No systemd, dependency package management

Post by libertas »

I use Slackware for server and also desktop, Devuan on laptop.
Also use Fatdog occasionally that has some goodies I like.
I searched, but didn't find a comparison table between all Puppies and derived ones.
Is there any?

I have much less available time now than twenty years ago, so to have a package system that handles dependencies would be great., with lots of packages available.
And no systemd.
As simple as possible.

What flavour would you recommend? Debiandog? Other?

Thanks

BookwormPup and F96-CE_4 have apt, so handling dependencies well AFAIK.
Also goes for Debian Dog and Devuan Dog.

Um.....crikey. It's a nice idea, but.....well; due to the huge number of Puppy derivatives, such a thing would be a major project all in itself. And someone would, I feel, have to be prepared to devote a good portion of their spare time, for several weeks, into collating and organizing all those details into some kind of "comparison document" for community consumption.

On top of that, due to the regularity with which new derivatives appear, such a document would need to be regularly updated. It would be a full-time, ongoing project for someone....

Any takers? :D

Mike. ;)

Welcome to Linux software!  :(

I have never been able to 100%, all the time, download and install any program developed for Linux, and have it work OK in a specific Linux OS.

Even the programs that are compiled for a specific version of Linux and provided from a repository of software for that specific version of Linux.

Most will download, install, and work OK.

But some will need something done, that was not provided by the download, how they were compiled, or how they were setup to run.

Even the stuff offered in the forums Additional Software section, is never going to download and work, in every possible version of Puppy Linux.

Again, Welcome to Linux software!

If you have not, need to read this:
viewtopic.php?t=1819

There are topics in the forums BookwormPup and Fossapup sections, specifically about programs that are provided, that have been tested to work in those versions of Puppy.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

libertas, "I use Slackware for server and also desktop, Devuan on laptop...What flavour (Puppy) would you recommend?"

All Puppys are binary compatible 'snap-shots' of some major Linux distro. [As you know, this Forum provides space for discussions about small, portable operating systems other than 'woof-created' Puppys. Among those others are FatDog, EasyOS and the 'debian dogs'.]

Ditto what Mikewalsh wrote about 'a comparison table'. So it may be best if limit your search to Puppys which provide package managers that you are already familiar with. Like Devuan, Bookworm and VanillaDpup offer Apt and Synaptic as package managers. S15Pup is binary compatible with Slackware 15.0. You'll find download links for these in the Mainline Puppy Linux Distros Section. https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewforum.php?f=114. But don't overlook mistfire's QuickPup64 24.01 RC 14 --based on Slackware-current-- the latest version of which can be downloaded from the link here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 77#p134277. It is more up-to-date and provides more options than S15Pup.

I like VoidPup. However, not really being familiar with Apt available under recent 'Ubuntu-and-debian-based' Puppys I sometime have to refer to this thread https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 215#p90215 for instructions. VoidPup employs Void's native package manager. Although I suspect that that was fashioned after Apt, I've never gotten an answer to the question about what commands it employs. And if I were to use a Void-based operating system, it would probably be KLV-Airedale, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewforum.php?f=191 which rockedge and others maintain, offering updated versions frequently.

VoidPup

I still have an install of VoidPup, but somehow the package manager VUP (if I remember correctly) couldn't resolve hostnames, although the system could do it, from CLI or web browsers.

Thanks to all for the insights, I'll try some of the suggestions.

I used to compile lots of software for Slackware, but now, when I look at gscan2pdf, for example, with many perl dependencies, it's discouraging. Even with some kind of third-party package manager like sbopkg and sboui.
Many times some package for current fails and, well, I give up.
So, I presume that the Slackware based suggestions all suffer from the same issue.

@libertas

The VoidPup Package Manager is VPM.

If you want to change the location of the package repositories to one closer to you:

viewtopic.php?t=12298

For me, it's ideal, it has up to date packages and it's a rolling release.

If I am not using Fossapup64-95 then it's VoidPup64 for me.

Bookworm Dog is one you create yourself using Fred's software and picking options. You have the option of systemd should you want or need it. There are lot things that seemed designed for systemd systems so... sometimes easier to use a systemd system than try to do workarounds.
