Just updated 6.6 to 6.6.1. All went well and working nicely. I have fairly good internet, with 180 Mb download speed, so updates go fairly quickly. It just struck me how fast this update went. Unfortunately I didn't time it, but was well under 2 minutes from clicking the update icon to being rebooted into the working EasyOS 6.6.1. Considering the update included a kernel bump to 6.12.12, so it is impressive. Thank you Barry for your continued development of EasyOS.

There is no error message if the hdparm in EasyOS is used (version v9.65)

I have compiled hdparm 9.65 statically-linked, now in the initrd. See blog report:

I am planning to go back to the 6.6 kernel.

Various reasons:
I have got it working on my Zenbook, both video and audio, which takes the pressure off forcing update the kernel.
Keep legacy audio drivers, for out-of-the-box working audio on older computers.

Blog report:

https://bkhome.org/news/202502/linux-66 ... piled.html

My Zenbook S13 2024-edition has a Meteor Lake CPU/GPU and I know that later kernels have improvements for Meteor Lake.
However, it is running fine on the 6.6.75 kernel.
Actually, what I did was use the 'config' file from the 6.12.12 kernel compile, which has enabled all the right things -- also carefully went through and re-enabled all the legacy audio drivers -- was surprised how many of them have been removed in 6.12 kernel. When I say "audio drivers". it looks like a lot of audio fixups for specific boards and Intel CPU-series that got taken out in 6.12.

I was quite surprised when booted up with 6.6.75 on the Zenbook and audio worked.

System not booting any more after update

Post by Federico »

Hello Barry!
I just updated from v 6.5.4 to v 6.6.1 on my private laptop (it's also an Asus Zenbook, but older, based on the Intel Tiger Lake architecture), using the update icon on the desktop as usual.
After the update the X-Server does not start any more. It looks like the Intel video driver cannot load because of some syntax-error on the script /etc/profile.d/vte.csh.

The full text of the error follows:

Code: Select all

-sh: /etc/profile.d/vte.csh: Zeile 19: Syntaxfehler beim unerwarteten Symbol >> ! <<
-sh: /etc/profile.d/vte.csh: Zeile 19: `if ( ! $?prompt | $?tcsh | ! $?TERM | ! $VTE_VERSION ) exit'
Waiting for kernel video drivers to load:

Xorg Wizard Automatic has just run.
If you are reading this, then you are at the console without X running
...
...

As always, I'm using the german locale. Would you (or anyone) give me some guidance to fix this if possible?
Thank you very much in advance!

Best Regards

That needs to be removed
But i don't see how that would stop Xorg from running.
Have you tried running xorgwizard?

System not booting any more after update

Post by Federico »

Thank you so much for the immediate answer!

Of course I tried. If I run xorgwizard the Intel driver is not listed at all, and the X-Server does also not run by selecting any other driver. If I reboot and select Options --> Fix broken video at the Limine boot screen, then the Intel driver is selectable, but the same error happens and the X-Server does not start and the cycle repeats.

Since I'm pretty much the only one using the german locale, the issue should be language-related imo.

I report my hardware once again:

Anyway, you can rollback to the previous version.

I will be uploading 6.6.2 very soon, which will be back on the 6.6.x kernel, specifically 6.6.75.

You already had a such errot with vte.csh (viewtopic.php?p=131363#p131363)

Here the most likely is that the problem comes from the kernel (see : https://bkhome.org/news/202502/intel-so ... ature.html)

You could try looking in the output of dmesg

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep missing
dmesg | grep module
lsmod

FWIW

Just for curiosity I installed Easy OS Scarthgap version 6.6.1 onto an internal mechanical hard drive and I no longer have the error I posted a screenshot of in an earlier post. (post #19)

So maybe it only affects SSDs and USB flash drives.

System not booting after update

@ Caramel

I don't know how you can know me better than myself! Yes, you are right I think I left that file there when I was messing up because of problems launching AnyDesk. Anyway, that shouldn't be the cause of the problem, but if you remind me of how to save the session from the command-line I'll try to rename or remove it.

