I use Whatsapp every week to communicate with my son in Germany using Puppy Linux F96-CE_4 !!

@RSH I am using the Opera-portable browser from @mikewalsh which has Whatsapp built in.
viewtopic.php?t=1448

Download the Opera-portable place it outside of the filesystem (i have it on /mnt/home) then look inside and run the menuadd script which takes care of adding the symlinks and .desktop file.

Whatsapp is started from Opera's sidebar, which will display a QR code to connect to your phone. Works really well.

I think I got a desktop application of a Whatsapp version for Linux to work in the same manner but the requirements keep changing so the Opera or Midori browsers offer Whatsapp built in and are easy to configure and use :thumbup2:

I presume though that in all cases you have to have the WhatsApp app installed on a smartphone and then have a connection between the phone and the Puppy computer?

As a point of principle I have always tried to avoid WhatsApp because it is Zuckerberg, Meta, Big Tech, Silicon Valley Oligarchs and all that. I have never had a Facebook and I am a bit dismayed by the fact that so many people have allowed themselves to feel that they have no alternative but to sign up to these organisations. Although the likes of WhatsApp will argue that they are providing a useful service, much of their motivation is data harvesting for unscrupulous purposes.

For me, one of the nice things about Linux and Puppy is that you are your own administrator and there are alternative methods of doing tasks which are developed by people who are more sincere and trustworthy.

I run the web.whatsapp in Firefox, running on Bionicpup64.

It doesn't work in my slower cpu (I have 4 puppy linux machines, 2 running bionicpup64 and 2 running bionicpup32) and only one is able to run web whatsapp due to speed and cpu speeds). I'm not sure if the 32 bit OS is a limitation too.

Since I'm using Firefox I installed the WhatsApp Messenger for Firefox AddOn.
Created a test message to send to my Girlfriend via Computer.
I can see it on my phone.
Great!

Thanks to all!

There is an application called Franz for that. The free version has a nag screen at startup, but it works.

There is an application called Franz

I've played around with Franz. It was ok but to much bloat since I don't use any other service. And then there is this:

Imagine that your phone is haunted by a mysterious creature named Franz, who has her own will, personality and desires. Through direct communication with Franz, game mechanics and notification system, you can find out who Franz really is and what she truly desires. Moral choices form the narrative foundation of the game. The decisions that you make throughout the story determine whether you become the rightful owner of Franz or turn into her puppet.

Ferdium is the open-source alternative to this. My partner uses it, but it is pretty much like using Chromium anyway so I just make a taskbar icon link to open whatsapp web in my browser - nowadays that remembers the login password and so on even if my phone if off it seems (once you first time scan the QR code not needed again on reboot).
