Photo transfer - mobile to FossaPup.

Post by cobaka »

Hello all and "woof"
I have an android mobile - Motorola.

I wish to transfer photos from the phone to FossaPup.
I made the connection/transfer in the past, but not always.

The problem seems to lie with config. settings in both the PC and phone.

On the PC, I use: Menu Places (lwr LH screen) -> fileSystem -> PupMTP.

On the phone, in settings: (1) Show popup to choose desired mode (on)
(2) "USB controlled by: "connected device"
(3) Use USB for (a) File transfer or (b) USB tethering.

For (3) I use (a) - file transfer.
When I click (2) the phone reports: can't switch.
I believe (2) is the problem, but cannot understand the message, "cannot switch".

Any insights here?

Solution 1: Is your file transfer enabled?

Chances are there, that for various security reasons the file transfer of your Android smartphone is disabled. Before panicking, you need to check whether the file transfer is enabled or disabled in your Android smartphone.

If your file transfer is not working due to the disabled file transfer, you can check it by the following steps:

Go to ‘Setting’ > ‘Storage’ > USB Computer Connection > Media Device.

If there is no tick in front of the Media Device, tick the box in front of it. You can also check the Camera (PTP) option below the Media device but you have to uncheck it again. This might solve the Android file transfer not working problem.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Hello @cobaka

For the better part of over 15 years cell phones have had Wifi. For over a dozen years I have had motorola cell phones. For file movement I always use apps that have SAMBA clients for file exchanges. For over a dozen years, IIRC, PUPs have SAMBA built-in; thus you dont need to do anything to add this functionality as it have been there for many years. Many and most members of the forum know how to use this simple subsystem service as PUPPY has made this simple.

I haven't used a wire to a PC from a phone in these modern times. There is NO perceived benefit.

Fire up a phone app and transfer over Wifi the followings
files/photos/videos/audios/documents/spreadsheets/text-messages/emails/backups ... well you get the picture.

Enjoy as 2025 and the old modern times continue with us. Use your Wifi from anywhere in your house.

Hello @bigpup

I have good news and bad news!
The good news: I made the connection and transferred the files.
The bad news: I still don't understand the process - but the problem is clearly "mine" and I should find it and post a solution on the forum.

@Clarity Thanks for your tip.
I'll return to look at 'your' method after I uncover the method that worked successfully before.
Only one week ago I made a transfer, then changed "some setting".
I need to understand (at a deeper level) the messages on my mobile 'settings' page.

Thanks.

When you totally understand a cell phones settings, the OS will get an update, so you have to learn all over again!

I have had issues transferring files from my Nokia X30 (Android) mobile to PuppyOS as pupMTP does not bring up the camera files for whatever reason.
So I now turn on pure FTP on my PuppyOS, and use FTPCafe as the client on the mobile via my home network.
Works a treat !

. . . . . Photo transfer - g24 Motorola mobile to FossaPup HDD by USB cable.
. . . . . my method (after reading replies sent to me in this thread)

@Geek3579,

o-o-o
o-o-o
MY PROCEDURE
I rebooted Puppy Linux - Fossa Pup
then I rebooted my Motorola Android G24
(this may not be necessary - but I did it anyway.)

Looking at G24 "settings": I saw
- Connected devices (nil)

I plugged in the USB "C" cable
(on desktop) I saw PupCamera dialog box appear. (I ignored it)
Using Pup System Info - USB devices - I learn:
On Bus 02, device #4 I see a "product" - moto g24 is connected to desktop.

(on mobile) I set:
(charging = "on", meaning I CAN transfer files.)
(charging "off" == charging only. Confusing? I think so, but ...)

Use USB for:
File Transfer (not USB tethering)

USB controlled by:
Connected device selected (result -> could not switch).

(on desktop) menu -> file system -> Pupmount MTP device (see dialog box)

click "mount"
click "open" (see Rox File Manager)
here is a snapshot ...

Rox-File_Manager--store_0001.jpg
Rox-File_Manager--store_0001.jpg (12.04 KiB) Viewed 288 times

And when I click "store_0001" (ie a folder in the ROX Window) ...
I see "this" ....
Woof!

Rox--store_content.jpg

The photos are in the folder DCIM.
These folders appear on my desktop; but they are NOT "normal" files/folders.
I can move "photos" from the DCIM/Camera folder to folders in my desktop, but I cannot rename files in g 24.
Note: on g24 "USB preferences" "USB controlled by" "this device" (not "connected device")

Using this method I got access to the photos on my g24.
I found I could also see and transfer photos sent to me by WhatsApp. Use ROX file manager to find the WhatsApp directory in your mobile.
When my mobile is connected to my desktop the annoying dialog box (asking me to mount and open) stops popping up.

I hope the note helps others to transfer files from the mobile to desktop (or notebook).
