BookwormPup64 10.0.9 nkb

Post by ozsouth »

With radky's permission, I made an updated BookwormPup64-10.0.9, instead of the usual CD version.
It has a newer kernel branch & an fdrv with extra iwlwifi firmware. Compression is also higher.
Named BookwormPup64_10.0.9_nkb (newer kernel branch), for iso, sfs's, configs & DISTRO_SPECS entries.
Can't mix this & radky's pup's sfs's.
Did some basic testing - ok. Use at own risk.

v2 iso released 4/1/2025 (676mb - has Debian config 6.12.7 kernel).

If you have v1, can download delta v1 to v2 (64mb). To make v2 from that, place v1 iso & delta in an empty folder & click on delta in Filemanager. v2 iso will soon be created. Note filenames are the same in both versions, but have different dates. vmlinuz & zdrv are the only changed files.

Delta v1 to v2: https://www.mediafire.com/file/dnc2mrjf ... delta/file

v2 iso: https://www.mediafire.com/file/tvcmyx5u ... 2.iso/file

For compiling, need my kernel sources (& maybe headers) from forum Kernels section. Also need devx
below, which must be in the same folder as puppy...sfs so as to load on boot.

Devx here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/7rcgltwp ... b.sfs/file

Hello @ozsouth

Is this a remaster or is this a WoofCE build for a "nkb"?

Curious

@Clarity - radky wanted me to diffferentiate names, as well as my changes to kernel, firmware & compression, but essentially is his woofce build. I edited DISTRO_SPECS & boot configs minimally.

Thanks @ozsouth

So this is a WoofCE build using @radky's build recipes. Similar to @peebee's approach for BKWP64. Your creates has later kernel and additional Wifi needs.
Edit: This is not a WoofCE build of the build used for v1009. It is a remaster of BKWP64 v1009

Will test ISO file booting as soon as I can clear my plate

Excellent Pup Ozsouth!!

Nice to have it fit on CD.
I just tried it booting as frugal from HDD, and also booting from CD and perfect each time.
Decided that my usual CD-R rated at "74min/650MB" was probably not quite big enough so used a Verbatim "80min/700MB" and works fine. (Posting from it now)

Looks like a very full featured Pup.

- Great to see both Connman and SNS available.
- Nice to have choice of Firefox as root or spot direct from the menu.

Only niggles so far:
- If I try to "insert symbol" from Abiword I get small squares with ascill code in it - rather than the usual character. Possibly missing font?
- Have not been able to get GTK radio working. Just says "stopped". (I have no prior experience with this so may be doing something wrong...)

Will keep testing. This looks like a great pup.

(So far only tested on Tosh Satellite Pro S500 with 3GB ram. Will try on some other machines)

@ozsouth please accept my apology!!!

I noticed on the 'official' BKWP64 thread, that you have already indicated this "nkb" is a remater.

I missed that post before I raised the question on this thread.

Sorry

It works great on my new laptop since it is using kernel 6.10.14 like I would think.
Thanks for releasing this.

@ozsouth my headset wouldn't work with BW10.0.9 but with your updated kernel works perfectly, thanks.

I just noticed something peculiar in block devices:
For BookwormPup64_10.0.9_nkb I see:

Code: Select all

# lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS
loop0 7:0 0 398M 1 loop /initrd/pup_ro2
loop1 7:1 0 100M 1 loop /initrd/pup_f
loop2 7:2 0 36.2M 1 loop /initrd/pup_z
loop3 7:3 0 9.2M 1 loop /initrd/pup_b
loop4 7:4 0 73.6M 1 loop /initrd/pup_a
sda 8:0 0 15G 0 disk
└─sda1 8:1 0 15G 0 part

nbd5 43:160 0 0B 0 disk
nbd6 43:192 0 0B 0 disk
nbd7 43:224 0 0B 0 disk
zram0 250:0 0 1.9G 0 disk [SWAP]
nbd8 43:256 0 0B 0 disk
nbd9 43:288 0 0B 0 disk
nbd10 43:320 0 0B 0 disk

nbd14 43:448 0 0B 0 disk
nbd15 43:480 0 0B 0 disk
#

Doing the same with BookwormPup64_10.0.9 I get no nbd devices:

