Did you have to AGREE to a new PLDF Agreement, too?

Post by Clarity »

Today, I was asked to 'resign' a legal-ease webpage in order to become a contributor to this forum.

:?: This was unexpected and confusing. Was this action 'ANNOUNCED' somewhere before today. I combed the forum looking for answer of WHY this behavior has occurred??? :?:

Are any of YOU, other forum contributors, having the identical requirement over the past day(s)?

Curious

So I understand that all these rules are a "new dictatorship era", aren't they?

What do you think? The police of the internet? Do you think all these match with Linux Spirit?

Meanwhile I think my only contributions or questions will go to EasyOS subforum.

Have a nice day.

(It is possible comments about the puppy forum were real)

I saw it this morning.

Pretty standard stuff in it. There isn't anything that stamps out my freedoms in there. I took it as basically don't be a dick on the forum, and you can stay to play. If you want to talk about stuff that isn't nice, be it about others or illegal activities etc, then this isn't the place.

Nothing wrong with a rules reminder every now and again.

If anything, I reckon @rockedge should make everyone do the re-agree on Jan 1st every year.

Unrelated, I attempted to click @pp4mnklinux 's link above and distrowatch is giving me a 403 forbidden. Same for anyone else?

Hi,

This is a normal “Terms of Service Agreement” as it has to be signed in every forum and on many websites.

Only one difference: you cannot simply click a button WITHOUT actually having seen it (and possibly even having READ it) - as is often practiced.

PS: Some people need a reminder of what they have consented to.

peace

Yes...it was a surprise, but not a problem, it's just the usual 'reminder' that forums often put to their users... 8-)

This is what is required for me to avoid being left holding the bag. The notices are intended for new registrations and once agreed too do not appear again.

One can not register without having read the notices. It also cuts down on SPAM attacks.

One part of it is so you know there are cookies used. Because the forum uses Awesome fonts it is considered a 3rd party download. This makes that fact transparent.

There is a new section in the each user's UCP to download all of your own personal information that is stored on this server.

The notices and About Us are required by laws of the EU and USA.

We have been loose with regulations but these times demand that we are careful just enough.

It's not our fault.....blame your own governments

It can't be that hard.
Probably just posting the unthinkable wrong-think and the internet overlords would submit old rocketeer into canceling action.
If that doesn't work you have to bribe or blackmail your way out.

@Clarity :-

Nah, nothing to get "excited" about. And nothing "curious" about it, either.

Moderating on more than one forum as I do, I can confirm this is simply "cover your backside" type 'legalese'.....which any webmaster with any sense WILL periodically show & require re-consent to. Even the internet has laws these days, along with additional requirements from various geographical areas.....so it's pretty much standard across the board.

We're just keeping up with current requirements, mate. That's all there is to it. And just because you may have originally had to sign one when you first joined, is NO guarantee that you will never see it again. Laws change. Rules & regulations get updated. Consent HAS to be 're-authorised''.....etc, etc.

Welcome to the modern internet.

Mike. ;)

@MochiMoppel

It could be not the best solution, but it worked for me:

- Download csv file
- Upload it to https://www.convertcsv.com/csv-viewer-editor.htm
- Convert it
- Read it online or download and open with libre office

Hope it helps.

Have a nice day u all.

I tested it and I end up with a .csv type file. Which opens up in geany and Gnumeric on this machine.

Can you tell what type the file is after you download it?

It has a .csv extension, but it doesn't look like CSV. Gnumeric refuses to open it. Here the first part of the file:

Code: Select all

'post_id, topic_id, forum_id, poster_ip, post_time, post_subject, post_text
''129, 1, 2, 153.151.203.190, "Sun,20-07-12 14:13", "", "<r><ATTACHMENT filename=""mm.png"" index=""0""><s></e></ATTACHMENT></r>"

''992, 241, 127, 153.151.203.190, "Fri,20-07-24 09:53", "Re: Prosilver Dark Edition Testing", "<r>ne-blackgreen is nice. Please keep it as an option. @MochiMoppel we have direct contact with the developer of this extension, @Chris1278, and I will present this problem to him. Perhaps he'll address it in this thread!

seeing the <r> and <e> tags is a sign that the data extraction has an error. Those are custom html tags assigned in phpBB and shouldn't be in this output.

Wonder why in your case this occurred? Hopefully the developer can shed some light on this issue.

@rockedge Download of profile data works, only download of forum content doesn't. I wonder if CSV is a suitable format for forum content since posts may also contain commas.

Just an observation...once the noticed problems are solved, there should be some method of handling the members possible quotes of other members posts, if any.
Including the other members posts with the members downloaded data may be in violation of applicable laws.

@MochiMoppel
I also couldn't open it with Gnumeric. You are correct about the delimiters like commas.

This is what I get after I open it with the CVS convertor that @pp4mnklinux suggested:

You have to open it in UTF-8 format. Other formats don't work. I don't have Linux so I can't say anything about that, but OpenFFFICE (the calculator program) or Microsoft Excel work. You have to open it in UTF-8 format with a spreadsheet program.

Just had the 'terms and conditions' thing now...

I'm guessing there's something with the 'Internationalization' ... and (certainly in Oz,) there's a greater push for ISPs and 'others' to provide info to governments and 'others' about what is posted, who posts it, etc in the interests of 'security' (sic).

I think there's some guff happening with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, Europe) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA, USA), as well as recent changes to the Online Safety Act (Australia; something happened on 11 DEC 2024)... and there's a general heightened sense of 'I gotta protect my tail' going on...

...but I don't really know or anythin'...

<E></E><br/>

So I simply took this code and saved it as test.csv. Then I took my OpenOffice Calc program, i.e. the spreadsheet program, and opened it.

The result looks like this:

When I open such a file, I have to select it like this if it is not already set correctly:

I can't comment on the programs for Linux, but maybe it will help you.
