e able to boot puppy live mode then you should be able to install puppy on a separate/another usb drive using that live puppy. Do you have another usb drive?

no i dont have another usb
are there a way to save changes?
i dont know how

If it boots to a working desktop.

Do a shutdown and you should be asked to make a save. The save stores changes and uses them on next boot up.

Choose the USB partition as place to store it.
(Look on desktop for what the USB drive partition is identified as, should be dive icons lower left, one for each drive partition the computer has)
Yours is probably sdb1 if single partition on the USB stick, If more partitions on it,sdb2, etc.....

Not knowing what partitions and their format are on the USB stick.

You could be setup to have save auto work as talked about here:

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Alright @retro_bread - I tried downloading Universal USB Installer and installed bookwormpup 10 and would have to say, I too am experiencing the same issue. First, I had to prepare the usb drive before I could proceed to the next step which is to select what distro I would like to install. Everything was grayed out. After the prep, I chose the downloaded bookwormpup and clicked on "create". This installed bookwormpup just fine and was able to boot. But when I reboot and created a savefile, it went through the process with one thing missing. It didn't ask me where I would like to save it. The last window that showed up, where you confirm everything, it just says saving in "ventoy". I clicked save and then it rebooted as if I am booting for the first time. When I tried searching for the dpupbw64save.4fs file, it's nowhere to be found.

My recommendation, use Rufus. That one created the savefile for me.

For future reference, if you again have to do the creation under Windows and end up with a READ-ONLY USB-Key on which you CAN'T create a SaveFile/Folder: https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 85#p102085.

A couple of things you should keep in mind, especially as a Beginner. Backup your SAveFile/Folder. If you make a mistake which you can't undo, that mistake has only been written to the SaveFile/Folder. If you have a Backup, you can simply delete that SaveFile/Folder and activate your Backup. There are 'How to' posts; but don't hesitate to ask.

With Puppy on your USB-Key you are operating under PupMode 13. See, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 183#p97183. That means no Changes are Saved unless you Click the Desktop Save-Icon. You can test the effect of anything you've changed by Menu>Leave>Restart Graphical Server: Puppy re-catalogs. If you're not happy you can Shutdown/reboot, select NO-Save; or just walk away. If you don't click Save, Puppy will reboot in 60 seconds without Saving.

There are a lot of applications available to Bookworm which you don't have to install. They work like portables under Windows. See Mikewalsh's complete list, viewtopic.php?p=48734#p48734. But don't stop there. Bookworm64 can use many AppImages you'll find on the Web; and the applications by Devs other than Mikewalsh can be found on the Additional Software Section, viewforum.php?f=7
