How to install Firefox-83.0 in puppy precise-5.7.1?

Post by TIFTAF »

Hi all.
I am using Puppy Precice 5.7.1 and apart from the browser I am happy with it, meaning I would like to keep working with it.

However I would also like to install Firefox version 83.0. but so far have not succeeded.
From the Firefox Web-page I am aware that I need install a number of dependencies, one of them is X.Org ( 1.7 or higher is recommended ).

For some reasons I run into trouble after installing "gnewpet-6.5.pet" into Bionicpup32 and made a X Org pet, which I than installed in Precise. At reboot time the screen remained black .

Can somebody guide me through the proper process of installing a up to date version of "X Org", please ?
Thank you so much.

Hello.

I think you have to build packages on the OS you would like to use them on. But I am not sure if it is possible on precise 5.7.1, because the libraries included in the OS are rather old.

I suggest that you use a newer Puppy, because it would be easier to run a recent browser on a recent Puppy than to try to do so on an older one.

Do the specifications of your machine not satisfy the requirements of newer Puppies?

Do you know about Precise-Light 5.7.2?

This is Ptecise 5.7.1 updated.
The old topic is here:

Have not done it, but it can probably be frugally installed and use the save from your frugal install of Precise 5.7.1

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

This is not what I expected :o

Firefox is up to 84 as of Tuesday.

Here's 79: https://archive.org/download/Puppy_Linu ... recise.pet

If it doesn't work my practical advice would be a newer Puppy or an older browser.

I know you are looking to run the latest FIrefox, but it would be worth giving

mikewalsh's chrooted Iron 84 a try:

I should try this and see if it works on precise light, or if you try it then let us know if it works :)
