DC-ROMA RISC-V LAPTOP II

Post by mimine »

I read about a laptop with a RISC-V processor :

https://deepcomputing.io/product/dc-rom ... laptop-ii/

Octa-core RISC-V CPU
Ubuntu pre-installed
SpacemiT K1 SoC

Does it sound like a good testing machine for puppy linux and something which has a future ?
We hear a lot about ARM but ARM needs a lot of royalties from hardware vendors.
RISC-V is royalties free, open source. Many hardware companies are turning to it instead of ARM.

It seems interesting but the cost is still comparable to equipment under Intel, AMD or ARM.

And for the rowalties, it's paid out of the pockets of the consumer who generally doesn't care if it works under ARM, Intel or others

That laptop costs at least 400 DOLLARS in the USA

Royalties for ARM are not good for hardware vendors, and also ARM is not open source and has many patents and some companies (QUALCOMM) were sued by ARM. VERY BAD.

400 US dollars with 32Gb of storage and 8Gb RAM
600 US dollars with 1T SSD and 16Gb RAM

Just remember the first Intel laptops prices ! This one is among the first risc-v laptops.
Don't expect prices to be cheap for such a rare laptop.

OK, it was an idea for those wanting to test ubuntu and puppy linux under risc-v, which is quite rare.
I will try to find other computers with a risc-v processor :).