Output of the suggested commands:

Code: Select all

# dmesg | grep missing
# dmesg | grep module
[ 1.022708] brd: module loaded
[ 1.023031] loop: module loaded

@ Barry, @ Everyone

Is it really possible to roll back from command line without loosing data? I have so many settings that, if I have to redo everything from scratch I prefer to switch to Daedalus. But, if this is the situation I honestly can't believe it. I'm going to try the stick on other hardware first, in order to assess that the issue is driver related. Reporting back soon.

System not booting after update

Post by Federico »

So, I tried it on my desktop (see configuration below) and I loose the image (screen goes black) after the X server starts. This must be due to the fact that I couldn't install the new version of the Nvidia SFS jet. I can however type the combination Ctrl+Alt+F2 to exit the X server and go back to the command prompt. This proofs that the X server is being started, even though I don't get any image (must be due to some monitor settings - using a 55'' TV -).
I also have another laptop, but another version of Scarthgap is already installed directly on its SSD. It doesn't look to be possible to run Scarthgap from a USB stick if another installation of it is already present on the internal drive.

So, the issue should be due either to the kernel 6.12.12 or to the new Intel drivers. The last resort is maybe a fix of the stick by connecting it to a system on which EasyOS is already running. May it be possible to surgically replace the video driver?

Thank you everyone in advance for any help.

A method I think without risk if you rollback just after an update (no installation or modification of programs) is to simply replace (in /mnt/wkg, the directory where easy is installed, usually /easyos) intrid and vmlinuz with the previous versions (that are in /mnt/wkg/releases/easy-6.5.4 in your case)(Copy the files , not move them)
I have tested.

@ Caramel

Thanks so much Caramel!
I will try this on saturday.

Maybe the reason why it does not start from USB on my other laptop with EasyOS already installed on its SSD is that originally I cloned the system from this stick so, even though the 2 systems have followed different usage / update paths, they still have the partitions with identical UUIDS and this is usually source of issues. Basically, when I start it from the other laptop it says that it doesn't find the file easy.sfs (I still cannot say why with absolute certainty).

As you have recent changes that you don't want to risk losing, it is a good practice to always take a snapshot before updating.

That makes it easy to rollback to the previous version. Do it from the "Rollback to previous version" in the menu in the initrd.
This will rollback to the last snapshot of the previous version.

@Federico
There is a trick that you can try, well, I'm confident this will work...

You will see a file /mnt/${WKG_DEV}/${WKG_DIR}releases/6.6.1/rw-6.6.1.sfs

This snapshot is taken at the update from 6.5.4 to 6.6.1, but it is actually the full snapshot just before updating.

So, copy that rw-6.6.1.sfs to /mnt/${WKG_DEV}/${WKG_DIR}releases/6.5.4/
and give it a different name, like this: rw-202502050000.sfs

...that date has to be the latest snapshot, if there are others in 6.5.4 folder.
The format is YYYY MM DD HH MM

Then create an entry in /mnt/${WKG_DEV}/${WKG_DIR}releases/6.5.4/snapshot-comments:

Code: Select all

202502050000 last snapshot before update from 6.5.4

...you can do the above from any other working EasyOS or Puppy.

Then bootup and in the initrd menu, choose "Rollback to previous version"

EDIT:
Then, if you are back to a working system, get rid of the 6.6.1 update, delete this folder:

/mnt/${WKG_DEV}/${WKG_DIR}releases/6.6.1

Then when you update to 6.6.2, if it is not working, the previous version will be 6.5.4 and you will be able to roll back to it.

FWIW

Just for curiosity I installed Easy OS Scarthgap version 6.6.1 onto an internal mechanical hard drive and I no longer have the error I posted a screenshot of in an earlier post. (post #19)

So maybe it only affects SSDs and USB flash drives.

EasyOS Scarthgap-series version 6.6.2 released.

Blog announcement:

https://bkhome.org/news/202502/easyos-s ... eased.html

@BarryK
If I have a current working 6.6.1 version installed to my internal mechanical hard drive is there any reason to update / upgrade to the 6.6.2 version.

Thanks

The main thing in 6.6.2 is the kernel rolled back and improved TRIM support detection.
But if 6.6.1 is working for you, and installed to a HDD which doesn't require TRIM, then no real need to update.

