I have no ethernet or wifi - F96-CE_4 <Solved>

Post by Jasonbc »

I can't get puppy online At ALL . This makes no sense , the ethernet port shows up in the network config , but i have nothing - and the the wifi transceiver doesn't show up at all. but yet i can press the wifi button on the laptop and turn on/off the transceiver .. also I do have activity lights on the eth ports ,but conky shows nothing on the down , only up activity. I've searched the forums and I'm not really finding the answers..

Fossa 64 -frugal

what info do i need to provide ???

@Jasonbc
The ethernet device, what is it's name (i.e. eth0)?

Using the pupsys-info or one of the network configuration utilities check the name of WiFi and ethernet device names and post the results.

or in a terminal:

Code: Select all

ifconfig -a

or:

Code: Select all

ip address

On occasion I have seen some systems balk connecting to a network when using certain different device names

so the devices are being seen and identified. That must mean a driver is loaded.

Can you please post the result of:

Code: Select all

# dmesg | grep eth0

Have you tried out any other kernel combinations?

Please understand something.

Fossa 64 is not telling us anything useful about what exact version of Puppy Linux you are using.
Yes it matters.

Is it:
Fossapup64 9.5
F96-CE_4 (Fossapup64 9.6)
Fossa64 mini, or mid, or micro
etc.........

Give the exact name of the Puppy Linux version ISO
That will give us the exact version it is.

You have fossa64 ce in the topic subject.
So, is that saying you are using F96-CE_4?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

since i have no way to login to the forum on that machine , I can only type out the results here, but it says :

Code: Select all

atl1c: eth0 NIC link is up>100 Mbps full duplex

Have you tried out any other kernel combinations?

not quite sure what you mean..

@Jasonbc It looks like the eth0 device is up and running!

Can you check the ethernet CAT5 cable between the computer and the router/switch?

Does the router/switch connection status LED light up?

i've checked that several times , i've see a few "blinks" of status lights a few times , but still no connection.

and i've changed the cable 3 times..

This is where I think we should try other kernel components. First we could try to swap the fdrv SFS from NoblePup64 into Fossapup64.

You will need to copy the fdrv SFS from NoblePup64 BUT you will rename it to match the Fossapup64 components.

Then reboot. This might bring success connecting :thumbup2:

@Jasonbc - re-wifi, would you please run the following tests in a full-screen terminal to see if anything's missing:

lspci -nn | grep etwork (that starts with a lowercase L & has pipe symbol in middle, which is often shift plus \ key)

Am looking in particular for [9x9x:9x9x] format code at end.

Also, please then run:

dmesg | grep irmware

Will list any missing firmware.

Please post all that info & we may be able to sort your wifi.

You can copy and paste the output from a terminal (console) and paste it in a text file to use in another computer or operating system.

Copy- left click hold and highlight

Paste- middle button click

Also works to copy from terminal and paste to other programs.

Also if you use copy method that comes with other programs you can paste in terminal by middle mouse button click.

If you do not have a middle mouse button.

Clicking the left and right buttons, at the same time, will have same effect as middle mouse button.

shift+insert will also work to paste.

Note:
copy stuff is stored in the clipboard.
The last thing copied is what is pasted.
You can click on the clipboard manager icon on the right side of the desktop tray.
It will have a list of all items copied.
You can select one of them from this list.
That will now be what is pasted.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Sorry everyone for not posting in a few days, I have been busy ..

So i literally did none of the above and got ethernet working , i just switched over to that option to use the other network manager options , rebooted and chose Frisbee, it works now , but i STILL do not have wifi...

As for the wifi , i know what module that i need to load , it's the b43 (broadcom), but i'm not seeing how to do that ... so now what ? i need the b43 to load and be persistent... download some stuff and terminal stuff????

@Jasonbc - Good to see ethernet is working. The tests above will give us info needed.

OR

you could just try this driver (at own risk):

https://www.mediafire.com/file/axjuoixz ... p.pet/file

After download, click on .pet in filemanager & wait about 5 sec after install, then try to connect wifi.

@Jasonbc :-

If it's the b43 driver you need, then you're in good hands with Oz. He helped me to get the same item running in my secondary machine, a 2007/8 Dell Latitude I use in the front room in the evenings. He also helped me get the combo wireless/Bluetooth chip working for wireless a few years ago in my main HP desktop rig.......one particular Puppy was being "awkward", for some unknown reason, and just wouldn't connect to Ethernet (which I normally prefer, being Gigabit on this machine).

Keep us informed as to how you get on, please.

Mike. ;)

Simple disclaimer meaning there is no warranty and no guarantees that it will work or not.

@Jasonbc - without the test results, the above .pet is my next best suggestion. It (up to today) has been downloaded 202 times, with just 1 query (yours would be the second). In these litigious days, 'use at own risk' is a generic warning I put on everything I do, as being over 70, I sometimes make mistakes.
If worried, it might be a good idea to boot up a separate live version of your particular puppy & try .pet there.
