Why?

EasyOS already has fscrypt folder encryption.

fscrypt and Veracrypt are very different and operate very differently, and some people prefer the Veracrypt approach. Also some people have existing Truecrypt/Veracrypt volumes, often numerous ones, that they wish to work with, and/or move the contents of deprecated Truecrypt ones to Veracrypt ones.

I got Veracrypt working in Kirkstone without much trouble, and it works perfectly, although its Linux version lacks some options the Windows version has (notably, force-dismount when something's using the volume, and hotkeys, plus other stuff). Overall it works great though!

I did this (do this at your own risk, of course, and make backups first, etc. etc.)

1. Download the recent-but-not-latest 1.25.9 version of Veracrypt, the last to support Truecrypt volumes (I need to upgrade some older TC volumes to VC format), from here: https://veracrypt.fr/en/Downloads_1.25.9.html

2. Go into the traditional package manager (not appi/flappi/SFS) and install the "libdevmapper" package.

3. Un-bz2/un-tar the Veracrypt archive, look at contents (it's just a handfull of install exectuable files).

4. Click on the file for the x64/gtk3 non-GUI installer

5. Click on the file for the x64/gtk3 GUI installer. You can easily tell from the filenames which files these are; ignore the others.

6. Start Veracrypt by just typing "veracrypt" in a shell. When the GUI pops up, go to the Preferences panel, "System Integration" tab, and put a checkbox in the item that tells Veracrypt not to use kernel cryptographic services. This makes Veracrypt slightly slower, but it actually WORKS. Without this checked, it gives an error on attempted mounting and won't work. This is a known bug, I found acknowledgement of that, and it's probably fixed in the latest version (which no longer supports Truecrypt volumes) or if not, might be fixed in the near future.

7. That's it. Use it like you've probably used it on Windows already (minus a few options the Linux version doesn't have (yet?))

Hope that helps. Not sure about how to do it on other versions of EasyOS but it's probably very similar.

Veracrypt is essential for me and many others. Enjoy!

P.S. -- Barry, thanks again for making and updating EasyOS, it's been HUGELY helpful to me! If you could just integrate the "xfe" file manager into the next version, or make it be in the package manager, or provide a simple "Install xfe" menu item, I'd be eternally grateful. It was right in the package manager for EasyOS Buster, but isn't in Kirkstone, and I can't get it working on Kirkstone by messing with its installer files. I find it far superior to other file manager options, as do many others. Thanks either way though, you do truly amazing work!

P.S. -- for awhile I was launching veracrypt from the command line, but then I noticed there was indeed a menu item added for it in the start menu. I'm on a different PC without veracrypt right now as I'm posting this, but if I remember right, it was under the "System" category in the menu. If you install it, have a look there for the item to start it.
