Can you provide debian package names for?
I can look at it, and maybe include something.
Or if i choose to not include it - anyone can make modules by apt2sfs.
Keep distro slim small size in priority.
My LiveUSB DogLinux Bookworm build for hardware testing (nvidia-drivers, GPUTest)
Package manager names: TLDR, BTOP, NEOFETCH/FASTFETCH.
Findsmb, useful, would come from the Puppy family of packages as it is build within WoofCE when SAMBA is built-in. Findsmb is also available in the KL family of packages. Useful as it is a terminal command as well as the others.
fastfetch is only in trixie and sid : https://packages.debian.org/search?suit ... =fastfetch

I think it can be easy back-ported.
I don't want to include none of it to 01-filesystem.squashfs.
But maybe fredx181 can include .squashfs module with these additions to new version of .iso.
I will update my liveusb at next month. I will remove quick-remaster from BASE_DOG_APPS_INSTALL=
And update initrd1.xz for all kernels. And update furmark2

I see no need for @fredx181 to create an SFS at this point. I'm content as things are.
I will test when the next version is present.
Thanks for this effort. It works and works well as is.

Hello @fredx181 and THANKS for the updated version
I have concluded a ISO file boot test via Ventoy USB. I noticed the option for the booting system to contain distro session changes on the Persistence partition. Since this is the same approach as presented in KL distros, it matches the system drive partitions that I have and use for ALL forum distros where sessions are kept in its Sessions folder on the partition labeled Persistence.
Following sections of this post is removed. The prior report was inaccurate!
Clarity wrote: Fri Nov 22, 2024 8:46 amHello @fredx181 and THANKS for the updated version
....
Taking the COPY2RAM option with NO change to its stanza, the distro boots to desktop. But, if I take either boot options 2 or 3 for directing the sessions, it fails as follows ....
First, using Ventoy too, for me boot option 2 works as it should.
Second, I don't understand, option 4 (Copy2ram) "with NO change to its stanza" as you say, doesn't contain changes=LABEL:Persistence/Sessions
, so how can it show at your Copy2RAM picture: "testing filesystem on LABEL:Persistence/..." ?
And I had a look at the boot stanza's in the ISO, the only difference of boot option 4 with 2 and 3 is that it has copy2ram and has no "changes=/..." appended.
EDIT:
There is an interesting twist that occurred on Copy2RAM, where the unchanged stanza finds and uses a prior session. This is seen in the Copy2RAM pic above. Is this a design 'on purpose' or a bug? I was expecting a pristine boot without prior session use.
Not by design. Weird !!
Yes. I updated the Copy2RAM note in my prior post before seeing the post from you.
That finding Persistence Session was a surprise to me too.
@Clarity
If it really is that it boots option 2 when you select option 4, I'd say that there's something very wrong with your Ventoy install.
Hi @fredx181, checksum seems OK e0c576e3a0b4febbfc8d6eb5aeb8e0df

Ventoy v97 seems OK.
Tomorrow, in an effort to see if its an operation miscue of some sort. I will try a new download to the boot USB and run the same test via launching from SG2D to review booting on this test PC

Yes, ok, same for me.
As it may be a build consideration, the following are the admin tools I use most often to determine operations health and subsystem behaviors. They are:
samba and its utilities including smbclient, tldr, btop (as you know is probable the best of the "top" commands), hardinfo2 and fastfetch/neofetch.
Nice to haves are geany and mtpaint/gimp for their presence in most of the forum WoofCE, Fatdog, KLs, remasters, etc and familiar to forum members.
Dont take this the wrong way ... anyone ... as I do recognize that the distros are a developer's choice for what they want users to have, OOTB. So, this is not a request. But, it shows what I have to go thru just to manage testing on the test PCs I have. I use these as they are the toolkit that most students immediately seek when booting the tests distros. So its not just something personal I cranked out of my "U NO WHAT". Again, this is a view of the base for the modern Linuxes of Puppyland.
These students, like the rest of us, conduct much of their efforts via LANs either in classrooms or home. So the smb stuff is what all of us would use in our LAN environments. They come from MACs, Chromebooks or Windows with operational knowledge with those to do the customary LAN things and tools. So the elements I mention are equivalents to what they have in OOTB that they are accustomed to. And, YES, I know many of the forum distros have these very things included.
In the last decade of working with students and other seniors, family, and friends, no one has ever complained about the size of an ISO anymore. And, I haven't seen a user with a 32bit PC in over a decade. My non-profit donation center stop accepting 32bit donations, years ago.
I have a museum of 32bits I will need the city to come out to take the dozen of PCs and laptops away including an IBM micro-channel as well as token-ring gear I use to use. YES, I have a museum of @#$!& hanging around. Many of the top distros have abandoned 32bit support and development as they find its too taxing for continuing efforts on iron of that older class.
@Clarity
As a NOOB, I fully agree with needing those tools to test and try out different systems.
I feel lost if I don't have the tool I need and fumble along to get it if it is missing.
Thanks for giving a bit more insight into what you do.
That must keep you going and importantly keep up with the needs of those you help.
Thanks again

I use mount.cifs it is included. And it is enough to access to smb.

apt-get is working. apt2sfs tool included.
As i said before. I don't want to include none of this packages to 01-filesystem.squashfs.
Keep it slim in priority to boot with copy2ram. By default i boot with copy2ram.
Because at my work (in repair shop) i use 1 usb flash drive to boot few customers notebooks/PCs.
If RAM requirements of build is small - i don't need to check amount of RAM before boot (2GB is enough in any cases).
Different users wants to include different packages.
Maybe somebody want to make MAX version of DogLinux with as many packages as possible.
But i think it is wrong way. Better to let users make own modules with their software.
make your modules(s)
keep your modules in folder live/modules
Don't need to make modules again if updated version of DogLinux build is out. Just keep your modules in folder live/modules
.
It is a way to use modular Linux system. In this case boot from live
folder is much better than boot from .iso.

