Where is the scarthgap 6.0 iso download.

All I can find is 5.98
https://distro.ibiblio.org/easyos/amd64 ... scarthgap/

I don't think Barry has released 6.0 yet. https://bkhome.org/news/202406/how-to-u ... ap-60.html "This information is for after EasyOS Scarthga-series 6.0 is released. Don't try it with 5.93 (6.0-RC1)."

Thanks for the reply.
Guess I misread that their was a 6.0 release. (poor eyesight)

Any way I'm back up and running with the 5.98 release so all is well.

Thanks @CF-DKS

I tried with easy-5.98 with saving session when poweroff. No problem . I just noted the message mount: mounting aufs on / failed: resource busy but it's probably normal.

If X starts at the first and second boot but not in he third il's maybe a problem with the save directory /mnt/wkg/.session. Could you make copies of /mnt/wkg/.session/etc after the fist boot and the second boot (to compare) via another OS ? (/mnt/wkg is the wkg_dir on the installation partition)

A thing to test is to save session before poweroff and then after clicking poweroff do not save.

Ok, thank you. I'm going to try this. Will report back.

I have to say even with all of the confusion and headache I created for myself Scarthgap-series 5.98 works well and I found a Firefox icon next to the Applications folder.

I imagine Barry K put it in there.

I sure dislike the newfangled spell checker in Chromium it needs to have a off switch as it goes to a web page with the word you are checking instead of just correcting it the way it should.

Other than that it's alright and works good.

Thanks :thumbup2:

Can you boot the system more than 2 times? If yes, would you post the output of lspci? Thanks.

@ Caramel

So, I saved the contents of /mnt/wkg/.session/etc for the first, second and third (failed) boot. But I cannot post here the archives of the 2nd and 3rd because there is the 537 kb limit (the archives are 1.8 MB big). How may I provide you and / or Barry this data? I used Scarthgap 5.93.

Now I'm going to reformat the stick, re-restore once again Scarthgap 5.93 on it and try to manually save the session and shutting down the system.

@ Cramel

On Scarthgap 5.93 I tried to save the session manually using the icon on the desktop and powering off the system without saving the session every time. That did not make any difference: the system booted only for the first 2 times. Afterwards, black screen.

Black screen Problem too.

If you ignore to enter a root password at the setup you are running into a problem afterwards.

As long as you run EasyOS 5.98 without touching the root password message everything looks good and works well,
regardless how many times you saved and rebooted the system.

But as soon as you enter the root password later EasyOS will boot into a black screen at the next boot.

@ FeodorF

Hi, would you post the output of the lspci command on your system so that we can better understand for which video chips does the issue occur?

Thanks!

The only time I entered a password was at the very end and I guess that's the root password.

And once again, the system only booted twice. At he 3rd boot I got a completely black screen.

A thing to test is to save session before poweroff and then after clicking poweroff do not save.

possibly another way to diagnose.

Do a series of boots and shutdowns without making any saves, even at the first boot. If you can make multiple reboots, this indicates something is being saved that causes the problem. if you can make multiple reboots save a copy of the first boot .sessions....

Do a series of boots and shutdowns only saving on the first shutdown but not on the second, save a copy of .sessions at the second reboot. try a third boot.

Do a series of boots and shutdowns saving on the first and second shutdown. the third boot shoud fail.

Boot with a different stick and copy the .sessions made at second shutdown. you will have three copies of .sessions to compare.

It seems you share a save made before the shutdown of the first boot (It is not complete).
I was not clear. I asked for files between two runs of the OS, Though files before shutdown could be useful too.
Could you only share the /mnt/wkg/.session/etc/X11 that are probably the most important for the X Server ?

EDIT: On my PC the /mnt/wkg/.session/etc/X11 of easy 5.8.3 and easy 5.93 have exactly the same content.

Here you are:

- after first boot there is no X11 subolder inside the .session folder

- after 2nd boot -->

X11_second_boot.tar.gz
(3.2 KiB) Downloaded 16 times

- after 3rd boot (black screen) -->

X11_third_failed_boot.tar.gz
(3.2 KiB) Downloaded 16 times

The X11 subfolder is created in .session/etc after the first shutdown. You probably have copy the files before the shutdown.
Anyway there is no change between the other copys. I don't understand anyhting.

You could follow the advice of @williwaw (viewtopic.php?p=123283#p123283)

@ williwaw @ Barry K @ Caramel @ All

Alright, now testing with EasyOS Scarthgap 6.0. The european FTP server is very fast (thanks Barry). Also the networking issue seems to have disappeared. Very well!
What I found out is the following:

- If I do not save the session I can boot as many times as needed. Tried to boot 6 times and no black screen, but the system is obviously unusable without even the most basic settings.

