It took only 3 minutes in my place for a delta upgrade. :thumbup2:

Using a Raspberry Pi to write the easy-6.1-amd64.img file to a micro SD card. (This is a follow up of my post from page 8.)

This time I used the PiOS (64-bit) with Debian bookworm and Wayfire Wayland window manager for Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 platforms.
(Boy do I love Wayland!)

Remark:
PiOS (Wayland graphics + Bookworm) uses an old dd (coreutils) version 9.1, Copyright © 2022 Free Software Foundation Inc., but it is still good to use with Barry`s easyDD

I always download full os and the delta , place in mnt/wgk and in releases file at times- Update software has never found it yet and proceeds to download full OS again. Doesn't worry me, at least i get Easy onboard. I can't frugal as yet to learn to config grub/ limine etc.

Ok , not a new glitche to 6.1 ,sorry , a bit late , just to be sure it's not my tweaking the because i get weird funky things...still some french problem, having the completion(with my pet of 4.1,feature not available in 3.8) on just realised xvkbd get it right ,but output it wrong or blank it (dead key) ?!!!
Got it right with Kirkstone , what was the magic ? i dont know..or remember exactly , of what i does , i did the same .

ê_ok
à_ok
Ê_print À
À_print À
é_blank dead
cannot use compose(multi_key) too... never saw that problem with kirkstone !!
Choosing variant layout give just different blank or mismatch printing ,like é printing è..hmmm ...

Solving compose(multi_key) not working would be a helping one.

hi Barry,
do you plan to do versions for AArch64 and also for RISC-V ?
(I dont have those hardwares but they are used on smartphones and will replace x86 soon anyway).
I dont know if my idea is usefull, but it is just an idea anyway.

@ Barry K
Dear Barry, I have noticed that for some reason Bluetooth isn't working on my hardware once again. I have tried to install the package firmware_linux_iwlwifi_6000_4-20200130 from PKGget, to no avail. BluePup says "power on command failed" and Bluetooth says "no standard controller available".

Alright, solved.

Screenshot(19).jpg
Screenshot(19).jpg (109.4 KiB) Viewed 2457 times

What I did is:

- uninstalled the package firmware_linux_iwlwifi_6000_4-20200130 from PKGget
- went here and downloaded the package firmware-iwlwifi_20240610-1_all.deb
- installed firmware-iwlwifi_20240610-1_all.deb, turned off the system saving the session, booted again and BT was working

Hope this is also helpful for others. But anyway, if I remember well, BT was working out of the box on my hardware on previous EasyOS versions. Am I right or am I remembering badly?
Another strange thing is that now the smartphone recognizes the PC no more with its hostname, but as "BlueZ 5.62".
Anyway, thank you.

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series version 6.1 - What must I do to get enough room on the easyos.img to remaster correctly?

Post by LarryDC »

First off: Thanks for the SASL aware libetpan needed for fastmail accounts in claws-mail. I haven´t tested it yet due to the following points:
- I read Barry K.'s suggested review of fastmail.fm and am therefore in the process of switching to StartMail as my normal email account - I already maintain a tuta.com account which works flawlessly for me on mu 1+7 Android phone.
- In updating to 6.1 I erred in adjusting my grub entry and had to revert back and update again. Fortunately I also got a better resolution on my 24" monitor as a bonus.
- This led me to try to remaster easyos to include my modifications, e.g., keepassxc, vfu, vivaldi, horizontal conky one liner at the top of the screen... After producing the new easy.sfs (That was the first time I'd ever seen all 4 processors working and the CPU at 100%!), I could not copy it to the image for lack of space on the 6.1 easyos.img. All I found in searching was a lot about ventoy which doesn't interest me in the slightest - I install my multiple distros on hard drive partitions. However Barry suggested using "truncate" to increase the size of the image, which I did. BUT i stiil got the same out of space error when I tried to copy over my 1,200MB easy.sfs So I must be missing something.
What must I do to get enough room on the easyos.img to remaster correctly?

truncate can be used to increase the size of the .img file; however, the ext4 filesystem has not been increased. It needs to be increased to fill the new available space.

But there is a problem with doing that, as then the working-partition and ext4 won't get increased at first bootup in a usb stick to fill the entire size of the usb-stick.

The way to go, if you want to create a usb flash stick, is to write the original .img file to the flash drive.
Then resize the working-partition to fill the drive. Then resize ext4 working-partition to fill the working-partition.

You can do both of those with Gparted.

