@alibadrelsayed Same problem as any other distro, you'll need some workaround (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NTFS) until ntfs3 becomes a first class citizen.

thanks a lot dimkr for your time, I have vanilladpup-10.0.56 installed in another flash and it works fine with NTFS, I also have EasyOS 6.1, Ubuntu 24.04 and Mint 21.3, all of them work fine with my NTFS partitions in both HHD and SSD, it's first time to happen, so if you can kindly find a way to solve that in the coming build of vanilladpup-11.0.x will be a great job, thanks again.

I try this in terminal:
# mount -t ntfs3 /dev/sda3 /mnt
it finally mounted, still if you work around that in the coming release it is appreciated.

One thing I have noticed. Sometimes waybar doesn't recognize I'm clicking on it and I get the menu instead.

Would you be interested in making a portable yad app to mount img files? The reason I'm asking is I use 11 full time and only use 10 to install a upgrade of 11. Using losetup and mount is not hard once you know what the commands are but for someone new wanting to do a furgal install it can be challenging. I know it was for me. A portable yad app to mount the img would make it easy for anyone to use. Just a thought.
Thanks

Is there a way to start cups from a menu or shortcut? Thinking of newbies here.

It should be already running, it's started by the init script (/etc/init.d/cups).

Maybe, I'll give it a try.

11.0.158 should speed up web browsing by reimplementing the classic pup-advert-blocker. I wrote a NSS module that hashes a domain and performs binary search in a sorted array of hashes that's created beforehand and gets mapped to memory. This is waaaaay faster than the traditional solution of lookup inside a /etc/hosts that has >150k lines. In addition, it's nice to be able to modify /etc/hosts without worrying about breaking ad blocking, and the 4.4 MB /etc/hosts is replaced with a much smaller 1.2 MB binary file.

Everything is in https://github.com/vanilla-dpup/woof-CE ... rt_blocker if you want to use this in another distro.

EDIT: forgot to mention, I also simplified firewall_ng a lot. The list of firewall rules is now much shorter (it's a short "what not to drop" list, rather than a long "what to drop" list), and it no longer does router-specific things that make no sense on a desktop computer while making the firewall slower to start. I have no idea if this simplification also affects overall network performance or reduces CPU consumption, but maybe it does.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I was asking about the cup web interface localhost:631
I did a .desktop file to start it for printer setup and config. All it would need in a menu entry

This sounds like a really good idea. Smaller and faster are always better

This too makes a lot of sense.
A shorter rules list and a faster ad-blocker should make browsing faster.

11.0.159 will:
1. Update to labwc 0.7.3
2. Hide window contents and display only the outline while resizing; this should be good for old computers that struggle to redraw window contents on each mouse movement event
3. Disable more Firefox anti-features including some that will be introduced in 128 ESR
4. Add more sysfs security hardening
5. Add more documentation

New install of dpup 11.0.159
Only been using it for an hour but so far all it good.
This is just the feel of it but browsing does seem faster.
The host file looks funny with only 4 entries
Question is the new ad-blocker on by default?
I checked out the rules in iptables it is a very short list
Question I see the policy for forwarding and Output is accept. Can you explain please?

The new ad blocker is on, but it doesn't use /etc/hosts. It has its own file.

iptables rules in FORWARD make no sense unless your computer is configured to act as a router, so it's OK not to block any forwarded packets (there aren't any). Allowing all sent packets also makes sense - the firewall only blocks incoming connections. Blocking outgoing connections might make sense in a server, but not in a personal computer.

When I install 11.0.159 I didn't use my old save file. I created and used a new one. However it didn't save anything until I rebooted. Is this the default or is there a way to get the save to work without a reboot?

Edit Just wanted to let you know the delays on this forum have disappeared since upgrading to 11.0.159

@d-pupp If you create a save in your first session, nothing is saved. Saving happens only if the save was found on boot. To start using a new save, reboot.

11.0.161 ports the firewall from iptables to nftables. nftables can handle both IPv4 and IPv6 in one ruleset so everything is shorter and clearer (maybe faster, I don't know), while iptables is deprecated and also bigger on disk, making the decision to switch to nftables easy.

I just installed 11.0.161 and am figuring out nft. If I got it correct it starts the same way as iptables did. /etc/init.d/rc.firewall. There is one table inet filter and one chain firewall_ng policy drop.
Then there are rules for icmp, dhcp, lo, established, and Neighbour Discovery for ip6 (whatever that does). Nice and simple. I guess if I think about it that is all you need. If you install something with malware in it outbound rules won't help much. It's still going to phone home.
Nice.

