Yes, I do performance test using Hardinfo.
Seems 'maybe' your video card and the video subsystem struggle a bit.
Oh well, hardware differences may be why I dont have the same problem(s) you see.

Hi @rockedge (and friends),
Following from our discussion about fixing my Vassal implementation problem on this thread I'm trying to download the iso for F96-CE_4 so that I can try implementing Vassal on that distro.
Unfortunately every attempt to download it ends with a Secure Connection Failed error.
It doesn't matter which route I take to do that, whether from your webpage, from the ISO link or from the Puppy Linux home download page nor does it matter whether I use Firefox or Pale Moon to access the page.
So I'm rather stuck and will be grateful for any help you might offer.
Best regards, @ChrisH
@ChrisH
Try using Wget in terminal
Code: Select all
wget https://rockedge.org/kernels/data/ISO/F96-CE/F96-CE_4.iso

Try using Wget in terminal
Code: Select all
wget https://rockedge.org/kernels/data/ISO/F96-CE/F96-CE_4.iso
Using uGet, 8 secs download time with no problem.

So, wget worked and the iso was successfully downloaded as follows
Code: Select all
wget https://rockedge.org/kernels/data/ISO/F96-CE/F96-CE_4.iso
but the file failed with GtkHash using the hash file from https://rockedge.org/kernels/data/ISO/F ... _4-ISO.txt. So maybe I shouldn't trust it? Regards, ChrisH
@ChrisFH
I just downloaded a copy of F96-CE_4.iso from the same location and the ISO tested against the SHA1-MD5_F96-CE_4-ISO.txt values in gtkhash
successfully. The value for SHA1 match:
@rockedge , @Jasper , thanks. I've never been really sure of the purpose of the hash key. I have it in mind that it's to verify that the downloaded file has not been maliciously modified, though I don't remember where I first got that idea from. That's the reason why I wondered whether I should trust it. I'll try again. Best regards, @ChrisH
@rockedge , OK, it looks like I downloaded an out of date Hash key file. The file I used for my failed attempt came from this address https://rockedge.org/kernels/data/ISO/F ... 64_9.6.txt , which I must have picked up by mistake by copying the hash file link for the devx version instead of the https://rockedge.org/kernels/data/ISO/F ... _4-ISO.txt version . So I'm good to go now that the hash check shows green . Thanks everyone and best regards, @ChrisH
2 CDs in the bin with this. One with cdrecord speed=4 -multi F96-CE_4.iso, the other with xfburn. I can't say if it's the CDs (maybe) or the burner or the iso. Any info?
@oafunv
What exactly happens when you try to boot using one of these CD's?
You do what?
You see what?
Give specific details.
Information on what the computer is will help.
Make and model?
The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

This is not what I expected
What exactly happens when you try to boot using one of these CD's? nothing, cdrom makes noises and pc goes to next normal boot ie skips cd cos it failed to read it
You do what? nothing
You see what? black screen
I'm leaning towards CDs being bad because I could burn both CDs a second time.
@oafunv what should happen if the CD-ROM is burned correctly, is the system will boot and start up and a desktop will appear on the monitor.
Does sound like something went wrong during the first burn attempt. I had to burn a copy recently for a machine that had the hard drive replaced and was not partitioned and formatted yet. This worked for me but I had to go through several tries until I found a CD-ROM/DVD drive that would write (burn) still.
If you can still write data to a previously "burned" CD-ROM then nothing was written to the blank CD/DVD.
Can you in anyway burn F96-CE_4 again and check the disk's integrity after the burn process is finished?
@oafunv
Can you look at what is on the CD and tell us what is on it?
Should see a bunch of files:

What operating system are you using, to run a program in, to burn the ISO image to CD?

Hi @rockedge,
Yesterday I downloaded F-96_CE4 from https://rockedge.org/kernels/data/ISO/F96-CE/
Thank you for this direct download link.
This kind of link is easier to use with "wget -c". Thank you.
I am wondering how to write menu.lst entry of Grub4Dos for F-96_CE4.
I tried to mimic my working Fatdog entry:
title F96CE4 (sda2/F96CE4)
find --set-root --ignore-floppies /F96CE4/initrd
kernel /F96CE4/vmlinuz pmedia=atahd psubdir=F96CE4 pfix=fsck savefile=direct:device:sda2:/F96CE4/F96CE4save.ext4 video=SVIDEO-1:d
initrd /F96CE4/initrd
title Fatdog720 (sda2/fatdog720)
find --set-root --ignore-floppies /fatdog720/initrd
kernel /fatdog720/vmlinuz pmedia=atahd psubdir=fatdog720 pfix=fsck savefile=direct:device:sda2:/fatdog720/fd64save.ext4 video=SVIDEO-1:d
initrd /fatdog720/initrd
But it is now working.
Kindly suggest if I am doing something wrong.
I was able to solve it.
I did a silly mistake.
Instead of initrd.gz, I put initrd only.
Thank you so much.
Just tried FossaPup64 CE. I'm happy I've found a Puppy that will boot for me, since most won't, and the latest Bookworm64 doesn't either. Since I have limited time to work on these problems, I was elated to find a Puppy that just works ootb.
Thanks.
Easy OS Daedalus 6.5.1.1| FossaPup64-CE v.4
Hi could someone please explain what the differences are here
1. F96-CE_4.iso 538Mb
2. F96-CE_5-alpha4.iso 568Mb
3. F96-CE_5-alpha4.iso 662Mb
I realise
1. is F96 vers 4 and
2. is the alpha vers for F96-CE_5
3. i think is same as 2. with Rockledge's temp updates and some added stuff that he abandoned, i cant remember or find the links etc blah
I use 2. F96-CE_5-alpha4.iso 568Mb as my daily driver it works superbly and fast for me. The networking is rock solid, For some reason EasyOS has networking issues creates 2 partitions but only one boot 6Mb is visible from windows. No disrespect to Barry here.
Just seen this https://archive.org/download/puppy_linux_-fossapup64
where is all this from and is it safe?

Ally is the maintainer of archive.org. Along with other publications that have appeared on the internet, ally has been archiving Puppys and their applications perhaps since their inception. I've used the term publications because you may find on archive.org documents, videos, pretty much anything which can be published. It is as valuable a resource for things as Wikipedia is for information.
Naturally, it has come under attack by assholes. cf. viewtopic.php?p=138940#p138940
@bean
F96-CE_4 is the stable polished version. download is possible from here -> https://mega.nz/folder/j0JQ2RaZ#Uiw3eA8MBOhOxHnwxqRKNg
F96-CE_5 is the one I produced alpha versions of that reached F96-CE_5-alpha4 in an attempt to bring F96-CE as close to up to date that Ubuntu Focal Fossa can go. I have not worked on it much as of late since I started to use Noblepup64 more and more.
The F96-CE_5-alpha4 is solid enough to use regularly only it is not as outfitted with utilities as is F96-CE_4 and a bit less polished. Very fast reponsive OS on most machines.
There is a good ISO to download here -> https://mega.nz/folder/nwBlwYLQ#-pqgBV7Pu9sTQwae_rOe_A
Many of the ISO's located here -> https://archive.org/download/puppy_linux_-fossapup64 are the systems produced during the build process leading up to F96-CE_4. Which all are "Safe".
