How to connect to Brother printer via Wifi?

Post by rimmer »

I recently installed EasyOS 5.8.3 on a 64-bit Bmax B1 Pro & works fine except that I haven't been able to WIFI link to my Brother MFC-L2750DW. It works OK when connected by USB cable, but my printer is at the other end of the house & normally works on WIFI connected to other PC's running Linux Mint & Win. Did I miss something?

I have no experience with a wifi connected printer.

My Brother HL-2040 laser printer is ancient, usb only.
The thing is, it just keeps going, so there is no motivation to update to a "modern" printer.

Anyone got any ideas how to setup a wifi printer?

Barry, you haven't missed a thing. I bought a H-P laser printer about a year ago. Much to my surprise, even though I connected it to my computer via USB cable, it wouldn't work unless it was connected to the Internet via wifi first. Which meant I had to download an app to my smart phone and give it my wifi password. Nothing about this was said on the box or by the salesman.

But, to the OP's question: I can't be of any help there, since I connect my printer to my computer via USB cable. Possibly there's an app he can download to his phone that will help?

Anyone got any ideas how to setup a wifi printer?

Some printers that have WiFi and USB cable connection options require first to connect by USB cable and in the printer admin set up the WiFi with the router's administration console using the name and the password/passkey and once that is set ,disconnect the USB connection and WiFi will now work.

Now though it seems different. Just bought an inexpensive Canon that is AirPrint capable and it required a mobile phone app and the mobile phone to be connected to the same router as the printer will be. Tapped on a QR code presented by the printer app and the printer is connected by WiFi. I could have entered the required data more manually but in the app.

The difference between this newer Canon and my older Canon is that the older one was configured for WiFi connection directly on the printer's admin console when connected by the USB cable and the newer one required an app first.

There must be a similar method hidden in the newer printers to configure via a USB cable connection using the computer that will print using that printer. But that I did not dig around looking for and just used my wife's iPhone to establish the printer's connection to the router.

Thank you for the input. I had thought I was going mad. My printer is fairly old so I wasn't expecting any miracles.
Thank you all again.

Greg.

@rimmer - I wonder if it's a driver issue. Most Brother Laserjets are HP Laserjet 4 compatible. You could try selecting that driver. In the CUPS setup (in web browser, run 127.0.0.1:631), I use AppSocket option. Also, I found under Linux I needed to set a fixed IP address. If you know the IP address, you could try pinging it to see if it responds - in a terminal, run: ping (whatever the IP address is). You can usually get (or set) that IP through the front panel. (All this works for my Brother HLL2395DW).

@rimmer - I also run my older HL-2170W laser printer with the (included in pretty much all pups) HP LaserJet Series PCL 4/5 driver. A line is also required in the /etc/hosts file with the printer IP address and the printer ID (get it from the CUPS printer install). My line is 192.168.10.31 BRN008077ECF5D2 as an example.

My pups: LxPupSc64 and Voidpup64 with LXDE ydrv and synaptics touchpad drivers, both using small savefiles for customizations. Ydrv based NoblePup64 and Fossapup64-small (both LXDE/PCManFM with no savefiles). No fdrvs throughout. :thumbup2:

I've now avoided the problem by buying a cheap HP inkjet just for the EasyOS PC, so that's the end of that as least for now.
Thanks to all for your input.
Regards.
