SFS basic updater

Post by ozsouth »

This will allow basic updates to an sfs using medium compression (-b 512K -comp xz -Xdict-size 50%). Use at own risk.

First download .pet below & install by clicking on .pet in filemanager. Then:

Place sfs to edit in an empty folder & open terminal.
cd into that empty folder & run updatesfse
make edits in utmp subfolder
when done, click OK
when compression done (could take some time), mynew.sfs appears in folder.

I wonder what goes in your mind when you go on and put something outthere but can't trust it enough so you put "use at your own risk", I think it's better to not use it at all

@Doggy - just a generic disclaimer in these litigous days. I've used variations of this .pet for years, but being over 70, I do make mistakes sometimes.

Then you should not use open source software. Or __any__ software, at all, for that matter.
__ALL__ of the software licenses, open-source, closed source or commercial, have similar "use at your own risk" clauses.

Doggy, would you prefer this disclaimer for open source applications?

"Absolutely guaranteed. :D Try to find me and sue me if there's any problem".

"use at your own risk" states what should be obvious. But the law doesn't work that way. Before the near universal adoption of the Uniform Commercial Code, the law was "Let the Buyer beware". The UCC --and other laws which imitate it-- replaced that with an implied promise by the 'seller' that the article was 'fit for its intended use.' God alone knows how many computer models (each slightly different) there now are --and 'the devil is in the difference'. There are over 6,000 different versions of Puppy. The only Law you can count on is Murphy's: "If something can go wrong, it will.'

Yeah, I get it. I was just being a bit paranoid, I suppose. Thanks for putting things into perspective, jamesbond and mikeslr. And ozsouth, I appreciate your transparency about this .pet.

Often that's the (negative) interpretation of Murphy's Law.
I think it also includes "If something can go right, it will." :D ;)
