Wine 8.0 Stable (32-bit & 64-bit) SFS does not appear to work with Bookwormpup64 10.0.8

I believe GLIBC_2.40 is now used

Code: Select all

# winecfg
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/libexec/connman/libadjtime.so' from /etc/ld.so.preload cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64): ignored.
/usr/lib/wine/wine: /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.34' not found (required by /usr/lib/wine/wine)
#

Hi vtpup,
Thanks for that update, I will put a note on the appropriate pages warning it won't work on BookwormPup64 10.0.8 and later.

@vtpup :-

Looks like you're barking up the right tree, after all. Even the guy I get the AppImages from, over at Github, has pulled the same stunt. I just tried WINE 9.20, annnd......like you, the error says glibc 2.40 is now required.

Most of these guys all seem to run, and build on Arch.....and as we all know, since Arch is a "rolling release" that means it's constantly upgrading EVERYTHING to the very newest versions ALL THE TIME. That's not a bad thing in itself, but it does mean that anyone who wants to consume said user's output pretty much has to be running Arch themselves. Something like Debian is no good, since they usually run older, more stable packages, a few releases behind the cutting-edge stuff.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again; if you're going to build stuff for general public consumption, you have to cater for a wide range of environments and use-cases. Building on cutting-edge is a waste of time.....unless you intend to cater just for your fellow distro users.

So; until we get something with a newer glibc OOTB, it looks like v9.19 will be the limit for now. Me, I still use WINE v5.11; it does everything I want from it, and is remarkably stable under use. I'm happy with it; it "works" for me...

@mikewalsh Thanks for confirmation, Mike. BTW when you tried 9.19 WINE staging and it did work, were you on BWP64 ver 10.8? Or were you on 10.6? I couldn't even get the 8.0 WINE sfs working on 10.8 version of BWP64.

Total agreement about no problem using older versions of WINE, for me. I'm just having problems w/ running a WINE 32 program on any WINE version on BWP64 v 10.8, even with usual apt upgrade to architecture.

My main test (and essential) 32 bit program is my 32 bit printer driver. BTW I just got that working finally on F96CE r4. I suspect a similar problem here on BWP. I think the I386 libraries are incomplete from apt, and probably need grafting from our older 32 bit SFS's for puppies (keeping usr merge in mind for locating). That's a guess at the problem.....

Okay. Now then:-

To answer your question more fully, when I made that last statement, I was at that point in 10.0.6. I hadn't made the move to 10.0.8. However; I've just set-up a 'test' install of 10.0.8 - a few minutes ago - and to answer your question, yes; WINE-'staging' v9.19 DOES run quite happily here in 10.0.8. Happy? :D

(I did a quick'n'dirty install to a new directory with a '[test]' designation, and then committed the ultimate sin - for quickness - I copied over my save-folder from 10.0.6. Oh, I know, I know; you're not supposed to do this. But I did just this when radky published the RC5 build of StretchPup a few years ago; swapped the save-folder over from RC4.....and everything continued to work perfectly. As it's so far doing here.)

It's only we 'vets' who do daft stuff like this, along with a reasonably high expectation that things WILL work. Of course, we don't recommend noobs and inexperienced users do this.....unless (like me) you've got oodles of disk space and can afford to set-up a completely 'new' test version alongside an existing, 'working' Pup.

I do this a lot, if I want to try out new ideas.

I shall have to try 9.20 again, now I'm here..... Watch this space.

EDIT:- Okay; WINE-staging v9.20 DOES run here in 10.0.8. I'll get this packaged and uploaded in the next day or so, if anybody really wants it...

Yup; I concur. As things stand, re-creating a new save won't be too painful ATM, since I don't have that much invested in BWP64 yet. As stated above, we definitely wouldn't recommend this course of action to noobs, etc.

Me, I've been messing around with Puppies for long enough by now to have a rough idea of what WILL work (and what won't...)

'Sall part of the fun, buddy. :D YOU know it as well as I do!

Using an older save in a newer version of a named Puppy will usually work, unless the difference in the versions is drastic.

But it has to be the same Puppy, but just different versions.

Example:
BookwormPup64 10.0.4 to 10.0.6 to 10.0.7 to 10.0.8

I have been doing this in BookwormPup64 since version 10.0.4, using the same save file that was made in 10.0.4

However, anything in the save that is kernel specific has needed to be redone, because each version is using a different Linux kernel.
Example:
I have to redo the install of a nvidia driver package, to get it compiled for the correct kernel, now being used.

Using

Code: Select all

apt upgrade

You can use this to update any of the software you installed using apt package manager, that is going to be in the save.

If you added a lot of pet packages to get added software.

I think the jury is out, on how apt upgrade may affect them.

I agree, a new to Puppy Linux user, it is not a good idea for them to try using an older save, in a newer version of a named Puppy OS.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Librewolf - mozilla-based security oriented browser - SFS package.
Librewolf is a fork of Firefox, is friendly to set up and comes with Ublock Origin already installed. Librewolf can use all the same extensions/addons that are available for Firefox.
Works fine in BookwormPup64
