My Repository has Disappeared!!! Poses a Big Problem. <Solved>

Post by rockedge »

This morning while crafting the KLV-Airedale-sr15 topic to announce it's release, I discovered that all of the files in the repository https://rockedge.org/kernels have DISAPPEARED!

Completely gone. Every file, every kernel package and .xbps package has been somehow deleted. Nothing of the site is left. No explanation as to why this can possibly be.

This will be a definite problem going forward. :o

Terrible!!
When I try to access it gives 'Forbidden", which may be something else than "Disappeared", I think.
Hopefully it's just a temporary thing, good luck !
edit: error message is:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access this resource.Server unable to read htaccess file, denying access to be safe

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

@fredx181 I saw the same thing this morning.......I was surprised because nothing like this should be.....I looked and the directory holding the site and files is empty!

I wrote a ticket to the host provider for more information....no reply yet.

@rockedge :-

Hmm. Here, it's just after 8 pm - an hour and a half after Fred's last post - and for me, it's all accessible. This is in Opera-portable, running under Tahrpup64 ATM. I assume it's all 'fixed' now?

I was granted access again to thin out the ISO's and kernel's under threat from the host provider of violating terms of service by using it as a repository. They were about to kick me off. So I am downloading the stuff then removing a majority of it to again be within the terms.

They never notified me of an issue...they simply placed a hidden .htaccess file that prevented us from accessing any of it. Then when I did manage to get on through a backdoor the directory appeared empty!

At least I can recover the files and then offer a much smaller collection without incurring the wrath of "the man"

Uh.....o-kay. Clue me in, would you? What was this supposed to be, so far as "the man" was concerned? Just personal storage.......and definitely not intended for sharing?

Not knowing how you'd got this set-up, and what the terms of service were, makes it a bit hard to understand what's going on here... :o

This is a good example of why all Puppy related software for download needs to be stored here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/

If you go here you can see they provide storage for a lot of different Linux based OS's.
http://distro.ibiblio.org/

Example:
Some that have sections on this forum.
EasyOS
Fatdog

This repository is fully accessible to us Puppy Linux users or Linux OS users, for downloading the software that is on it.

This repository location is provided free by the University of North Carolina (US).

It is never going to charge a fee to use it. It's free to use!
It is their support for Linux.
They do get something for providing it.
It is used in their courses dealing with computer software, computers, etc.......

You cannot just be anyone to be allowed access to store stuff in this location.
There is a request procedure to be granted permission.

Anyone that is developing and offering a download ISO of a operating system, that are on the Puppy Linux forum.
Should be able to get ability to use this repository.
The ones based on Puppy Linux, should be able to store stuff in a specific directory under the puppylinux main one.
If not a Puppy Linux OS.
The OS may have to be in it's own directory similar to easyos and fatdog have.

If you do not know how to get access to store stuff at this location.

I am sure BarryK or jamesbond could help you get posting permission on this repository of Linux software.
.
.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Clue me in, would you

I have sort of a repository on this shared server and the host provider noticed lots of bandwidth and 100+ G of ISO's with PET and XBPS packages for build script retrieval. So the host admin's, which I refer to as "the man", as in the authorities, broke out the legal-ease and threatened account suspension for maintaining a repository...........

So with "some compliance" I've had to trim down the amount of bandwidth and storage usage to something far less than it had before. With the hope they will leave things alone once they see my timely corrections of the violations.......

Yes, that or similar; sourceforge proves to be a good alternative reliable storage place.

My young son uses KLV_Swayland from the day I published it in October last year. I've not been using it myself, so can't remember much about using Sway, but because I'm in process of making a new Ubuntu-based KL and plan to include desktop option Sway (since makes iso much smaller in practice) I wanted a copy of KLV_Swayland to remind myself how I made it. Unfortunately, at that time, as a quick iso snapshot release I use mega.nz to store it, but today discovered that because I hadn't been accessing that account it was 'gone' and the iso with it... So thank goodness it turns out that I released KLV_Swayland as a build script in terms of recommended way to install it. Some other distros I releases long time back are in iso form right now only so just as well I took the time to publish them on sourceforge rather than mega... To @rockedge therefore I suggest he moves at least the smaller parts of his repository for KLV_Airedale to either github (or similar) or sourceforge or... be very careful to keep your mega account active...
