete the save in the F96-CE frugal install folder.
Replace it with the Fossapup64 save copy.

Then boot F96-CE and it should now use the new save.

Seems to be using the same name for the save in each version.
So no name change is needed for the copied save to work.

Note:
Usually you can not use a save from one named Puppy in another named Puppy.
But F96-CE is an updated version of Fossapup64, so good chance they are compatible enough.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Remember that 'PulseAudio' is used for CE.

ALSA handles the audio for FP95.

THAT is prety much what i was wondering.

@Jasper

Remember that 'PulseAudio' is used for CE.

That is one of the features which draws me to the CE. Another is out-of-the-box Bluetooth, but i managed to configure that in FP64-9.5.

It's been a long day setting up a new HD in a new (to me) desktop for work. (It's a MONSTROUS HP Envy 23  - - for a fellow who prefers 11.6" notebooks....sigh... Long story but suffice to say I now require a second pair of glasses for piano playing and computer work; the bifocals just aren't cutting it anymore.)

I'll post back when i test, though it may be a bit....

Thanks!

Could be an issue that may require deleting sound settings from the copied save.

But I think it would not use them and you would need to setup sound settings again.

The settings in the copied save will be for the computer it was made on.

So using it on a different computer usually does require going over all the config setups and making settings for this computer.

If you would like use the 'touch screen' capabilities of your monitor, you could try QuickPup64 or FatDog64.

I've not yet experimented with the CE, but with FP64, touch screen works OOTB. More later.

Interesting that I've several times used my .config file from one laptop to another, issues are minor. Another great thing about Linux. Image

OKAY! I'm on Easter break (school is out for 10 days), giving me a little time to experiment. Essentially, I made an "abridged" copy of my system onto a USB drive, made sure it worked correctly, then loaded F96-CE up in a subdirectory on the USB stick and moved my old fossapup64save into that folder. Upon rebooting, I was asked if I wanted to upgrade from F95 to F96, warned that this could break my system, and offered the option to say "no," whereupon it would boot up F96 in RAM. Since this was a copy of my system, I had nothing to lose. Upon reboot, I was given the ption of booting into either 95 or 96 and chose the latter.

Well, it worked almost without any glitches! Mind you, I did NOT do an exhaustive test, but things seemed to work well. I typically run waterfox under spot and it didn't use my .waterfox save file, so that might have taken some configuration -- and there may have been other issues, but I think nothing major that someone used to Puppy couldn't fix. The one glitch (as I was warned) was pulseaudio -- it wouldn't load, I worked on it for maybe 15 minutes to no avail, noted that under "Setup" in the menu there was no "Pulseaudio Sound Wizard" and took no more time trying to get it to work (since this was an experiment).

Upon powering down, I was given the option to save or to not save. Interesting... I chose not to save, and upon rebooting, it again asked if I wanted to upgrade -- so presumably, my fossapup64save and .config directories were left untouched. Later, I moved the fossapup64save back to its original location, then rebooted into the original F95. Everything seemed to work fine, including sound (SHORT test, not exhaustive) -- but my desktop icons were the default set, not mine - an easy fix.

SO -- anyone trying this, FIRST (of course) BACK UP YOUR SYSTEM!!!!! If you wish, post your results. Me, I'm not upgrading permanently, as I've got F95 working the way I like it. Again, thanks to Jasper and BigPup.

Pulse Audio was a new thing when it was put into F96-CE and setting it up to work was a little setup process,

Look here for the link to information on how to do it.
viewtopic.php?t=8392

This was before Puppy really got a good working GUI config program for Pulse Audio setup.

Most of the time it needs some setup help to pick the correct device to use for sound.
