2nd keyboard config lost after shutting Fossapup down. (SOLVED)

Post by cobaka »

G'day all and woof!

On my desktop I configured 'alternate (Russian) kbd' on my desktop.
I do this - as you expect - with menu -> setup -> Puppy setup -> keyboard mouse (etc).
At the end I have an Australian kdb and a Russian kbd available. I swap between these two using Left Alt and Left Shift keys.

I did this for a long time - originally on uPupBB32. Now I'm using Fossa. (Love Fossa!)

Now, these settings appear temporary - I have to re-config the second kbd when I reboot.
Can anyone tell me what's going on here?
Thank you

собака

Hardware: Gigabyte desktop, 8GiB RAM. Working well.
Operating System. Puppy Linux FossaPup 96CE. from PupSysInfo: fossapup64 9.6 (x86_64)

"so-baka" (not "co", as in coast or crib).

I have to re-config the second kbd when I reboot.

what keyboard is there and active when it boots?

I assume this is F96-CE_4 version of Puppy?
Not an earlier version of F96-CE.

I assume this is a frugal install in directory SYSTEM?

A strange name for the directory. Usually it is the name of the Puppy version.

I assume you are using a save file? or folder? and it boots with other changes still there and working?

I assume you do make sure the save is updated with the keyboard setup?

What format is the partition the save is on?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Hello @bigpup

Well, it seems I put a false proposal - that my kbd settings were lost.
I just re-booted and fonts have been preserved. So NOW my complaint is false. This is what happened.
And I owe you a very big apology for wasting your time.

For many months (probably years) Puppy switched reliably between English and Russian fonts (or keyboard types) when I tapped alt+shift.
tap -> toggle font; tap -> toggle font ... and so on.
I use the Russian fonts nearly every day (to learn Russian) and the 'switch' capability always worked.
For a long time! Then - a few days ago: tap -> no Russian fonts!

Oh well, no biggie! I can reconfigure in 1 minute, I use the mouse/kbd config window.
Reconfig! Great! I have them! But after re-booting -> No Russian fonts!
Oh well ... I re-configured and bingo! I got them. Great!

But now I lost the setting twice. Better ask Bigpup what's the drum!
Well I answered your "Qs" (below) but NOW THIS IS IRRELEVANT bec. "all systems go".
Big apology for wasting your valuable time. All I can say is that the problem happened but now it's gone.

собака <- Это кириллицей и после перезагрузки.
It says: Cyrillic font available after rebooting.
I'm grateful.
At the moment my internet connection is unreliable. I better post this!!

I understand it will be impossible to say what happened, but in the unlikely event that what I wrote before is "interesting" (it won't be ...) I preserved/send it. Again, sorry for confusion.

(1) You: I assume this is F96-CE_4 version of Puppy?
....me: How do I discover this? Below (with the first posting) I gave distro info from PupSysInfo, but how/where will I look for the info you want? But I got some more info from PupSysInfo (at the bottom).

(2) I assume this is a frugal installation into directory called SYSTEM?
.... Yes. definitely. (I got that from knowing how I installed Fossa, but also from PupSysInfo.)
.... In future I won't install to "SYSTEM". I'll call the directory FOSSA (or uPUP ...) Sorry about that name. I used it, because it has ONLY Puppy OS files.

(3) Where is the save file? Answer: The save file is called "fossapup64save-mobius".
.... This IS in the SYSTEM folder, along with "puppy_fossapup64_9.6.sfs, initrd.gz, vmlinuz (etc).
.... This is /mnt/home/SYSTEM
.... Yes. 'other changes' such as net-configuration, recent files used with Geany etc are all there.

(4) the storage device /mnt/home (i.e. sda3) is formatted as ext3.
.... according to ROX, this drive has 23GiB total. I use 4323MiB. I have 18GiB free.
.... last change time, modify time, access time was 21st of April. (I left my desktop running for a few days.)

(5) You: What keyboard is there and active when it boots?
.... Perhaps I caused some confusion here. I used the word 'second kbd'. There is not PHYSICAL second keyboard - just a switch to toggle between Cyrillic (Russian) fonts and English fonts. After I configure the kbd (using the menu--kbd & mouse setup) I tap "alt+shift" to switch between the two fonts.
