"Headphone" jack: no sound (SOLVED)

Post by Subito Piano »

Hi!

First, I must have blinked!! Fossapup is now considered "legacy" -- ?!??!?! Who'da thunk it? And the the rearranged Board Index and sub-indices all laid out as they now are -- KUDOS to those who took a LOT of time to reorganize. Nice.

That said, I hope someone can give me a few ideas here. (I DO have a backup but I'd rather fix this issue than go that route just yet.) All worked fine in the sound system, but all of a sudden I have sound only through the laptop speakers, but nothing goes out the output (headphone) jack. It doesn't matter if its Deadbeef, VLC, or a music website. Of course, I tried adjusting the settings in alsamixer, but to no avail. There is only one sound card in the unit, I didn't mess around with my settings, it just stopped sending a signal out that jack. IF I boot up in RAM mode (pfix=ram), sound DOES work through both the system speakers and output jack. I looked in my .config folder and tried renaming some sound-related files (better than deleting them but has the same effect) -- nothing worked there. I have NOT uninstalled and reinstalled alsamixer, I can if that's advisable; I just don't want to make the situation worse! I do NOT have pulseaudio, although I find there are some pulse libs and related files when I search for them.

FYI: machine is a Dell Latitude E7270 running FossaPup64.

Anywho -- thoughts very much appreciated!

I had that happen on a DELL Optiplex 980 desktop machine. Audio card pre-amp failure caused the head phone jack to stop working.

Audio was on the motherboard.

When you boot "to RAM", are you offered to save your session? You could try booting to RAM, then make modifications to your settings,
install applications, etc., then when you shut down make an entirely new save. It might be a tedious task to mount your current save
and in another file manager window mount the new one and search for something turning off the headphone jack, but I suppose it
could be done??? Does your FossaPup contain Retrovol? If so, might check if it is set to allow output through the headphone jack.

Fossapup64 9.5 - PhilB's original - does have Retrovol. But what gets me is that the OP says output through the jack works fine in a "vanilla" Live session.....only going to pot when using the 'save'.

This, to me, indicates the OP has inadvertently done something themselves to cause this.....yes?

I could be barking up the wrong tree, but it's likely not so far off the truth. Myself, I switched to always running external audio through USB headphones and speakers quite some time ago.....it simplifies matters, because USB audio devices, in my experience, always seem to come with their own, built-in sound cards. Which also makes selecting an output device an absolute breeze...

Mike. ;)

Yeah...

Rockedge, as mentioned, it works on a pristine RAM session, so it's not the hardware (thankfully!!!)

Wiz57 -- Yes, as mentioned, I have a PupSave backup, only done a couple months ago, it would require only a few tweaks (hopefully) , but I'm trying to avoid even that. My FossaPup is heavily modified (i.e., many programs, and personalized settings), but not that many since backup.

MikeWalsh -- yeah, I brought a USB adapter with me today. I pirated it from my old warhorse of a laptop (2007 T60) -- mostly used for the home stereo system. THAT unit did have a hardware failure, but not this one.

If worse come to worst, I'll load up my backup PupSave folder and see how much tweaking it will need, likely not much. If so, and after a week or to of using/tesing it, I can delete my current PupSave file.

Thank you all -- further ruminations are most welcome....

OK, the USB headphone adapter is recognized but not working -- when I choose the adapter as the sound card, it still only comes through the speakers (same if running in RAM). Yiii....

UPDATE -- cause found but not fixed - ! I ifgured out that I had installed AutoKey and AutoKet-QT just before the problem occurred. So as a test, I booted up a "vanilla" FossaPup and as soon as Iinstalled those program, I lost my headphones. Maybe that nasty python???? However, uninstalling them worked running from RAM but NOT in my own installation -- even after removing AutoKey and the QT GUI and rebooting, I still have the same issue. Yii....

I looked in my .config folder and tried renaming some sound-related files (better than deleting them)

You said you did this.

Maybe this is why it still does not work.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Boy, I wish I wuz smarter...

Bigpup: I tried your suggestion, but to no avail. Those files, if they were the issue, would have been messed up and causing the issue -- that's why I eliminated them. That said, I tried your suggestion anyway, but no go.

SOOO -- I added a two-month old backup pupsave file and booted into it. Without adding autokey, I had no sound coming out of an external speaker -- !?!??! Pulling on the jack, voila! -- sound came through the speaker!!! Long story short, I experimented a little, then finally booted up into my regular, original pupsave file, reinstalled autokey & autokey-QT, and I've got sound.

OK - it IS a hardware issue of some sort --- but it still makes no sense, seeing as I DID get speaker sound from loading a vanilla FossaPup the other day. Maybe I bumped the plug at just the right moment -- but it always worked with no fuss before.

At any rate, I now have sound coming out the headphone jack -- as long as I pull the plug out ≈1/16".

Boy, I wish I wuz smarter...

I have a headphone plug with the same issue.

The plug end has to be just right in the connection port.

I wonder if all plug ends are exactly the same length and exact contacts locations.

They are suppose to be.