Yep, previously the firewall had OUTPUT rules that only accept packets, basically anything. If it doesn't block any outgoing packets, having these rules is just a waste of CPU cycles. You can't detect 'phone home' packets in a firewall anyway, unless you have threat intelligence and something that blocks known malicious addresses (a constantly changing, inaccurate list).

Use losetup with -P, it's a partitioned image.

@dimkr I have noticed rsync is not installed on dpup 11 builds. I occasionally do a mirror of my data files to a usb as a backup. Are there any plans to add rsync or something like it at some point?

@d-pupp Right now - no. The plan is to keep it small and tidy, without extra packages that 1. don't add graphical applications 2. won't be used by most desktop users or during partitioning/recovery/installation 3. have dependencies that are not present 4. don't improve user experience (like optional but common fonts) or efficiency (like optional GPU acceleration drivers).

11.0.165 will add:
1. A menu entry for the CUPS web interface
2. A yad-based tool that enables or disables daemons/init scripts (under the Setup menu)
3. A yad port of batinfo, so gxmessage can be dropped

Like @d-pupp, I find value in rsync and grsync. But, if not included, it could be installed when a user discovers it missing. I think, though, some may think something is wrong if its not present as it is usually present in so many.

But, I do agree that anything added contributes to size as this applies to all things.

I respect developer's choice.

Such a cute OS system
Add a keyboard layout icon to the panel
When setting the language, Russian configures incorrectly, I had to configure it manually :ugeek: LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8

at first glance everything works properly ! minimalism This is cool :thumbup2: For Debian separate +

maybe just rsyng without grsync could be a good compromise , but yes

Code: Select all

apt install rsync

is not that hard to type

@Sofiya yes it is a great OS. Hopefully debian trixie repository will include my most used software, newsboat, which is the main reason I still have not made it my main OS (so I can also help with reporting issues/bugs) so I am still using version 10.x which is absolutely brilliant too.

Exactly, my mistake, I chose ru_RU, not ru_RU.UTF-8 . Sorry I was inattentive ;)
Which translations are missing, I put them manually

@dimkr I want to start by saying I'm watching what is happening over there. Nasty stuff. I hope you and your family are safe and well.

As an unofficial tester of this OS I want to report the following
Xarchiver won't open deb files
yad in the terminal clutters it up with warnings

(yad:2043): dbind-WARNING **: 09:46:11.356: AT-SPI: Error retrieving accessibility bus address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.a11y.Bus was not provided by any .service files

My printer install script stopped working. cups permissions seems to be the problem.
Works fine from the cups web interface after it prompts for a user name and password
Edit Scratch the printer install script stopped working. I t seems the version of the script I was using has a typo.
Good luck over there and keep up the good work

I may have found an easy hack to stop this annoying message

(yad:2043): dbind-WARNING **: 09:46:11.356: AT-SPI: Error retrieving accessibility bus address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.a11y.Bus was not provided by any .service files

A web search turned up hack that seems to work
I added to ~/.bashrc

Code: Select all

export NO_AT_BRIDGE=1

It seems to be working.

Another addition to 11.0.165: a screen recorder. I use screen recorders a lot and this is something I've been missing in Puppy for a very long time. I added wf-recorder and wrote a simple yad-based wrapper that allows choice between recording the whole screen or a region, with a "Stop recording" button that floats at the bottom right corner of the screen. I think it's a very cool feature, something that's really nice to have out-of-the-box because it can help a lot with troubleshooting. wf-recorder is small, so size is not a concern.

11.0.166 will unify the screenshot tool with the screen recording tool into a single tool that shows this overlay at the bottom of the screen:

Image

Image

This unified tool can be started from the menu (under Utility) or using keyboard shortcuts:

  • PrtScn alone make it skip the first question and capture the entire screen

  • Shift+PrtScn or Super+Shift+s make it skip the first question and capture a region

  • In all other cases, it will ask if you want to select a region

  • It always asks if you want an image or video capture, shows a file selection dialog for the output file and opens the output file at the end

I hope this will give a better user experience, one that's more similar to what you get with the screenshot tools of a DE but with a much lower footprint :)

11.0.167 includes a small usability improvement on top of 11.0.166: yad is patched with https://github.com/step-/yad/pull/5 so the screenshot/screen capture overlay can be closed with the Esc key, and you can choose between the two offered options using the keyboard (arrows plus Enter) because this window now has keyboard focus.
