How do I install Java?

Post by Saladin »

I think I've installed 30 packages with "java" or "jre" or "jvm" in the name, and I still can't run Java. What's the package that makes it work?

:welcome: To Puppy Linux!

What exact Puppy version you using???

Give the complete name of the Puppy version ISO you used.

You installed tells us nothing useful.

How did you do the installs???
Details!

Why do you need Java?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

It's Xenialpup 64 bit. I've been installing packages from the package manager.

Old games. I have a portable package that allows me to play flash games. If there were something like that for Java games, that would be ideal for me.

Is this what you have?

xenialpup64-7.5-uefi

Yes all the complete name matters.

I have no way of knowing, if you are using maybe an older version of Xenialpup64, unless you provide all of it's name!

Have you done the Xenialpup64 update as it tells you in the Topic on xenialpup?
viewtopic.php?t=177

Note:
Xenialpup updates and bug fixes

Xenialpup has a few bug fixes and updates that did not get into the final releases.

After installing it and booting to a working desktop.

Get internet connection working, by WIFI or Ethernet.

Do a shutdown and make a save to store changes in.

On next boot up, using the save, there will be a Quickpet icon on the desktop.

Run Quickpet ->Info ->xenialpup updates

This will download and install the updates.

Reboot and update the save, so these new change are now being used.

Do this until it reports nothing new found.

I am assuming you are running Xenialpup64 using a save file or folder.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not totally sure what you did get installed by using Puppy Package Manager(PPM).

But it is probably way more than is needed and most likely the wrong things.

Read this about installing software in Puppy Linux:
viewtopic.php?t=1819

I would start up PPM and click on uninstall button.
Uninstall what you installed for Java.
Do a reboot so for sure the save is updated with the change.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Try getting Java by using what is offered in this topic:
viewtopic.php?t=2514

SFS packages you download to /mnt/home location
Load them into the operating file system by using the program SFS-load-on-the-fly

Using sfs-load-on-the-fly program.
After loading an sfs package.
With some sfs packages.
You may need to run in a terminal

Code: Select all

ldconfig

If you do a reboot after loading the sfs package.
ldconfig should be executed automatically.

I don't use a save file or folder. I've been using Puppy since 2009, and mostly get by on portable packages. If there's something I use a lot, I'll either make an SFS for it, or I'll remaster Puppy so it's installed by default. I don't like persistent storage for the most part, and prefer the regular factory reset.

I actually had a Java package at one point. I think it was a .deb file. I wasn't able to find it this time, and I'm not sure if it would still work if I could find it.

Anyway, whatever Javas I installed are already gone, because I turned off my computer. I'll try the ones from that google drive and report back if it works. I'm just at work at the moment, so won't be able to try it for a few hours.
