Heh. I've seen ya lurking around Linux.org, mate, don't think I haven't. They're not a bad bunch over there, either; very friendly and welcoming (just like our gang, really.)
Not all Linux "watering-holes" are full of self-centered 'ubergeeks', y'know..... Me - as wizard said back near the beginning - I don't know squat. I'm an ignoramus where Linux is concerned, BUT.....I do believe in community, and helping each other out.
As long as we remember that, we won't go far wrong.
Mike.
Hi Mike
I was fairly excited when you popped up on the Porteus and specifically Porteux forum. Hope to see you there more. I think you would find the OS enjoyable and equally Lego-like as Puppy.

Heh. Umm....me & Porteus, it's kind of "on", then "off". I've played around with it a number of times over the years, more so when I was still fairly new to Linux and was full of excitement at all the possibilities. I get spells when I'm all fired-up & enthusiastic about it.....and then I lose interest for a while. The one thing I find finicky about Porteus is the whole business of building the 'modules' for each and every update of any given app; browsers, especially, get updated so often it can prove really tedious. It's another reason I like the 'portables' we developed, because 9 out of 10 of them update 'in-situ' without needing to re-build anything.
Thank God I can always return to the sanity of the kennels!
I've also played around with Arnold the Bat's open-source ChromiumOS builds for several years now, but they've always been a bit hit'n'miss. Since finding out about Google's ChromeOS-Reflex - in particular, the fact they are trying to get more people using it by the simple expedient of making it work with more 'mainstream' hardware - I've had an install on the SSD I rescued from the anciente Dell Inspiron 1100 when it 'popped its clogs' a couple of year back. This is an old PATA/IDE unit from Transcend, fitted into a truly ancient Compaq floppy-disk storage box I've had for almost 30 years, and hooked-up via a PATA-to-SATA convertor and then a SATA-to-USB 3.0 cable. Kind of a "DIY" external SSD, but ChromeOS-Reflex is as happy as a pig in shit on this drive, and runs really well.....so I'm currently alternating between this and Puppy.
Who knows? You may well see me over there again one of these days. Time will tell...!
Mike.
The 6000 posts milestone was reached this week!
When a person does something good, they deserve our recognition.
When a person persists in doing something good 6000 times, you know their name is @mikewalsh
@fredx181 :-
Thanks, Fred......I think!
Don't understand you guys. What IS this obsession with post count, huh? I've said it before, and I'll say it again; I rarely look at it, TBH......and only noticed it was over the 6000 mark a few days ago completely by accident.
By itself it means very little. All it shows is that I'm bored, and I have lot of spare time due to what I do; as a full-time carer, things can be unpredictable......some days you're rushed off your feet, whereas other days I have a lot of time to myself (and need some way to kill the boredom!)
So long as most of those 6000+ posts have managed to help other folks, that's the main thing.
Mike.
Fellas, what about @bigpup?
He's very helpful too! YAY bigpup (and all the other helpers too!)

You seem to be ahead just now Erik
Well almost... bigpup is beating you somehow.

Of course it's not about post count only, if I would have posted 10000 containing mostly rubbish, I wouldn't get any applause (the opposite then, rotten tomatoes ).
I don't think Mike cares if he gets applause or not. The quantity and quality of his contributions are known by everyone here.
Personally I think there is never any need to artificially applaud since there are many that would have to be applauded, which doesn't happen (because, as I said, merit in terms of contribution is generally obvious). Someone already said "what about bigpup" who is another hard working moderator, and prolific in moderation duties.
But anyway, I say applause inherently to everyone since everyone makes this forum what it is.

@wiak :-
Absolutely, mate. The community isn't just about a few individuals.......it's about ALL of us. My contributions are nothing special; after all, without the hard work of others in creating the Puppies/Dogs/KLVs (and everything else, too!) that they run on, what good would they be?
"Applause" should go to every single member of this community since the beginning of the old forum, more than 20 years ago. It's been a cumulative effect, one development/idea/concept building on another as time has passed, to generally positive effect.......for the benefit of ALL. Everyone contributes in their own way (whether they realise it or not).
I know THIS much; since I joined in 2014, there's never been a dull moment.....and it has - to date - been a LOT of fun.
Mike.