Then afterward, make sure ext4 has the "encrypt" feature (for example of flash drive being /dev/sdb):

Code: Select all

tune2fs -O encrypt /dev/sdb2

Integrated microphone / audio driver

Post by Federico »

Does anyone know if there's a way to let the integrated microphone work? It looks like mine is not detected / supported by the driver. If I open the alsa mixer and press the F4 key I get:

Screenshot(22).jpg
Screenshot(22).jpg (32.26 KiB) Viewed 2262 times

my integrated soundcard is detected as:

Screenshot(21).jpg (65.19 KiB) Viewed 2262 times

my hardware:

Screenshot(17).jpg
Screenshot(17).jpg (189.76 KiB) Viewed 2262 times

It would be very nice, because one could also run video conferencing software on Easy. The automatic detection works quite well, since I can also connect my laptop to an external TV and watch video and audio on it. But for some reason the integrated mic doesn't.

Thanks in advance

Pavucontrol is the standard EasyOS app for configuring sound. It is obviously already installed. It is already set in Analog Stereo Duplex mode:

Strangely enough, if I press the key for configuring the sound card within Pavucontrol I get no recording device (as shown on my previous post). But if I run Alsamixer independently from the menu, if I press the F4 key I get this instead:

Screenshot(26).jpg

But it looks like it doesn't matter: the mic does not work and nothing is recorded. I have tested it with arecord (foo.wav contains only perfect silence):

Code: Select all

# arecord -vv -fdat foo.wav
ALSA <-> PulseAudio PCM I/O Plugin
Its setup is:

Basically, on Alsamixer I can select 2 soundcards by pressing the F6 key:

Integrated microphone / audio driver

Post by Federico »

Thank you. I think that the only way would be to install the Intel hda driver (kernel module snd_hda_intel), but there doesn't seem to exist a Linux audio driver for Intel Tiger Lake, since if you search for firmware-intel-sound on packages.debian.org you will see that among all versions (buster, bullseye, bookworm, trixie, sid) none of them supports the Tiger Lake architecture. Anyway, the output of the script follows:

Installed. That didn't unfortunately make any difference. It added the folder /lib/firmware/intel/sof with some stuff inside (firmwares) and the system doesn't seem to care about its existence;

As far as I know, it is even not possible on EasyOS to add drivers as external modules (or even just to blacklist modules), because the file /proc/modules gets overwritten everytime the system boots. I don't know exactly the mechanism which lets EasyOS consider specific firmwares when placed on specific folders (like the bluetooth ones for example).

At this point the questions are:

- Why 4 and not just one?

- Why aren't Alsamixer and Pavucontrol able to detect these devices?

The point of the question is that the Alsa configuration looks to be OK. The problem must be somewhere else. Maybe the X server configuration?

Hello @Caramel ,

I have used my USB sound card and noticed that the microphone doesn't show up at ALSA, but it shows up at Volume Control. Problem, I don't have a microphone to run the test.

It looks like need to compile the kernel with this enabled:

OK, will do.

@ Barry K

Dear Barry, thank you very much. It would be very nice to let also the integrated mic work. I think that this issue existed already on EasyOS Kirkstone, but I didn't notice it (and obviously that this could help many, making EasyOS jet more useful).

While the Intel firmware-sof-signed package was installed it happened also on my system a couple of times that the audio did not load / work at all or that the X server started completely frozen. And when trying to shut down the system I got this infinite loop:

IMG_20240719_113130.jpg
IMG_20240719_113130.jpg (375.1 KiB) Viewed 2086 times

After uninstalling the package, everything seems to be back to normal / correct operation.

DistroWatch ranking

Post by Federico »

Good news. With the release of EasyOS Scarthgap, featuring Linux kernel 6.6, EasyOS has jumped up 8 positions on the DistroWatch ranking and occupies now the 24th place. More over, 3 new positive reviews of it have been posted.

@Caramel ,

modprobe snd_soc_dmic

cool - now Volume Control and ALSA capture R+L are in sync. If I move the slider from Silence to 100% capture follows.
Will have to buy a new microphone tomorrow to complete the test.

I am wondering what I may be doing wrong here.

I downloaded the Easy 6.1 image, mounted and copied easyos folder in an ext4 partition.
Added the stanza shown in the grup4dos menu (Geany has line wrapping as you can see from the line numbers) and I get the error showing.
Indeed there is nothing is the easyos folder than what is shown before or after the boot attempt.
This is in a qemu virtual machine along other puppies

I did not try easyos since 3.2, so apologies if I missed something important already said that explains my problem
Thank you
