32bit Puppys for Low RAM update 241024

Here is a comparison of ram use for some of the Puppy's on a low powered single core 1gb computer. Although these will vary depending on the exact computer, they can be used as a relative reference. Use was checked immediately after booting.

Low powered computers using Puppy
Test hardware:
Compaq v5201 (2004):
cpu = 2.0ghz AMD Sempron Mobile 3300 32bit, Passmark v9 = 444
ram = 1gb ddr pc2700 (2x512)

Notes:
Frugal installs
Grub4Dos menu.lst file using pfix=nocopy,fsck
Booted with minimal save folder
Ram Used taken from terminal "free" command
ZRAM swap increases available ram using compression, appears to be faster than using swap file or swap partition

Bearing in mind that bandwidth and available storage space are the deciding factors with this kind of thing, I'd say it's totally unrealistic to expect to find absolutely everything in one individual's repos. Ally does pretty well in this respect; peebee provides more than this community has any right to expect as it is.

A better idea, as discussed elsewhere in recent weeks, might perhaps be to put a lot of this stuff into a dedicated directory over at Ibiblio.......but TBH, I don't know who has the necessary permissions TO upload stuff there. I think most folks here know how to locate Ibiblio, since there's already an awful lot of Puppy stuff there anyway.

Sorry for my delay in answering, somehow missed your post. For the test computer above browser choices would be:

-Firefox (optimized) or Chromium portable (both for web site compatibility)
-Palemoon (for video streaming)

Be sure to check this topic: viewtopic.php?t=12982

My experience has been any system with a Passmark v9 score less than 600 will struggle with the web, especially streaming.

What version of these browsers are recommended?, glibc is THE limiting factor. updating glibc is a nightmare!

PS: running AtomicPupXIX on an ASUS eee 1000HE. no internet, but does everything else well.

Depends on your wants and needs, older versions may require less resources and run better, but won't work with many web sites. Have a neighbor who is running Windows Vista and Chrome browser version 49, for her use and the sites she visits it all works fine. Best to do some experimenting to find what works for you. Sometimes it's a combination of more than one browser/version.

Lots of web sites are continuly changing browser requirements for security reasons, so it's a moving target as to what will work.

Strangely, Firefox-ESR is least affected by glibc. 2.22 is minimum for 32bit 68.9.0 (Jun 2020, is 64mb) - should run in 1Gb ram fine. Last official 32bit Palemoon 28.9.3 (May 2020, is 39mb). Runs in Bionicpup32-8.0 (glibc 2.27) & ScPup32-20.06 (glibc 2.30).

I'm posting from an updated version of ScPup32-20.06. Kernel is 5.10.218pae, browser is Palemoon 33.1.1.
With pfix=nocopy in kernel line of grub, 115mb used at first desktop.
Currently 299mb used with Palemoon running. glibc is 2.30, gcc 9.3.0.