- If I save the session just once, after making basic settings (Time zone, Keyboard, activate qsync, activate Internet time, turn firewall off, set hostname, set Wi-Fi password) the system still booted many times. I tried to boot 7 times and at the 5th time the network card wasn't detected, but this is fully normal for me, 'cause there has always been a 10 ~ 15% chance for the network card not to be detected on my system.

- After the 7th boot, I downloaded, installed and configured Ungoogled Chromium and the flatpak of AnyDesk from Flathub , from here, just for installing something. Both installations went fine (I could launch and configure the programs). Then I powered off the system, saving the session. At the next boot I had the dreaded black screen (waited several minutes with the CPU fan spinning faat, hoping for the X server to launch).

So, it looks like either the installation of Ungoogled Chromium or of the AnyDesk flatpak or of any flatpak or of any software breaks somehow the usability of the system.

May anyone confirm this? Thank you very much to everyone in advance.

Chromium problem: https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/am ... x/download

Download doesn't work with chromium.

Vivaldi - no problem.

Scarthgap 5.98 / Scarthgap 6.0

Firefox is the only browser that will let you know what's wrong.

Your link is of the type 'https'.
The requested file is provided as a 'http' / 'ftp' download.
Hence the file is not downloaded by Chromium do to a security violation.

You don't have to install Ungoogled Chromium from Flapi or Appi.
It is in the menu "Internet -> Down latest Ungoogled Chromium"

Much better to do it from the menu. Can also update to latest.

You will have to uninstall the appi installed UC first.

Note, I'm planning to compile Shotcut and add it to PKGget repo as a PET package.

I did try that in Kirkstone. There was a problem, can't recall what it was.
But with all the updated packages in Scarthgap, it might turn out better.

So, it looks like either the installation of Ungoogled Chromium or of the AnyDesk flatpak or of any flatpak or of any software breaks somehow the usability of the system.

I thought that you previously tested a pristine new flash drive, didn't install anything, just saved at shutdown, and on the third boot it failed?
In that case, it has nothing to do with installing UC or anydesk.

Anyway, I have just now installed those two and will test multiple rebooting.

Chromium problem: https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/am ... x/download

Download doesn't work with chromium.

Vivaldi - no problem.

As others have reported, there is no problem downloading with Chromium. I just now did it.

You have to right-click on one of the download links, choose "Save link as..."

There will be a popup at top-right corner, a security warning, you have to give the ok to download it.

Chromium considers .deb files to be a security threat.

EasyOS Scarthgap-series - Black screen problem

Post by Caramel »

Maybe a clue.

In Easy 5.98,with quicksetup I changed the locale from fr_FR to de_DE. After application, the screen became black and X is broken after reboot.

So @Federico could you test with the locale en instead of de

No, that doesn't indicate any of those are the cause of the failure.
Well, I'm not sure. I think from your post that you only saved once, so that means you had one more save to go, before failure on the 3rd boot?

In that case, maybe one of those is to blame.

What you could do is install them on the first boot, save when shutdown, then see if it boots ok.
If it does, that eliminates them as the cause. At least, I think it does.

Dear Barry, you are absolutely right:

I re-restored the plane image of EasyOS Scarthgap 6.0 onto the stick (by the way, I'm using USB Image Tool v 1.9) and, as requested, I did all the basic settings and installed Ungoogled Chromium and the flatpak of AnyDesk during the first boot. Then I powered off the system, saving the session, and the system rebooted normally, with all of the software installed and ready to use. So, I tried to restart the system without saving the session to check if everything continued working and I found out that I could boot the system as many times as desired, without saving the session. At the 7th time booting, I installed QEmu 8.2.1 (by the way: is it still a custom version compiled by you?) through PKGget and powered off the system, saving the session this time. The black screen issue reappeared at the next boot. Hence, it looks like the issue appears every time the session gets saved for the second time. Just for completeness I add that I'm always selecting German as language and keyboard layout (may the issue be language related?).

This is what I'm experiencing.

Going to repeat the test setting the language to english. But, for the keyboard I can't, since my physical keyboard is german. Will report back in short.

@ williwaw @ Barry K @ Caramel @ All

So, it looks like either the installation of Ungoogled Chromium or of the AnyDesk flatpak or of any flatpak or of any software breaks somehow the usability of the system.

May anyone confirm this? Thank you very much to everyone in advance.

@BarryK
Im just showing him that installation of most Appi or Flapi softwares do not have system usability problems. ;)

Alright, the problem goes away if I set the system locale to english at first boot. I've saved the session 5 times now, without issues.

So, at least when the german locale is selected it looks like on EasyOS Scarthgap and Quantum Vis it's not possible to save the session more than once. I do not know at the moment if this also occurs when using other non-english locales. I also do not know at this point if it's safe for me / us to do the update, since I've been using Easy Kirkstone in german for several years.

I'm glad that we have found the culprit. I'm also wondering if I'm the only german of the planet using EasyOS.

This should be fixed, since everybody should know when it's possible to select the own language for the system, isn't it?
