As you use python 2.x

python -m SimpleHTTPServer

is the right command.... Please try it, and let me suggest to update to python 3.x from PPM

Don't give up just yet, if not for yourself, then for others who might have the same need.

Agreed, for the short term. This is stretching my patience, as I’m sure it is for every one.

Question: Did you see the XP instructions I linked for XP to see his BKWP64?

I think you are confused, since at no point have we been dealing with BKWP64. OP only uses Bionioc32. I did look for your link and only found one that I could not access, please post again.

Let's do a recap of some of what's been communicated:

The OP has beginner level skills.

OP wrote:
"transfer files from Laptop A (Puppy only, on HDD) to Laptop B (Win XP only, on HDD)".

@rcrsn51 wrote:
"In what direction - Puppy to XP or XP to Puppy?"

OP wrote:
"BionicPup32 laptop to Win XP laptop."

From this we know the OP has a Bionic32 laptop (the daily driver) and a XP laptop, and wants to transfer files from Puppy (will be the client) to the XP computer (will be the server).

Three categories of solutions have been proposed:
1. File sharing
2. File transfer
3. Web Server (does not meet the Puppy as client criteria)

The OP has elected to try #1, file sharing.

The file sharing solution is almost implemented, although in the wrong direction, but should be completed without much effort.

Thanks

Good feedback.

Used enp4s8 inet addr:192.168.1.1

This is the correct one. Here's what we need to do to troubleshoot:
-send me a copy of your smb.conf file (/etc/samba/smb.conf)

This will test the connection to Puppy
XP computer:
-click the start button
-choose: Run
-type: cmd
-press: enter
A terminal window will open
-type: ping 192.168.1.1
-press: Enter
You should see this kind of Reply lines, but with 192.168.1.1

Your XP does not see Puppy. If you have a firewall and/or anti-virus program running on either computer, turn them off and try to ping again.

Ok, it's a process of elimination, so one more down.

Now we need to check the XP computer IP adddress.

XP computer:
-click the start button
-choose: Run
-type: cmd
-press: enter
A terminal window will open
-type: ipconfig
-press: Enter
The output will look something like this:

Ok, the problem is your XP computer does not have an IP address.

So now we're down to:
-bad Ethernet cable (try changing the cable & rebooting & ipconfig test)
-bad Ethernet port on the computer or router (try changing the port on the router & rebooting & ipconfig test)
-XP network settings are mis-configured

Did you at any point change any network settings or try to set up a static IP address on the XP computer?

No change to Fire Wall or Antivirus on either laptop.

XP network settings are mis-configured

If they are, unfortunately I wouldn’t know.

Did you at any point change any network settings or try to set up a static IP address on the XP computer?

When the laptop was given to me I was told it will not connect to the internet. This was done due the vulnerability of Win XP, as support was no longer going to be given by Microsoft. So whatever was done certainly did the trick. How to reverse that, please don’t ask me.

Just a thought

Keep in mind that I have this working here. Friendly-Bionic32 on computer A and Windows XP on computer B.

If I booted from the USB Stick which has Friendly-Bionic 32 on it, is it possible things would be different? Or is the problem solely with Win XP?

What a way to spend a Sunday. Day of rest (not)

Yes. There is Warpinator which is a tool found in Linux Mint, and it works really well for me on my Linux Mint computers and my Android devices.

https://warpinator.com/
https://github.com/linuxmint/warpinator
https://flathub.org/apps/org.x.Warpinator

However, I have no idea how I would get it to work on various Puppy Linux flavors. I am currently trying to figure out how to get it installed on JammyPup32. But if it can be made to work on Puppy then it is a very stable option!

OK, so we have eliminated:
-bad Ethernet cable
-bad Ethernet port on the router

We are down to:
-bad Ethernet port on computer
-XP network settings are mis-configured or not working

Now we need to check the Ethernet function/port on the XP laptop. There are a couple of ways to do it.

If I booted from the USB Stick which has Friendly-Bionic 32 on it, is it possible things would be different?

That is one way, if the XP laptops CPU and ram are sufficient and it can boot from USB, then try booting. If it does boot, set up the internet connection, then run: ifconfig in the terminal to see if it gets an IP address.

Time to sleep here, will do battle again tomorrow.

I thought a little respite would be in order before continuing.

I booted the USB stick with BionicPup32 on it (thought it better to be constant with the puppy version) on the Win XP laptop.

Ran ifconfig and got this:

ifconfig.jpg
ifconfig.jpg (66.87 KiB) Viewed 230 times

So that is the address PuppyBionic32 is using on Win XP laptop.

What I did find out was that I could access Win XP.

I did a couple of transfer tests FROM BionicPup32 TO Win XP. All OK.

Then I shut down BionicPup32. Removed the USB stick. Left the Ethernet cable attached.

Booted Win XP.

Had a dig around and found the Network Setup Wizard.

Win XP Network Setup Wizard.jpg
Win XP Network Setup Wizard.jpg (46.11 KiB) Viewed 230 times

So I guess this is why there is no Win XP address.

If you remember I said that when it was given to me that no internet access was available.

I am posting this from the booted USB stick BionicPup32 on the Win XP laptop.

So this may confirm my thoughts that BiononicPup32, no matter from where booted, remains completely self contained, meaning that Win XP can not be contaminated. He says hopefully.

If I go on to use this method of transferring from BionicPup32 to Win XP can you see any downside(s), apart from having to re-boot back into Win XP when needed?

The benefit would be that your trouble shooting to resolve this would come to an end and you can get your life back again.

@Chelsea80

The setup on your XP computer is abnormal since someone intentionally disabled the Ethernet. This could have been done in one of several ways including disabled in BIOS and variations within XP.

Your Puppy boot test eliminated disabling in BIOS, so we know it was done in XP.

So,

So this may confirm my thoughts that BiononicPup32, no matter from where booted, remains completely self contained, meaning that Win XP can not be contaminated. He says hopefully.

True, you should make a directory on the XP computer for the file transfers and only use it, that way you'll avoid corrupting the XP install.

If I go on to use this method of transferring from BionicPup32 to Win XP can you see any downside(s), apart from having to re-boot back into Win XP when needed?

No downsides for me and eliminates a lot of configuration headaches getting XP file shares working and still be isolated from the internet.

Do you have Puppy setup so your daily driver is the "client" and it can initiate the transfers? If not I'll walk you through that setup.

The benefit would be that your trouble shooting to resolve this would come to an end and you can get your life back again.

That's really not an issue, most of the regulars here come to learn and to help. You do a much better than average job of documenting than most beginners, makes the process a lot easier.

I think one of the most frustrating things for us is when a poster just disappears or fails to post results about what worked or failed.

I don't know what this means.

This is how I've found to do a transfer.

Booted with USB stick (BionicPup32) on Win XP laptop

Everything is now done from BionicPup32.

At the desktop left click on sda1. Get this (Win XP):

Win XP.jpg
Win XP.jpg (50.78 KiB) Viewed 189 times

.
Left click on Transferred From folder to open it.

Left click on File manager (in Tray 1)

Left click on Transfer To folder to open it. This where I put anything I want to be transferred to Win XP.

Left click and hold whatever I want to transfer to Win XP and drag it to the Transferred From folder on Win XP.

When asked what to do I choose Copy.

Close all windows back to the desktop.

Left click on Green Arrow on sda1.

Finished.

OK, a trick question yes.

No connection was made to any other computer.

The Win XP laptop (I call it that because it has Win XP OS on it) was cold booted with a an inserted USB stick which has BionicPup32 on it.

Once it had reached the BionicPup32 desktop I did everything while still using BionicPup32.
