I installed Puppy on Chromebook 3 with Lubuntu, how to boot SOLVED

Post by mcman56 »

I was running Lubuntu on a Chromebook 3 and it already has UEFI installed. I'm now trying to load the latest puppy per viewtopic.php?t=5275

It all seems to work but once rebooting I don't see how to boot to puppy. I think the partitions look OK. If I go into the boot manager, there is an add boot option. Using add option, I can see the EFI. linux and storage areas. Selecting the linux area it seems to show the "short" folder but I'm stuck.

Which Puppy?

Looks like you haven't installed the required Grub boot loader. Go to item 2. Frugal Install To Drive on the above link and complete those operations. That should give you the Grub menu on reboot.

I did get further. If I let the system try and go to the no longer existing Ubuntu OS, It shows an error and then goes into Puppy when I press any key to continue. Still, when in the boot menu, I see no way to add puppy as a boot option.

This is BookwormPup64_10.0.7.img.

It does not have a single Pup Installer option. It has Frugal Pup Installers with FrugalPup and DiskPup options plus stick options. I can go to FrugalPup and then a boot button. I get confused at this screen and sort of guess. What ever I choose, I get a No Puppy Frugals installs in /

Should be BookwormPup64_10.0.7.iso

DId you install the ISO to a USB flash drive?

Your Puppy files should be in a directory in mm0p2. You will install Grub in mm0p1

If you installed your Puppy files in the "short" directory, you will just need to double click "short" in your screen shot above to add it to the path.

For reference, you can take a screenshot by using: Menu>Graphic>Take A Shot

Startup Disk Creator would not recognise the .iso even though I could see the ,iso in the folder. If I rename it to .img it would then burn the usb. I don't know why but have had the problem before.

I followed instructions and think I have confirmation that the boot is in place. However, when rebooting it still does not show a puppy boot option. It defaults to Ubuntu, gets stuck asking to press key to continue and then lands at a puppy boot scree. See pictures.

You have grub files left over from the Lubuntu install causing the problem. Any directories/files on mm0p3 (shouldn't be)?

Otherwise, they are on mm0p1. Then probably easiest to just delete all the directories and files on mm0p1 and reinstall grub.

There is a lot and found folder on Op3 but it is empty. When I delete all from Op1 and reinstall, I'm back in the same situation.

Your 8/29 pup4.jpg screenshot should be the first menu displayed, if it's not. what do you see?

If you installed the Coreboot firmware (displays the rabbit on boot) you may have to enter setup and disable/change boot devices and order.

From reboot, the system stops at a screen saying there is an issue with Ubuntu. Hitting any key gets me to the pup4.jpg screen. I do get the rabbit on boot and when hitting ESC I can go to the boot menu. The odd thing is that is shows Ubuntu which should have been deleted but not puppy? I can try to step through to create a new boot option but get to a screen where it wants me to "input the description". At that point, the keyboard does not work. Could I just delete the Ubuntu option?

Yes, you can use the UEFI Boot Manager to delete it.