Code: Select all

# lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS
loop0 7:0 0 446.2M 1 loop /initrd/pup_ro2
loop1 7:1 0 15.1M 1 loop /initrd/pup_k
loop2 7:2 0 109.3M 1 loop /initrd/pup_f
loop3 7:3 0 71.6M 1 loop /initrd/pup_z
loop4 7:4 0 10.2M 1 loop /initrd/pup_b
loop5 7:5 0 81.8M 1 loop /initrd/pup_a
sda 8:0 0 15G 0 disk
└─sda1 8:1 0 15G 0 part
sr0 11:0 1 776M 0 rom
zram0 254:0 0 1.9G 0 disk [SWAP]
#

What are all those nbd devices?
Should they be of concerned or just need to be cleaned up?

Thanks

@JusGellin - These look like network block devices.

Network block devices (NBD) are used to access remote storage device that does not physically reside in the local machine. Using Network Block Device, we can access and use the remote storage devices.

The original kernel (& my recent Debian config kernels) have CONFIG_BLK_DEV_NBD as a module whereas in 6.10.14 I had it as a builtin.
As the device(s) not present, you can ignore it, or swap to my 6.12.7 kernel.

BookwormPup64 10.0.9 nkb v2

v2 iso & delta released (has 6.12.7 kernel, as I feel Debian config kernel highly desirable). See first post.

@ozsouth
When I upgraded, I found I couldn't just replace the sfs files and vmlinuz and initrd.gz on the old version.
When I did, it wouldn't boot up.
I ended up doing a new frugal install and copying the save folder over to it.
When that was done, it asked if I wanted to upgrade, which I did.

@JusGellin - glad that worked. When you change kernels these days, if there is a file named ...initmodules.txt, it must be deleted before booting into new kernel, otherwise failure is quite possible. Also, your old save file will (probably still) need /usr/lib/modules/6.10.14... folder deleted, as well as /boot/config-6.10.14... , as they relate to previous kernel.

I just used the full iso to install it fresh and then copied the old upper_changes folder to it to make it work like before.

I just upgraded to BW 10.0.9_nkb and copied my existing save folder from BW 10.0.6 over.
It seems to have allowed the conversion when I did this except my Thunderbird Portable doesn't run.

Clicking directly where the app (usr/share/applications) is gives this error:
"Failed to execute child process "usr/bin/thunderbird" (No such file or directory)"

How can I fix this?

Thanks

In my topic on using the old save.

But does not say what he had to do to link them in.

If the portable has in it the MenuAdd script file.

Run that and see if it now works.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

This is not what I expected :o

I think the actual Thunderbird portable is missing.

If I go to /user/share/applications/thunderbird-portable.desktop
Left click gives the error: Failed to execute child process "usr/bin/thunderbird" (No such file or directory)

Then right click to get text gives Exec=/usr/bin/thunderbird
Going to /usr/bin/thunderbird shows a bad link.

Thanks

Back when I knew a lot less than I do now, it looks like I installed the thunderbird portable on my shared drive and linked to that instead.
I don't think I did it properly so that's why is doesn't work on this.

How should I install the Thunderbird portable on my main internal drive and also access it from the menu?

Thanks

I have noticed the same thing recently. Don't know if it is an issue with Mediafire or just the internet in general -
I also see a message from mediafire about "click to repair download" which makes me wonder if mediafire is trying to scare people into going to premium accounts or something.

When I try to download an iso I find that the iso appears in my download directory (iso name appears complete and looks ready) - but it is actually incomplete (as in - still downloading slowly even though the filename looks complete and appears to have finished).

I seem to remember in the old days I would see something like "bookworm.iso.part" which would be the clue that downloading is still in progress but now the ".part" is missing. It actually let's me click and mount the iso - even though downloading is incomplete. (Messed up my frugal copy doing this).

I am assuming my browser is potentially at fault (It's an older one) but yes, i definitely see that recent downloads seem slower.

@greengeek - check your pm's - testing mega.nz
My isos get downloaded a lot - mediafire may not be entirely happy with that.

I figured out what to do.
I placed the Thunderbird Portable at /mnt/home and opened up the folder.
There was a MenuAdd to link it to the menu.
