How to achieve variable font sizes in forum posts...easy 'fix'!

Post by mikewalsh »

Morning, gang.

Now then; I'm quite well aware that very few members will be bothered with this. I'm probably one of the very few that even concerns themselves with post "appearance". However, I made an interesting discovery earlier today....

If I want to emphasise a particular word, or phrase, I'll usually use the 'bold' and/or 'italic' options in the post editor. If I then decide I want to emphasise something more strongly, I'll use the font-size dropdown box, and select 'Large'. To my way of thinking, however, 'Large' - denoted by the value *size=150* - is really a bit TOO large for my liking. I assume that '150' is in fact a percentage figure, and refers to 150% of 'Normal', i.e., half as big again.

I decided to experiment. I tried modifying the 'size' figure to '130'.....and then hit the 'Preview' button.

Lo & behold, it works. Works nicely, in fact. So, by way of a demonstration, here's some of those modifications.....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All of the below are already modified with 'Bold' and 'Italic':-
  • Size: 'Normal' (100) - Puppy Linux
  • Size: 110 - Puppy Linux
  • Size: 120 - Puppy Linux
  • Size: 130 - Puppy Linux
  • Size: 140 - Puppy Linux
  • Size: 'Large' (150)- Puppy Linux
However, the same doesn't appear to work in reverse, i.e., making fonts smaller. 'Small' (and below) all seem to come out the same size.......though perhaps that has something to do with my 'minimum' font sizes in the browser settings. Obviously needs experimenting with.......but it certainly works for larger sizes, as demonstrated above.
Just some useless info for y'all! :lol:
Mike. :D
.....etc, etc.
Browsers have settings that can affect this.
Example:
Firefox ->Settings ->General ->Language & Appearance ->Fonts ->Advanced
These advanced settings can override what the forum is set at.
Minimum font size seems to have biggest affect.
Minimum font size set to 18
In the example font sizes, the only one that looks different is the last one (150) setting.
All the other 4 look the same size.
The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
This is not what I expected :o
@bigpup :-
Yah;I guessed as much. Currently in Opera, I have my 'global', normal font size set to 18. 'Minimum' font size is set to 10.
Quite possibly, if I dial that minimum down to, say, 6 - if it even goes that low! - I would then notice some differences with small fonts.......but of course, unless anybody else had their 'Minimum' set equally as low, they wouldn't actually SEE the difference. AFAIK, 'minimum' also over-rides the 'standard' setting, to a degree. Unlike Firefox, where you can set the font-size to over-ride a web-site's choice (or not, depending on the user's preference), with the Chromium-based browsers what you set it at is what you will see everywhere. Always.....without fail.
I'm not that fussed, TBH. Larger fonts (that's at 120) are what I'm more interested in.....just not AS large as the drop-down box gives you! :)
Boring :lol:
Even 200 may not be enough.
And don't let the BB site tell you that 200 is the maximum allowed font size. It's a lie ;)
to big
Well tell everyone how you are getting by this 200 size limit.
By using the size parameters twice.
