No Synaptics touchpad found - How to get driver? (solved)

Post by mcman56 »

I have a new install of BookwormPup64_10.0.7 on a Samsung Model code: XE500C13-K01us Chromebook with Intel Celeron CPU N3050 1.6,

The touch pad does not work and when selecting Touchpad manager, I get "No Synaptics touchpad found" and "File /mnt/sdb1/pad was not found on disk!" Looking in /mnt/sdb1 it is empty. I assume it is looking for a driver. Is there a way to provide a driver?

The touchpad worked in lubuntu with Linux version 5.15.0-119-generic. I tried the other flavors of the latest puppys and none recognized the touchpad. Puppy shows the Linux version 6.1.94.

@mcman56 - could be a missing driver (i2c_hid, elantouch maybe) or need libinput config. Bit disturbing that none of the Puppies run it. As 5.15 kernel worked on that old CPU, you may need an older kernel, but with Bookworm, it must be usrmerge & kbuild must be disabled (add .no to end of filename). What other Puppies did you try? Chromebooks usually need special configs. Something to try (at own risk):

For libinput config, you could try making a file in /root folder named .libinputrc , (assuming it doesn't exist) containing:
LIBINPUT_DEFAULT_TOUCHPAD_ON=1
then save it & restart X.

Must have dot at start of filename (is a hidden file) & if file already exists, just add above line to end.
This fixed a touchpad issue in s15pup64.

The file existed but when I added LIBINPUT_DEFAULT_TOUCHPAD_ON=1, the pad is still not recognized. Is there a way to find out what puppu used 5.15.0-119-generic so I could try that versionb?,

@mcman56

In BW64 the default touchpad manager (psynclient) provides access to synclient control of Synaptics touchpads. If your touchpad is not recognized by the synclient utility, there is another option that provides basic libinput control of touchpads.

Go to Puppy Menu -> Setup -> Puppy Setup -> Mouse/Keyboard -> then click the configuration button (lower right). This provides a gui to select the touchpad manager (either Synaptics or Libinput). Choose the Libinput option and click Reboot (and save if prompted).

After rebooting, return to Puppy Setup -> Mouse/Keyboard (Input Wizard) -> then configure your preferred libinput settings for the touchpad.

If the Libinput manager does not work for your touchpad, maybe other forum members with chromebooks will provide additional guidance.

When selecting Libinput, the pad still does not work. All of the menu options the touchpad also disappear.

Just double checking something against a similar issue I had on some models of chromebook - the touchpad would ALSO stop working under ChromeOS sometimes. Turns out the problem was hardware, not software.

Either replacing the touchpad cable OR just removing it and cleaning both ends of the cable AND the two ports with alcohol worked on most of the machines that had the issue. There are also some fixes online involving hot glue and hairdryers - but i found the cable clean/replace was simple and cheap enough.

If the touchpad works fine under ChromeOS though, i doubt this would help.

Just sharing a fix that worked for me.

The touchpad worked in lubuntu with Linux version 5.15.0-119-generic

Can you still boot with this and find out what exact touchpad it is?

Some information program that will provide specific make and model info.

BookwormPup64 has Pup-sysinfo program.

Pup-Sysinfo ->Devices ->Input ->Complete

But not sure it will show anything about yours, if driver or firmware is needed.

Anyway, at least knowing what manufacture it is will be some help to figure out what is needed.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

This is not what I expected :o

Pre-1st cup of coffee. So only an idea & it may be a bad one.

The kernel which worked was 5.15.0-119-generic. The "0-119-generic" are point changes and frequently not by much. Ergo, any 5.15. kernel may have the necessary driver. But remember, Bookworm is "user-merged". Here's the index to published kernels: https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=9218. 5.15.148 64bit USRMERGE Kernel Aufs/Overlayfs might have the driver you need.

firmware is firmware and not kernel specific. It can be 'flinched' from whatever OS has it. Just remember that Bookworm being 'user-merged' you copy it into /usr/lib/firmware.