SOLVED - System not booting after update

Post by Federico »

@ all

So, the problem is now solved. The way I fixed my situation is as follows: I remembered that I also have jet another system to try to run the stick on: it's an old desktop running a 5th gen Intel Core CPU and DDR 3 memory. I tried and it booted fine. So, from there I updated again from the 6.6.1 to the 6.6.2 using the desktop icon again. Once the update was finished I restarted the system saving the session and shut down the system. Finally, reconnected the stick to my Asus Zenbook UX325E and it worked fine. This is the final proof that it was either a kernel or a driver issue.

Regarding the KDE apps (Dolphin, Okular, K-torrent)

I was used not having to do anything in order to keep on using the KDE apps after any system update, since we found the fix regarding the file located on the folder /etc/xdg/menus/.
This time instead I had to manually uninstall and reinstall the package libqt5xml5_5.15.8+dfsg, otherwise all of the KDE apps did not work. It must be something similar to the old issue: most probably the system update overwrites or removes one or more file(s) which belong to the foreign package libqt5xml5_5.15.8+dfsg.

@ BarryK

Dear Barry, thank you so much for all the useful advices. I'm used to always save the whole content of this stick as an img file before any update, but this time I read somewhere that you had also bought an Asus Zenbook for yourself, for testing new kernel and new drivers on it, so I was quite confident that I wouldn't have had problems. But it looks like the new kernel has jet more problems on this video chip than the older one instead. I also report that the microphone still does not work on EasyOS 6.6.2 with kernel 6.6.75, so I cannot still use this system for video conferencing if needed. All the rest of the system seems to work perfectly fine.

Did you search for missing audio firmware?

Code: Select all

# dmesg > dmesg.log
# geany dmesg.log

So, first of all:

What about the pulseaudio mixer?
Right-click on audio tray icon, choose "Mixer..."

Look in "Input devices" tab, it should show your microphone.
A common problem is it is muted, need to press the unmute button.

Regarding the above discussion about what to do if the version update is broken.

In Federico's case, updating from Easy 6.5.4 to 6.6.1

I have now made it easier to rollback:

https://bkhome.org/news/202502/rollback ... pdate.html

This feature will be in the next release of Easy, though if you know how to open up and edit initrd, you can make the change.

So if Federico rolls back to 6.5.4, everything should be good again.
Knowing that 6.6.1 is bad, it could be deleted. Delete this folder:

/mnt/wkg/releases/easy-6.6.1

...in fact, recommend do that, in case the next update is also bad, then you can rollback to the previous version which will be 6.5.4

Of course it isn't muted. I think I do use the mixer as it should be.

I have Scarthgap also on my business laptop (it's a HP 17-cp028lng) and I do use it for video conferencing without problems. Normally I keep the mic muted: I only activate it when needed.

EasyOS Scarthgap-series version 6.6.2 released.

Blog announcement:

https://bkhome.org/news/202502/easyos-s ... eased.html

Even though I've got a good working version of 6.6.1 Scarthgap installed to an internal HDD I decided to down load and install 6.6.2 Scarthgap version to a PNY 16gb 2.0 USB stick.

So far all that I've used works well and none of the previous errors. :thumbup2:

Thanks for all of your work @BarryK. :thumbup2: :thumbup2: :thumbup2:

@BarryK and all ,

To follow the pace , updating to 6.6.2 , but kernel 6.12.12 was all ok here on this i5-6200u .
Only hickup i got with easy-update , is power failure while updating , which ,here , did happend to me many times (again this last one ,my bad) ,
resulting in incompleted image and problem ,usualy hints + warnings by easy-update (or on kernel reboot )are all there
to fix those , so , not a problem , just an observation ,+ one reason for newbies to study and learn
basics of easyos about "repairing manually" a broken update , here , always frugal install, loving it .

More rounds of applauses BK for easyos , for those so well documented EasyOs !!!

@ tammi806, Vverve and all

To be precise, the 6.6.1 is not bad: it may only give problems on specific hardware, namely recent Intel video chips.
