Intel AC-7260 internal WIFI not found on Bionic Pup 32 19.03

Post by franken_t3 »

Good evening,

I was using Bionic Pup 32 on a usb drive just testing to see if old netbook (Acer Aspire One AOA150/ZG5 1.6 ghz Atom) could be some use.
But then I got ambitious and switched out the Aetheros built in card with an Intel AC-7260.
It does not show on bootup. In the panel for network, it shows "no wireless" and only gives profile for Ethernet. I don't recall having to do anything for the other card for Bionic to see it.
It also does not show in bios but I don't remember if the Aetheros card did or not. Also, switching the wireless toggle button does not do anything and there is no green light blinking.
Any help appreciated. thanks

PS: I read on this forum from two years ago, this AC-7260 card should be recognized by Bionic but not sure where to verify.

@franken_t3 - Welcome! It's likely you're missing either a driver or firmware or both. There are terminal commands to check this.
In a maximised terminal, please run (& then post output here):

lspci -nn | grep etwork (command starts with a lowercase L & has pipe symbol in middle, usually shift+\ keys)

and then run:

dmesg | grep irmware

and finally, run:

uname -r

The first command runs but just goes back to CL with no data.
If I run it without the "grep etwork" then it lists some devices but the wireless card isn't listed.
Not sure how to get the information over to this pc which is win10 so I attached a picture.
Thanks for looking.
dmesg | grep irmware
[0.489248] ACPI: [Firmware Bug]: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored

uname -r
4.19.288

@franken_t3 - seems the wireless adaptor is either blocked (turned off) or faulty.
Please try the following in a terminal:

rfkill unblock all

then

lspci -nn

How to copy and paste from a terminal or some other program and paste in a post.

In a terminal highlight what you want to copy (that copies it for most terminals in Puppy) or if it is a program that has a right click option menu, select copy from it.

The copied stuff should be in some kind of clipboard.

to paste in the forum post witting screen.
Put the input cursor where you want to paste.
Click the middle mouse button or right click and select paste, from the options.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

This is not what I expected :o

I ran this and nothing new was found.

So I guess it must be the card (brand new) or its installation.
Or maybe bios isn't updated for it? No listings on official site anymore.
But no worries, the other card was working so I'll recheck the new one and then put the old one back if no luck.
thanks

Try

Code: Select all

rfkill list

Does it give any info about devices?

I'd try the older bionicpup32-8.0+0-uefi.iso

Your problem happened to me, my wifi card is not detected by Bionicpup32 19.03 in my ACER Aspire One ZA3, but works fine with bionicpup32-8.0+0-uefi.iso

I had run the "delta" updates on the original bionicpup32-8.0+0-uefi, so Iḿ actually running bionicpup32-8.0+15-uefi.iso

What wi-fi card was this for?
I took a little break from this project but yesterday I did update the bios to 33.10 (was at 33.01) but no change to devices.
I reran all the earlier suggestions and the card doesn't show in bios or in devices when I try network setup.
So if the solution is to get an older version of Puppy, I assume there are other distros that would find it.
I'm going to try one more "Linux compatible" card and then probably just go back to original.
I also have a couple other live distro that I will test out. thanks

I have a similar netbook to yours, an Acer Aspire AOA150, and it has an Atheros 542 onboard WiFi chip. I've had pretty good luck
using peabee's Slackware based Puppys, latest available here viewtopic.php?p=134752#p134752
with other older releases available from the Internet Archives viewforum.php?f=195
One of these Pups may have the needed driver for your WiFi.

@franken_t3

In terminal next time try

<command> > filename.txt

eg

lscpi -nn > report.txt

uname -r > report.txt

.......... the text file will be in your Home directory.

the card doesn't show in bios

If the BIOS cannot detect the card then anything else you try will be irrelevant.

Are you sure that the card is plugged into the socket correctly?

From pictures I have seen, it looks like your Acer has the old full-height mpcie wifi card. Is your ac-7260 a half-height card?