That procedure is a bit above my skill set. I don't follow the details well. This is a new install without settings so I have no settings to lose or care about crashing the system.

I can download the sfs file and I see a firmware folder. Is there a way to simply replace the existing firmware folder with this new one? Could that work?

Hi @mcman56

Let's go this way:

download and install fossapup64-9.5 (2020) from http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-fossa/ .
As it comes with a lot of old firmware drivers there is a chance that the touch pad will be supported too.

At boot up you'll get an error message from 'Synaptics'. You'll need to delete the file 'load-touchpap-settings' in the /root/Startup directory than save and reboot the system.

By the way - why don't you use a powered USB hub to connect the USB stick and a USB mouse while trouble shooting?

I loaded 9.5 but the touchpad does not work with that either. I get the same error when trying to configure. I did not get the synaptics error at boot.

When I look into the startup folder, there is no synaptics. There is a file called load-touchpad-settings containing "exc flsynclient -s"

The extra configuration button is also not there. - "Go to Puppy Menu -> Setup -> Puppy Setup -> Mouse/Keyboard -> then click the configuration button (lower right)"

The chromebook has two USB ports so I can plug in a mouse for troubleshooting.

Hi @mcman56

start Menu->System->HardInfo and look at Input Devices.
What do you see over there?

start Menu->System->Kernel Modules and look for i2c entries.
Are there any?

start the console and enter dmesg.
Are there any devices found beside keyboard mouse and drives?

This version does not have Kernel Modules but does have Pup-Kview. See screen shots and file. I see nothing in dmesg about a touchpad.

Not that I think it is related but since converting from chromebook I have had one issue across all versions of linux tried. Running any browser, the CPU will go to 100% and the whole system will lock up. Some times it is right away and sometimes it will run for a while.

It is interesting to see those audio port failures because I suspected my trouser freezes were related to audio. Logs I looked at suggested a link but ti was over my head.

Not that I think it is related but since converting from chromebook I have had one issue across all versions of linux tried. Running any browser, the CPU will go to 100% and the whole system will lock up. Some times it is right away and sometimes it will run for a while.

I believe that model chromebook has a dual core braswell cpu - and 4 GB or RAM - and your zram seems maxed (from the above post) - Even Firefox might stress those settings.

You might want to try waterfox - it seems to run a little better than firefox on my chromebooks with dual cores and 4gb of RAM.

I realize that's not going to help your touchpad issue. But if if the chromebook is going to be used along with other machines (and not solo) you might want to try barrier (a software KVM switch) and just control it via another machine.

For the two chromebooks I have with bad touchpads and/or keyboards I use them as "smart monitors" using barrier

The touchpad worked in lubuntu with Linux version 5.15.0-119-generic

Can you still boot with this and find out what exact touchpad it is?

Some information program that will provide specific make and model info.

BookwormPup64 has Pup-sysinfo program.

Pup-Sysinfo ->Devices ->Input ->Complete

But not sure it will show anything about yours, if driver or firmware is needed.

Anyway, at least knowing what manufacture it is will be some help to figure out what is needed.

What you have already posted indicates the driver and or firmware is needed.

But cannot offer it, if no info on exactly what touchpad it is.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

In BookwormPup64 run this in a terminal.

Code: Select all

xinput list-props 11

Post the results.

Here is how to copy from a terminal:

All I get is "unable to find device 11".

I have been experimenting and the present state is:
1. Touch pad does not work in BookwormPup64. Plug in mouse does.
2. Touchpad and keyboard do not work in Fosspup64. Plug in keyboard and mouse do work.
3. Both work in Lubuntu 22.04.4 loaded on hard drive. I got the same "unable to find device 11" when running.

Maybe I have an intermittent hardware issue or a weird chromebook thing..

I was hoping that xinput list-props 11 would be able to give some information.

Well it does tell us what is needed to turn it on is not there or not activating.

I am still looking around for any info that may help you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got one better with my HP Chromebook 14.