HI @gumanzoy
Couple of items to share on your post.
I REPEAT, distros that are presented on the forum are what a developer want a user to have. Your distro is such. So YOU are not criticized and your work is appreciated.
On your SAMBA concern, yes mount is there. But a home user with limited resources and other home devices and TVs in this modern age is not the a repair shop. So a user, tester, student, members of the forum will often create-download-use data on the Linux PC that they would merely share to their home units, their phones, LAN connected PCs FROM their Linux PC. SO, a "mount" of a remote resource does NOT address the need to share info-data-media that is on the local linux PC. "mount" commands allows ability for movement OUT or copy into a PC, but it is NOT a "Sharing subsystem" that is in every top 10 Linux distros, 'including official community distros', OOTB. New users, actually ANY user, need not install anything to go immediately to work in their networks.
There's more to comment on what you said, but this was not intended to be a debate. If such is desired, I am available off-line via PM if such will lead to a better product. And, as I do for all the distros I test, I continue to support your contributions the same as I do for all the other distros I test for observation and reporting.
Your Ventoy work has not gone un-noticed and is a 'great' contribution, as well, though I had not mentioned this to you before.
Every effort to make and show a base minimal system that easy to navigate in a LAN setting as the MACs and Windows do, OOTB, is a plus to the attractiveness of Puppy Linux Forum's distro offerings. And, it appears, over the years (seems to have started with @01micko "Slacko" and @kirk's "FATDOG"), this has been the target for many community distros for a decade and can be seen in their builds.
@Clarity Hopefully one day you will stop pushing things so much (by writing words only). Altogether it's excessive IMO.
I'm too old to create and support a distro. I can test and report distros, subsystems, and application use to help when I can.
If I was a decade younger, I would do so. I have already tested such things like builds via WoofCEs, KLs, including the DDog builder and the other DOG builder; and also have tested remasters in most every community offering over the years.
But I have known for more than 5 decades the value of support. And as everyone has heard from me before, I appreciate the work and efforts I draw attention to in the community.
There is great development demonstrations and contributions that this community presents to the world!
No offense to you or anyone.
@Clarity

Just make module with samba package, copy it to live/modules
and at next boot you get it OOTB.
But. I think samba is not intuitive tool for file sharing to newbie users. It need to create config and restart service before use.
Maybe these steps can simplifies by some GUI.
It not support on Android phones OOTB.
For newbie users i believe have some other file sharing tool.
I can suggest webfsd (not included to my build) but it need to run from cmdline.
About my DogLinux build. It is not general purpose universal OS.
For general purpose i use standard Debian installation.
I don't look at other Puppy distros. It's beyond my interests.
My build - is just portable tool for hardware testing purpose.
Before i use SystemRescueCd (Gentoo based) but it not fill all my requirements.
So i create build with small size as Slax but with some tools from SystemRescueCd plus GPU support.
Anyone can make modules by apt2sfs and customize my build. It is good feature of DogLinux.
Thanks to all developers and contributors.
I include all i need. My build existed from may 2021 and package list changes very slightly.
I already pick and include some software from users suggestions.
If i think software is useful and i will use it - i include it.
If you interesting, feel free to create modules and share your extended version of .iso.
It is not create and support distro. It is just customization with software you need.
I think you just want to let me include packages you requested. But i hope i explain my decision clearly.

Thanks @gumanzoy, you are most helpful.
@fredx181, I just ran extensive testing to try and recreate the problem I reported last night. At this stage I feel I was tired as I was testing the various scenarios in booting and I CREATED, unwittingly, that problem as I was testing the various stanzas from the distro boot-menu. (Old and Tired! ... Wow )
THERE IS NOT COPY2RAM problem. It works as all of us expect.
I have tested via SG2D, via Ventoy, and within a KVM that mimics the bare-metal. NO Copy2RAM issue.
Disregard the prior reference I made earlier.
I am now moving on the the other boot issue I ran into.
I will remove my first report on booting. I cannot repeat nor understand what environmental misuse I did to have the issues I reported.
Using the results of the session saved, above, I rebooted taking option #2 for Persistence folder. System boots without issue finding all of the admin packages I installed that was saved from the prior pristine boot.
Apologies!!!

Again, THANKS!
The effort you reference is already used by PUPs and KLs, OOTB. They have a SAMBA Management utiility (a GUI) that shows up in the desktop Menu that has a pre-set /etc/samba/smb.conf to get users started. KLs adopted this so that members would surely recognize the ability, IMHO ... Not to mention that the KL developers were all prior Puppy members so it was natural that they would do so for KLs; the familiarity.
Phones and Home devices
For TVs, Android (and Apple devices) there are file-management as well as video/media apps that can access the DDog PC (without wires). Tablets too. And there are couple home units too, which can/do use smb file transfer mechanisms.
VLC is just one of the apps which has intelligence for discovery and connection and/or exchanges. ... but only for media files. There are file-managers for each platform which provide connections and file exchanges for any files. as user needs. I have used a half-dozen of them over the past decade (PM me, if you want to know couple of them I use, currently).
I use to ONLY back up my phone wirelessly to a SAMBA PC. Today, I exchange photos/video/music like the students do for my personal use in the car. My phone is integral exchange partner for info and data via SAMBA.
