How to back up a save file, convert it to a save folder?

I've been using save folders exclusively for 20 years. I set up a server on an old PC using xenialpup 7.5
Thought I'd try using a save file.

Questions being, whats the best way to back it up?
Can you just copy it like any other file?

Also.... can you convert back to a save folder if need be?

Yup; you can copy it - to back it up - just as you can with any other file in Puppy. I ran with save-files for at least the first 4 years I was with Puppy, and in fact the ONLY form of back-ups I've ever employed for the whole of the last decade is a simple copy/paste. Which has always worked flawlessly.

To convert back, just create a new blank directory, name it appropriately - no need for the 2fs/3fs/4fs extension, obviously! - then mount the save-file and just copy the contents over. I've never had any issues with doing this.

Agreed. The only thing I'd add is, make sure you show the hidden files and folders so you can copy these over as well.

Good catch. Yes, I meant to mention that myself, but forgot.......so long as it's been brought up, that's the main thing.

If you do a manual conversion.
Need to make sure the save folder is the correct name, used by the Puppy version, for a save folder.
Usually the same name as a save file, without the .xfs at the end.

I do a normal copy paste of a save file to make a backup.
I add bak. to the start of the name, so it is not seen as a usable save when Puppy boots.
Just remove the bak. and it is all correct to use.
Plus the bak. in the name, tells me this is a backup copy.
This also works for save folders.

Thanks for the help. I like the savefolder pet. been using the save folder backup since it was created.
I like that it dates the files .

I like xenial 7.5, not sure it's the best choice but seems to have a much smaller footprint than others I tried.
I was just making use of these obsolete computers I have laying around and it seems to run fine for a file server.
I can run
apache
ssh
ftp
x11vnc
anydesk ..... if need be

although, ssh was a day long adventure of configs coffee and cigarettes.
I think I just enjoy the creation of things or the stress of it. Both maybe.
Excert When you try to fix one thing and that other thingquits working.
It's the main reason I chose Puppy so long ago, It just seems to be
a more user friendly linux and the forum support has been great.