It has a elan touchpad and seems to be correct driver is found and loaded.
The synaptic software driver is able to access it and have a full options available for settings.
xinput list-props 11 provides a full output of information about it and settings for it.

But the touchpad does not work.

All over the internet is the same issue, with a lot of different Linux operating systems.
So far, nothing they say will fix their Linux OS, works in Puppy Linux.

Chromebooks are not normal computers and I think their motherboards are setup to only fully support Chrome OS or the computer manufactures version of Chrome OS.

But it could also be the Linux kernel config, when the kernel was compiled.
There are hundreds of options for how the kernel is setup to support different hardware.
This kernel config is a black art to figure out what to allow, not allow, etc..............

I like using a mouse anyway, so I am not too worried about getting the touchpad working.
I most likely would just turn it off anyway.

BookwormPup64 10.0.7 was the first Puppy version, that had sound working from the first boot up.
Nothing needed but set sound volume level.

With all the issues other Puppy versions had, getting sound to work. This is a big deal! :thumbup: :D

You wrote this in a previous post.

It worked in lubuntu 22.04. It also works in EasyOS but I have other issues with EasyOS.

So , could you boot up EasyOS and run

Code: Select all

xinput list-props 11

If you share the output of lsmod and dmesg from two distros, one where touchpad works and one where it doesn't, this can be fixed in minutes.

Installing EasyOS seems above my skill set and a USB stick protruding from a lap top is undesirable.

@mcman56 This is weird, I see the required driver is there but not loaded for some reason. Can you modprobe configs; zcat /proc/config.gz in the Lubuntu installation where the touchpad works?

EDIT: I think I found the difference, CONFIG_CROS_EC_LPC=n in Debian but it's CONFIG_CROS_EC_LPC=m in Ubuntu, and this is the missing driver

EDIT 2: @radky - I fixed this for Vanilla Dpup in https://github.com/vanilla-dpup/woof-CE ... ec65d768b7 and from now and on Vanilla Dpup 10.0.x is going to take the kernel from https://github.com/vanilla-dpup/woof-CE ... kernel.yml instead, feel free to backport this fix to puppylinux-woof-CE/woof-CE if you want (I'm not going to do that)

EDIT 3: Vanilla Dpup 10.0.61 will be (hopefully) released today with this missing driver included. I don't know if and when other Puppy releases receive this fix but from what I see this driver is indeed disabled in the vast majority

Code: Select all

$ fgrep -r CONFIG_CROS_EC_LPC
kernel-kit/configs_x86/DOTconfig-5.15.4-i686-pae:# CONFIG_CROS_EC_LPC is not set
kernel-kit/configs_x86/DOTconfig-6.1.52-x86:# CONFIG_CROS_EC_LPC is not set
kernel-kit/configs_x86/DOTconfig-6.6.2-x86:# CONFIG_CROS_EC_LPC is not set
kernel-kit/configs_x86_64/DOTconfig-5.15.4-x86_64:# CONFIG_CROS_EC_LPC is not set
kernel-kit/configs_x86_64/DOTconfig-6.1.13-x86_64:CONFIG_CROS_EC_LPC=m
kernel-kit/configs_x86_64/DOTconfig-6.6.2-x86_64:CONFIG_CROS_EC_LPC=m

@mcman56 Thanks, 10.0.61 (or later) from https://github.com/vanilla-dpup/releases/releases should fix the issue

The stock F96-CE_4 kernel 6.0.12 has this configured as a module. Wonder if it works in F96-CE_4?

Code: Select all

CONFIG_CHROMEOS_LAPTOP=m
CONFIG_CHROMEOS_PSTORE=m
CONFIG_CHROMEOS_TBMC=m
CONFIG_CROS_EC=m
CONFIG_CROS_EC_I2C=m
CONFIG_CROS_EC_ISHTP=m
CONFIG_CROS_EC_SPI=m
CONFIG_CROS_EC_LPC=m
CONFIG_CROS_EC_PROTO=y
