old brother mono laser printer woes.

printer is br HL 1110 mono laser printer.
have installed brlaser
downloaded rpm of wrapper. and lpr driver
usb connected.
installed new toner cartridge
installed wrapper as lpd://hostename/queue.

getting print error about filter failure ??? on test page-paper feeds but no images/text.
printer on other side of room, V awkward to get up and faultfind for >2min in 10.

please lay out detailed noob instructions on how to proceed. afaimc, all linux is labelled boxes but i've don't know what's in them. i cannot now learn how to use it as my mind is no longer viable to process, absorb/retain the data. i'm 71yo, and it's showing
.do i need 32bit compatibility? pls, where do i get that??

@boof - I use the HP Laserjet 4 driver via Cups, works with all my brother lasers. If it works, much simpler than trying to get their software working.
