Hello @szept

More info please. For example, do you/if you restart your PC does "X" load and the boot finish?
You wrote that this happened twice in the past month. You seem to be using your PC now.

Suggestions: Re-seat your RAM modules.
Unplug/re-attach cables in your system.

Yes, after reboot all went fine and these two events happened on my old PC. Ok, I'll try to re-seat RAM cards and check the cables. Thanks!

@szept

I'm off-topic now. You mentioned "my (your) old PC". There is good reason to believe that the "old PC" will have a longer life that the "hot" PC.

This is a very interesting link:
->

I wonder what the life of a "hot" PC (or more correctly) "hot" CPU is?
I have a number of laptops dating from 2006 and more recent. My gues is that these older microprocessors will out-live more modern uPs. The general rule is that increasing the temperature by 10C halves the life of an electronic 'system'.

Back on topic (a little). My 'main' desktop has a 2012 BIOS. A few months ago it would fail to boot intermittently. Say once every 2 months, then once every week. Then BAM! - would not boot. Pulled the RAM modules, cleaned the edge connector with (probably) iso-propyl alcohol. Since then - for probably 6 months - not a single instance of non-booting. The point here is that the timing between CPU and RAM is so precise that a few tens of ohms of resistance on the bus acts with the small capacitances to skew the clock. The result? Failure to boot or some other intermittent failure.

Don't trash that old PC. Potentially it's more likely to survive than it's better, hotter brother.

In the photo, that "Waiting for kernel video drivers to load:" has a little extra delay, "sleep 0.5", in Easy 6.6.2, which might be what is needed to fix the situation where sometimes Xorg aborts. Hopefully.

Just done it again.

Right before, the monitor goes black (like switching off) and back on again. Not sure if it happens on other monitors. RAM cards reconnected and slots ventilated by a natural blow ;]
Maybe I shall do the same to the graphic card. Anyway.
Not sure if it's not a coincidence, but I think it happens when I switch tabs in Vivaldi browser (the screen goes black, but most of time goes back again after a second), but only when browser's window is maximised.

That's a worry!
Does that happen in Chromium?

No idea as I only use Vivaldi. I can try Chromium for a while and I'll let you know.
The weir thing is - when it's fine, it's fine all the time that session, but once it starts "blinking" monitor, it's doing it pretty much every time I switch tabs (I'll try to check if it's doing it during other actions, outside browser).

Ok, so it's not only when switching tabs and maximised, but also when browser in different size and when changing size, when closing tabs, when scrolling and it also happens on Chromium, so probably not a Vivaldi-related issue. However it looks like it doesn't happen when I don't do anything, so it might be related to change on the display. Dunno... Maybe I'll just reconnect the graphic card and try cleaning its slot. I'll check on other computers/displays later.

Run this in a terminal:

Code: Select all

# report-video

if it reports that the loaded driver is "intel", then there are things you can try...

Exit from the desktop to the commandline, and run:

Code: Select all

# xorgwizard

if it offers a choice of "sna" or "uxa" video acceleration, change it to "uxa".

If no joy, run xorgwizard and change to "modesetting" driver.

Exit from the desktop to the commandline, and run:

So glad we have these so called "AIs"... ;D

Code: Select all

Here's how to perform the task described on a Linux system:

1. Exit from the desktop to the command line:
Method 1 - Using keyboard shortcuts:
Press Ctrl + Alt + F1 (or F2, F3, etc., up to F6) to switch to one of the text terminals. These keys toggle between different virtual consoles.
Method 2 - Stopping the display manager:
If the above doesn't work, you can stop the service responsible for displaying the desktop. For example, for GDM (GNOME Display Manager), enter in a terminal:
bash
sudo systemctl stop gdm
(or lightdm, sddm, kdm, etc., depending on which display manager you're using.)

2. Log in to the console:
After switching to text mode, you'll see a login screen. Enter your username, followed by your password to log in. Note that the password won't be displayed as you type.

3. Run the command xorgwizard:
Once logged in, type:
bash
# xorgwizard

If xorgwizard requires administrative privileges (indicated by the # prefix), use sudo:
bash
sudo xorgwizard

Notes:
The # in commands suggests that the command should be run with administrative privileges. In most Linux systems, this means using sudo before the command.
If xorgwizard is a utility for configuring Xorg (the X Window System server), ensure you know what you're doing, as incorrect configuration can affect how your system handles graphics.
After finishing with xorgwizard, to return to the desktop, you can restart the display manager (e.g., sudo systemctl start gdm) or log out from the console and switch back to the graphical mode by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F7 (or F8, F9, etc., depending on your distribution and setup).

Remember, xorgwizard is not a standard tool in most Linux distributions; it might be specific to certain versions of EasyOS or another Puppy Linux-based system.

Does your old PC supports PCI Express 3.0?
How about the cards max. power consumption of 60W?

Reason I am asking - I'm using a msi GT 710 (PCI Express 2.0 / 19W) on my old 2010 PC using the same nouveau driver without any problem. Two HDMI screens connected to it.

Yes, @szept, this is what I am looking for.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express (Scroll down to 1/3 of the page.)
Your motherboard does not support PCI-E 3.0 . It's only a PCI-E 2.0 board.

I do have doubts that NVIDIA would throttle down a 'gamer graphics card' to be compatible to PCI-E 2.0 standards.
Hence timings might be a problem.

Hello @szept.

Would you mind to do some testing?
a) run 'glxgears' in the terminal
b) goto Menu ->System ->HardInfo and scroll down to 'Benchmarks' and do those tests one by one

Did everything went well?
If not goto Menu ->System ->Wcpufreq and lower the CPU clock to the lowest possible value and run the above tests again

Hello @szept .

Thank you very much for doing all those success full tests.

On Monday I did some work on the internet with the vivaldi browser and 4 full screen tabs opened up. After about an hour later I decided to grab me a cup of coffee. When I returned with it the screen had left the xserver - reason unknown.

Hmm!

With Vivaldi I also have another problem - it stopped syncing tabs...
I have only just started using sync and I liked it, and it's not working - what a cruel world ;)
