I have not tried Midori, so probably won't be of much help. But, did you download the latest version 11.5 as of 18 Jan 2025?
Here's a direct link to the i686 32bit version https://github.com/goastian/midori-desk ... 86.tar.bz2 in case it's needed.
Now to troubleshoot...using your file manager (Rox), navigate to the folder you unzipped the tar.bz2 file into, then "right click" and
choose to open terminal there. In the terminal, try typing midori, press enter, make note of any errors. Post any errors here and
maybe we'll be able to find a solution.

OK, navigate inside that midori directory - then repeat the terminal command as before.

No idea why midori isn't working for mmmrr, but curious whether anyone else has installed the latest version, 11.5, and had
issues similar to me where it was eating my RAM, necessitating a restart, then when that repeated, reversion to the
previous release?

You did correct, I got "Illegal instruction" too with the new version 11.5, the older version 11.4.3 works ok for me.

@fredx181 :-

Aye, same here Fred. I updated, oh.....maybe 10 days ago? Straight away the "illegal instruction" thing came up.

Haven't used it since. I'm "waiting on developments".....to see what happens, like.

In MY case, it's not like it's the ONLY option open to me. I have at least a dozen other browsers I can use. But it's a puzzling one, nonetheless....

We'll see.

Mike. ;)

Yes, the developer(s) did their best with every new version to improve the browser in advanced ways, but seem to have forgotten sometimes about the most basic thing: That it runs !

Re: Midori Browser with Gecko

Post by mmmrr »

hi muggins,
thanks for the tip about basilisk.
it has passed first hurdle: opening
the midori 11.4.3 asset list so i can
d/l the 32 bit version.

both seamonkey and light paused
with spinning wheels at the asset link.

question: how does an Appimage work?
an item on the midori asset list was one ,
without reference to a 64 bit build, also
2 other items on the asset list puzzled me:
both ended 'astian.txz'. one had no "64" bit
designation.

i know those questions are outside topic but
maybe i can get more useful answers more
quickly here.

now to try midori 11.4.3. thank you all.
cheers, mm

edit1--when midori 11.4.3 opened i searched
'astian.txz'. i gather that astian is free-standing
info sharing/synchronizing entity. i assume it
can be pre-loaded in some midori versions.

hello all,
it looks like midori 11.4.3
has updated itself to 11.5.x
it ran well but now won't start.
there is a lot of entries in the
update log
can it be rolled back to 11.4.3.
fortunately, balisk is working.
cheers, mm

Mmm.. yes, the terrible automatic updating, I'm afraid that you'll have to start all over by deleting the midori folder and extracting 11.4.3 version again.
Then, to prevent automatic updating, place "distribution" in the midori folder (Extract below and place 'distribution' folder in the midori folder):

distribution.tar.gz
Extract and place 'distribution' folder in the midori folder

thanks fredx181,
i still had the midori 11.4.3 tar.bz2
in my downloads folder. extracted
it into /opt. then extracted 'distribution'
into the fresh midori folder. starts &
restarts without a problem.
cheers, mm

Announcement for Midori 11.1.0

Approximately 11 days ago we launched Midori version 11, a version that marks a milestone in the development of Midori, which has always stood out for its lightness, speed security and respect for user privacy. Today 11 days after the publication we released Midori 11.1 with novelties that impact all our users and without a doubt it allows us to achieve one more degree of stability and functionality for all.

Astiango search engine as a predetermined search engine is stated
Support multi-language.
Fix of images and iconographia.
32bit architecture support for GNU/Linux & Microsoft Windows operating systems.
Improvement of multimedia files, improvements in video reproduction.
Improvements in the synchronization of tabs, history, markers, passwords etc with the Mozilla Account service.

News for GNU/Linux

Code: Select all

Thanks to Loc-OS we have deployed our own repository for debian/ubuntu distributions, in the Midori aid section in Spanish you can find the instructions add the repo and to update and install Midori from the repository. We have enabled the 32 -bit support for Deb, Ubuntu, MINT and this whole family distributions.
Puppy Linux He is the best friend of our Armadillo lizard (animal that represents Midori’s pet), and for him we have also extended the 32bit support, as well as offering an official package for the distribution of the puppy.[/quote]

Looks good so far. NLS not perfect yet, but after 11 days of version 11 release it is quite awesome to have language support.

One suggestion, if i may:
@josejp2424 please update link in first post.

One more thing would be to mention that there is a 32bit download link different from the pets download site (which is a little confusing, though 32bit is not downloadable as pet).
I didn't try the 32bit binary download, but if it is offered, i think it may be of interest for some other puppy users.

We have created a space theme for Puppy, each new version will be published here, We hope to continue improving the user experience and we must change the design a little to offer the distros we are thinking about and working on.

@tosim , I think the link doesn't work because puppylinux is not one of their objectives and they are not going to work for it again.

It is possible I am wrong, so I hope any midori/astian developer correct my suppossition.

Thanks, @ponchale , @nilsonmorales, @josejp2424 => ;)

Just thought I'd mention that, after finding the latest Midori release gobbled up my RAM, simply reverting to the previous release didn't solve this
issue. I had to delete /root/.midori, and the ./Midori/profile directory, then start afresh, and now it's behaving/

I don't think that's the case at all. The "named" distros on the download pop-up are major, mainstream releases anyway; I would have been extremely surprised to find a specific package just for Puppy, given how small & 'niche' our community is.

You would do the same as for the Firefox and/or Pale Moon downloads; grab the appropriate, 'generic' tar.bz2 package, extract it and just swap the firefox/palemoon/midori directory over with your existing one. I believe that's how many of us have been doing it for years; I know it's a wee bit more 'manual', but it's not like most Puppians can't unzip a tarball, is it? JakeSFR's UExtract makes doing this very easy, and it's a default component of all Puppies these days.

Anyway, it fits with Puppy's "hobbyist" label. You wouldn't expect click-to-install for everything.......would you? :o

@mikewalsh

Months ago, @ponchale and other puppy/midori users, presented it as the "Browser for puppy", and they defended puppy as one of her main objectives.

Puppy and Midori should run together... (this was the idea they try to transmit moths ago, but now, as I said, It doesn't look as one of their objectives)

.... when I have enough time, I'll try to find the posts I know talked about this...

https://astian.org/midori-en/midori-pup ... ch-other/

In the spanish version this idea is more emphasized:

https://astian.org/es/midori-es/midori- ... -es-mejor/

Gracias a josejp24

Translation:
The saying goes that together is better, but if we add "together and light" to that phrase, it would be perfect, just like the title of this post says. Puppy is a Linux distro with years in the market, one of the lightest but with all the power of Linux. Today, in an effort to extend the reach and horizons of Midori, we decided to take our little armadillo lizard to Puppy.

In the new beta version released today, Midori 10.0.4, we show and explain what the new features are.

We hope that Midori & Puppy will be the perfect pair: lightness, privacy, and speed.

There was one early version (11.1.3) that had .pet packages available for download (32-bit and 64-bit):
https://github.com/goastian/midori-desk ... ag/v11.1.3
But for later versions not anymore.
edit: I see now also for v11.2.2 (even a .xbps package) :

I would understand the possible reasoning of the Midori team: Puppy PPM is not longer dominant In Puppy design so making dotpet packages somewhat deprecated in favour of packaging such as apt and xbps. Debian based pups can now use apt, and these upstream package formats also work for DebianDogs and KL distros, meaning that Midori could become a good candidate for a lightweight forum-used browser more generally.
