The creators of VectorLinux had a single credo: keep it simple, keep it small and let the end user decide what their operating system is going to be. What has evolved from this concept is perhaps the best little Linux operating system available anywhere. For the casual computer user there is a lightening-fast desktop with graphical programs to handle daily activities from web surfing, sending and receiving email, chatting on IRC to running an FTP server. The power user will be pleased because all the tools are there to compile programs, use the system as a server or perhaps the gateway for home or office computer network. Administrators will be equally pleased because of the small size and memory requirements, so the operating system can be deployed on older machines that have long been forgotten.

You have to understand, since Puppy first started it has spawned a whole host of other small lightweight OSs, for which Puppy was - to a greater or lesser degree - the inspiration. These other OSs are NOT Puppy, of course, but they operate under the same sort of principles.......and because of this, they will always have a home here, under the broad Puppy umbrella.

Try 'em out! You may find you actually LIKE some of them.....

The above comment about deforming Puppy is disgraceful nonsense and not of course welcome in this KL development thread. It also shows lack of knowledge of the history of union filesystems. I happened to start my UNIX-related life in 1990 on Sun microsystem workstations and layered filesystems were often used by that time. In fact Sun introduced and employed these concepts that Sofiya (?) is being accused of 'deforming'; Sun had used them several years prior to my own research group early experiences:

Sun Microsystems introduced the first implementation of a stacked, layered file system with copy-on-write, whiteouts (hiding files in lower layers from higher layers), etc. as the Translucent File Service in SunOS 3, circa 1986

I suspect Knoppix was the best known user of such techniques in more recent PC decades, but there were several small distros released using aufs or some earlier version of union filesystem. Puppy Linux was certainly a nice small distro implementation so maybe we should all thus now stop further distros using union filesystems. Ridiculous attitude really.

Remote desktop access

It is now possible to enable remote access to the desktop with one button directly from System Preferences. Once activated, the user can connect to the KDE Plasma desktop from another computer using RDP.

WOW! This, though minor or misunderstood (I feel) by most, is a significant addition to this distro. @Sofiya, this is a fantastic update to your project.

I hope the community understands the significance of this single addition...especially for 2 reasons (there's more, of course):

1. ability to take advantage of this PC desktop from other LAN locations

2. ability to administer this PC from other LAN locations within the home

The functionality, the performance, and the fact that is operates with STABILITY makes this a premire project from you and the KL team, overall.

I don't know why you have to give me some recommendation like this! Will you perhaps inform us, that you think, the real Puppy Linux is back to Barry Kauler with his EasyOS, and the actual stuff discussed here does the same as Chine products under many old German brands: only use the brand to rap the attention of people for somewhat more and more totally different? Hm... If you think it is good! Since 2004 I spend many time on the Puppy Linux forum for the initial idea of Puppy linux: This make that little distribution unique and worth. Not new developement trying to make out the name a publicity pass for the trying to diffuse under that name somewhat completely different. We did already have a KDE for Puppy but a KDE sfs completely compatible with Puppy exactly as each good and real Puppy sfs extension...

The notion that somehow 2004 and today are to be kept in the same regard is questionable, dont you think? Step back, if you will, an consider the differences from 2004 to now. If you see none, I'm sorry.

One of the reasons Barry left was, I think, because he saw different pathway(s) forward and has demonstrated just that. You know, distro build, distro packaging, distro size, etc. He is not stuck in 2004, either,

I am NOT objecting to your perception, but do find that as you express a sense of history you are stuck on a premise that, to me, is a personal one VERSUS the progression of the technologies and the advantages that have moved forward in time.

Here's hoping you might want to reconsider your current position.

BTW: Can this discussion about PUPPY and its past be better placed somewhere else. The work of @Sofiya and other contributors should NOT have to be derailed by a past notion lost in time?

@oui This is not a Puppy Linux and never was intended too be one. It is similar in operation but so is Puppy Linux to it's own forerunners.

Puppy is Puppy, DebianDog is DD, FatDog is it's own level, and Kennel Linux is also a layered system and combines ideas. They all are similar in some ways and different in others

I have to agree with everything that's been said in the last several posts. Remember, too, that even many of us who DO tend to stick with "traditional" Puppy often modify the hell out of it.....so strictly speaking, even these are no longer exactly Puppies as they were originally envisaged.

But.......who's complaining?

This forum is, I feel, unique in one major respect; it's a 'melting-pot' for a whole smorgasbord of ideas, concepts and practical applications.......so many of which you can more or less "mix-and-match" (after probably some modifications, of course). One that you will NOT find anywhere else. Instead of criticising, be thankful there IS so much to experiment & 'play' with!

not All. This build of KDE is minimal, without pre-installed KDE applications. the choice of applications is up to the user .Otherwise, its size would exceed 3 Gigabytes

Having logged in am I really running as "spot" a limited & User; or was this an easy way to enable logging in; or something else?

And if I am running as a limited User, how to I elevate to Administrator?

Yes, after logging in, you work as "spot", but with the "Administrator" account. to change and add files, right-click and select (open as Administrator > password spot)

Just a minor observation between the difference of how screens are rendered comparing Wayland and X11. In Wayland everything appears bigger, panels, firefox page rendering and even the conky display. I've checked in Display Settings and screens is 1920 x 1080 and 100%. So it seems pixels in Wayland and X11 are somehow different.

When changing back to Wayland from X11 the panel is noticeably larger, requiring to reduce the pixel size, by about 6 points to appear a similar size. In firefox I normally set the zoom setting to 120% as 1920 x 1080 on a small 14" screen is too small for my old eyes. My firefox home page which is a start.me page containing all launchers, the launchers are significantly larger, I have changed the zoom back to 100%. The conky display changes position when swapping. I created a second .conkyrc file altering the offsets and some font sizes to compensate, to be able to swap between Wayland and X11. I even in the Wayland version left the hard coded Russian word for Day as a little homage to @Sofiya for her great work! Thank you.
