My name is Legion: for we are many

Post by Jasper »

@wiak

The prominence of Fossapup (Fossies???) based offerings on the forum?

I may not have the definitive answer, however did it slip your mind that it was created by 666 philb ?

The acolytes rejoiced when the kernel 6.6.6 was released.

Kernel 6.6 "Long Time Support"

In relation to old-timers......

The British Government have decided to stop 'universal' Winter Fuel payments to the elderly.

One harsh winter..........

What is the issue with the number 666? It just comes after 665. I understand your joke of course, but whole 666 thing a lot of nonsense of course... ;-)

As for Fossapup. Been a useful wee distro (tho I much preferred and long ago long used FossaDog).

Was more interested in determining if any of the House Training, Advanced Topics, and International Area were for any distros here other than Pups-only sections, but I've decided not to bother about this since I'm in process of considering my future involvement on the forum for lots of reasons and sometimes personal circumstances (though whatever I decide I will continue to work on FirstRib maintenance and development since used by my family anyway). I'm finding I'm too busy and losing track of stuff I once knew well (rusty) though very close at least to a KL_UbuntuNobleSwayWaybar release at last (struggled cos had forgotten much of the needed Sway related configuration details) so hope to ... at last ... get that finished and available as another (simple/small/much-unpolished) forum distro option. I like Sway since so well and longterm supported and can make pretty small and efficient (albeit basic) distros with it.

"In Xanadu did Kublai Khan, A pleasure dome erect ........"

I do understand how the 'real estate' of the forum can at times overlook interesting and new developments.

Ideally there should be somewhere prominent to highlight these and to encourage participation and harvest interest.

The focus appears to be mainly in the area of providing package management and access to repositories of applications.

Which may suit the majority of users who have no interest in 'how things work'.

Apathy?

Have the script kiddies grown up and moved on?

Personally, if I find something of interest and it is not currently available to me. I do tend to try to find a solution. So for me, the oldest OS I use does keep me engaged and it's a mental challenge.

Something that did come to mind is the 'Reddit/HackerNews' forums, where members can vote for topics.

These then move up and down the sections as interest is registered.

Would these be a solution to not always having OS specific topics?

It would be a shame to see you go.

I like the idea of small un-polished projects, it gives users and idea of what is possible and an opportunity to build open.

You piqued my interest with the mention of 'Sway'.

With a bit time, maybe this would be available for Fossapup64-95 users.

........... needs an updated version of Cmake I know already :P

Apples and oranges.........I made a forum specifically for FirstRib........no one besides myself has been involved with it for several years now.

You want a forum restructure then discuss it directly in earnest.

I am not a professional forum builder nor organizer.....the furthest thing from a Librarian, just an old worn down Gaffer who once made movies and mistrusts governments and reacts to being stabbed in the back.

@Jasper I have contacted you directly and no response either. You have a problem with me?

@Jasper How about more communicating ? (I mean real communicating, not so much cryptic messages, just properly replying... human to human...).

I don't see anyone being stabbed in the back rockedge. In my post I'm simply signalling two things. One, that despite fighting against it in my mind I feel I have to face the reality that it would be a long time if ever I could get back on top of KL-related forum matters. As I said I will be continuing to maintain existing firstrib scrips because my family needs that anyway. But matters concerning building/polishing distros and publishing such has slipped away from me due to life situation matters. I think therefore it might be best to give up admin role under wiak name since I am hardly sble to involve myself these days.

Second, though I therefore cannot contribute to further consideration of forum structure I do feel membership should be concerned with a consideration towards changing forum structure since the old is glaringly old here and the active new areas no real future when most outsidets have little chance to know about them. Not a problem if everyone else is fine with old pups continuing dominating position. It is PLDF afterall, but whilst I cant offer new structure I do believe a discussion and decision on forum structure is now necessary to avoid decay.

But I will suggest the idea: strive for a collaborative forum approach instead of current separation arrangement. Certainly the distros are all significantly different (but much difference even between all KL distros). I'd suggest one house training, users, advanced and so on with the separations needed to account for difference inside the main sections. Thus same status in terms of exposure to outside public for all established forum distros. As things stand the forum shows no signs of adapting to actual ongoing change - old puppy rules the roost. But my feeling is not a request for any forum member to do the restructuring work. Just stating my view that it is badly needed or decay will set in permanently too.

Sorry, no time to even fix the mis-spellings on this Android phone.

I will run some experiments on a test platform which is a one to one copy of this forum. Try to unify some of the sections.

I disagree with the idea of putting stuff together.

The separation is needed to keep the differences from making it hard to even discuss issues or fixes.

The name of the forum is Puppy Linux Discussion forum.

Not all the possible Linux operating systems someone wants to come up with and have a forum to talk about them.

I think it is sectioned off good right now.

Maybe the different operating system sections, that are not Puppy Linux, need to have more discussion sections under them.

Where the other OS's are located. This needs to be more of a section title than it is now.
Just titled Forum is saying nothing about why it is even there.

Something like: Linux Operating Systems, similar to Puppy Linux, but not Puppy Linux

The Kennel Linux Distros section may be better to also have in this section of the forum

Just because you may not be working on a new version of Puppy Linux.
You may not know about the newest ones that are there to now use.

Just because there is a newer way to do something, does not make it the best way.

Puppy Linux is full of old programs, that just work, for what they are designed to do.
Constantly trying to invent the wheel, is not good, if it is not making a needed improvement.

I can tell you for sure, a lot of stuff in Puppy has improved, but because it was needed to fix bugs, how it worked, newer hardware support, and to stop having issues.
That is driving the release of a newer version.

Puppy does not need a new operating system, so more money can be made from people having to buy it.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
