Will Puppy support Dell B2360dn laser printer?

Post by Barkingmad »

Hello all

It's a long time since I've posted but only because everything as been going well computer wise. Now I need some help.

I've spotted a Dell B2360dn laser printer at a realy keen price but wanted to check on the chances for getting it printing in Puppy before buying.

Thre is a Dell download page herehttps://www.dell.com/support/home/en-uk ... ll-b2360dn that offers a Linux driver zip file. Showing further details lists what I assume is the contents of the zip and I have pasted this list to this post.

I would like to know if any of these files are what I would need to use this printer in Puppy, particulary Bionic 8.0 ot Xenial 7.5?

Thanks for any advice, even if it's "forget this printer" ;)

I downloaded the package and looked inside. This printer appears to be Postscript-capable. That means you only need the PPD file to run it and not an extra CUPS driver/filter. That's good. But it comes with an installer script that I didn't understand, so I'm not sure.

This printer may be AirPrint-capable, so you might be able to run it in "driverless" mode and avoid all the above stuff. But you need a CUPS setup that handles AirPrint.

Also, this is an enterprise-class printer that uses passwords. I don't know how that works in a home Linux environment. But it would be interesting to find out.

Thank you for going to that length.

If you can't see exactly what the driver install is trying to do I think I'll pass on this one.

You also say the printer uses passwords. What do you mean by that and where did you find the info? This is something new to me that I might need to know if looking at other models some time.

I have also found a user manual as pdf at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-uk ... 360dn/docs

Thanks for you trouble.

A year or two ago I bought an HP laser printer from Best Buy. I intended to connect my (Puppy OS) computer to the printer with a USB cable, but it turned out that the printer wouldn't work unless I first connected the printer to the Internet. I had to download an HP "app" to my phone, then give it my wifi password so it could tell the printer via Bluetooth how to connect to my wifi router. After that, it actually did work in Puppy through the USB cable.

There is nothing on the box the printer came in that says the printer requires an Internet connection to work. One of the employees at Best Buy said that every printer is that way these days. I don't know that the printer has to remain connected to the Internet to continue working. Maybe it just has to get permission from HP to work.
