Bright&Tint - brightness & colour temperature adjustment in a simple-to-use, portable package...

Post by mikewalsh »

Morning, gang.

This was originally released in .pet format, back in the early days before @fredx181 released his immensely useful, self-extracting rshift-portable packages. I've re-hashed & re-packed it into my now standard 'portable' format.......along with a catchy new name!

Say hello to Bright&Tint-portable.

===============================

Brightness is adjusted via Puppy's built-in xrandr function. Colour temp is handled by the wee binary called 'sct'. The utility contains both 32- and 64-bit builds of this binary, and auto-detects the correct one to use when it fires up.

Sct's settings range from 10,000 - an intense blue-white - all the way down to about 1,000 - a very intense reddish hue. 6500 is accepted as the 'natural daylight' setting, so the colour temp slider tops out at this. 3500-4500 is an acceptable night-time setting, although you can of course set the slider wherever you want it! You don't HAVE to use the colour temp setting if you don't want to, neither; in this case, just ignore the 'Colour Temp' button, and simply use it as a brightness slider.

YAD-based GUIs are mostly courtesy of myself, with suggestions from Fred (YAD is also built-in). The coding is almost entirely down to Fred (with re-hashed bits of some of my earlier attempts)......to whom I owe huge 'thanks', as always. Cheers, Fred!

I've included a short video clip below on how to use it:-

Hopefully, this will make things a wee bit clearer. As I said in the video, some of you have already seen this.....but there again, many of our newer members will not have. Previously, when Fred & I first released this, it was installed as a standard .pet package. I've 'translated' & re-packed the thing into my by now standard 'portable' format, just to make things more flexible for y'all.

========================

As always:-

  • Download it

  • Unzip it (I prefer JakeSFR's UExtract for this)

  • Move the portable directory itself anywhere you want (preferably outside the 'save'; makes sharing between Puppies a lot simpler)

  • Since it's a ROX-app, just click on the thing to launch it (you can drag it onto the desktop as a launcher, if you want)

The usual MenuEntry scripts are included. As it's a ROX-app, access these via rt-clk -> Look inside... Please read the 'MenuReadMe' FIRST if you've added a Menu entry and wish to move the utility to a different location.

Also included are 'TrayAdd' and 'TrayRemove' scripts, for those who may wish to have an executable icon in the notification area instead of a Menu entry. Or you could have both! It's entirely your choice; just click the appropriate scripts for what you wish to employ.

Hope it's useful, guys. I've attached it below - it's just snuck in under the size limit! - so 'twill simplify downloading it for many of you.

Enjoy.

Mike. ;)
