Re: Vanilla Dpup 11.0.x Development Builds
11.0.125 is currently broken. I know how to fix it and I will re-trigger the job when the fix is ready. As usual, the changelog (and the actual changes) can be found at https://github.com/vanilla-dpup/woof-CE ... up-11.0.x/, but it also bumps the kernel to 6.12.x.

@dimkr
Speedy recovery! Take your time to get back in the game
Re: Vanilla Dpup 11.0.x Development Builds
I upgraded my 11.0.200 installation to 11.0.206. So far running nicely including the kernel upgrade to 6.12.5. A screenshot of my install running.

Wish you the very best for a quick recovery!
Having to get a hip replacement a few years ago.
I can tell you for sure, the best thing to do, is get out of bed, and move around, as soon as you can.
Even if it hurts to move.
I was walking to the bathroom, 2 hours after the operation, and it did hurt to walk, but not as bad as before the operation.
But just getting out of bed and moving was a big help to quickly feeling much better.
Had to pass a test on getting in and out of a automobile by myself.
Went home the next day, when they got tired of watching me go down the hall saying "I am coming, be there soon, wait for me, almost there", and going to the bathroom.
The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected

Thanks everyone, recovery is going very well. Luckily for me it's a sinus surgery and not hip replacement

Upgraded from dpup 200. Same save folder.
Did a bit of testing on everything. Everything working as expected. All my file opened and I had sound in everything I tried.
Question. Is the ad blocker on by default?
Note: Hardinfo is still in the menu.
The above is my own creation.
I just remembered you replaced hardinfo with fastfetch. I started fastfetch from the terminal. Looking forward to playing around with it and making different configs. I have read it can do quite a lot.

Re: Vanilla Dpup 11.0.x Development Builds
I wish vanilla dpup OS image (11.x and, if possible, 10.x) would include some useful software out of the box/image.
The criteria would be that they have small footprint (size, dependencies), common usage and/or essential in same critical scenario.
Examples are, but not limited to:
- p7zip-full , as 7zip archives are rather common nowadays
- small useful forensic/recovery utilities, first and foremost TestDisk/PhotoRec .
At the present I always install p7zip-full package and I carry with me into my usb stick the TestDisk tarball.
I am sure there are around similar useful software (small footprint, useful terminal programs for recovery-rescue-forensic) that could be taken into consideration(?) , such as chntpw
I find both useful and gratifying carrying around my favorite puppy ISO that can also be used as rescue and recovery toolbox too, a bit like SystemRescue.
Thank you anyway @dimkr for developing my current and favorite operating system since I started using Linux back in 2005.

Re: Vanilla Dpup 11.0.x Development Builds
Just setup dpup 11.0.212
Just 2 notes.
1 In my test version when the screen saver kicked in I couldn't get out. It didn't seem like it was frozen just stuck. That may be because this is a low memory machine and I was testing my setup script. I haven't had a problem when using a save folder.
2 In my daily driver I used the old save folder. I noticed in the menu under System I still have Hardinfo and don't have Fastfetch. I know this was not the case in testing. So there may be some odd glitches using a old save folder.

Re: Vanilla Dpup 11.0.x Development Builds
@dimkr I am back on 11.0.206 for a bit as 11.0.212 went into screen saver and I couldn't get it to wake up until I pressed the power button. It did the same thing yesterday when I was testing it with no save folder.
It is acing like I'm not pressing any keys or moving the mouse.

Re: Vanilla Dpup 11.0.x Development Builds
I understand that vanilladpup is now defaults to login as user spot.
I looked around and could not find a way to login as root.
I was wondering what needs to be changed to be able to login as user root or at least as a new user with root privileges so it will resemble a bit the traditional puppy user experience.
Thx

Currently, there's no such option, and it requires very extensive changes to allow this.

Re: Vanilla Dpup 11.0.x Development Builds
I am back on dpup 11.0.212. I tried to troubleshoot the issue with the screen saver. However I has not luck. It seems the issue may be with labwc. I read online a few posts about this same issue. I checked everything I could think of and the only difference was labwc version moved from 0.7.4 in 11.0.206 to 0.8.2 in 11.0.212.
In testing I ran my small script as root and it broke the screen saver. So I thought I had it figured. However when I ran the script line by line by copying them into the command line I had no problems. So for now I'm disabling the screen saver. I can use the lock screen or just turn the monitor off. I tested both with no issues.

You might want to reconsider.
Puppy started its life as root so the users can avoid to keep typing their password to do anything. And with this puppy they are forced to do it!
I can appreciate that is a security concern, but in an era that your phone can be detonated remotely, the inability to login with root privileges, looks like on overkill (no pun intended)

I understand your point of view. I had the same thoughts when the changes were first made. However to the truth after using it for several months now. I don't miss running as root at all. I mostly only use root during the original setup. After that I only need it to mount my data dive or do a in session save. TBO it's not really a issue for me anymore. Maybe that's just me.

Re: Vanilla Dpup 11.0.x Development Builds
Running applications as root requires so many hacks and workarounds, many applications depend on a session bus (something root doesn't have) and some simply refuse to run a root (forcing you to run some applications as a different user and constantly fix file permissions and ownership).
Running a an unprivileged user is more secure (harder to make mistakes that results in data loss or a broken OS) and gives a more cohesive experience (all applications run as one user) where things 'simply work' when they make assumptions that are true in any distro except Puppy.
I understand your point of view but it needs adjustment for 2025: most Wayland composites, Flatpak applications and web browsers don't want to run as root. While it's possible, it's far from ideal.
